I have been watching this laptop for a while.

I was willing to pay 1200+ for it. Today I decided to buy, when I got to Dell website and ta-dahhhh, $700 off which brings this fairly powerful and "useful" laptop down to < $1000.

The more powerful version is also on sale for $1299.

Hope you guys find this useful :-)

EDIT: Thanks to uniqueapps. DELL ebay is selling this for $978.99 and it comes with a free 8" tablet + folio. Also you will be able to use cash reward.

The more powerful one for 1299 with double ram and double the size of SSD may be better for you if you were prepared to spend 1200 anyway.

  • +1

How is this comparing to the surface pro 3?

    • SP3 has slightly battery battery, it has a stylus and it is lighter.

But this deal is heaps cheaper than SP3 with keyboard by at least $300. And the eBay one comes with the small won8 tablet which is a super bonus.

      • I guess it really comes down to how you wanna use it, for someone that needs a stylus then the SP3 is better, but for normal laptop use I'd say this one is cheaper and does the job.

  • -3

The screen flip hinge mechanism is flimsy.

    • +6

Strongly disagree. When I played with one it felt very solid and less wobble than the Thinkpad X type hinges.

Not interested without a Wacom personally.

      • +3

        Yeh, the hinge is solid.

Just an FYI though, we support a fair few of these, and I've had to get 5 of them fixed already. 2 busted screens (one had a horizontal line), a dead SSD, a dead motherboard and a broken touchscreen. All for the same client.. They aren't buying anymore XPS 12s!

    • +1

Got one of this from their factory outlet 2 months ago and loving it. Personally, I found the flip feature very great feature and so far no issues with the hinge.

Was a big risk as mine is the i7 256 ssd version but refurbished for 899. When it arrived, looks new!

      Overall, loving it.

    • You just can't hold onto the laptop with you hand on the bottom back of the screen like other laptops as it will flip. I have almost drop it multiple times.

  • i like the new xps 13 with 15 hours battery, but dell aus to expensive compare to dell us :(

Just use the 12% coupon at this site http://www.powerbuy.com.au/dell-xps-laptops-and-notebooks-10…

Just bought a xps 13 for a work mate using that code :)

      • I think there is a 15%off code some where. Have a look whirlpool.

        • +1

tried using the 12%off above didnt work
located and attempted the 15%off from whirlpool didnt work
price reverts back to 1499 then the 12% or 15% is removed
          best discount is the default

tested on the system mentioned by the OP

        • +1

Buy it from the Dell E-bay store and use the code CBACK2SCHOOL and save a further $20 from the price.

This is the only mention of a current voucher that I found on Whirlpool.

        • +4

@rusty2k: Can you provide a link to the 15% off code?
Just found it.. 3G79S82F2HGF1Q for 15% off if anyone is interested

        • @rusty2k: that code is for 13" one. This one is already discounted.

3G79S82F2HGF1Q <— SUPERB! Thank you. Dropped the price to $1,784.15 for the top-end XPS13 2015 model.

          @OzDJ_: That's still a lot of money..

I think I will wait for the rare chance they might do a discount at the same time ebay does a 20% discount.

        • @lostn:

After paying $3999 [shudder] for a top-of-the-line Sony Vaio Z2* a couple of years ago, even $1800 feels like a steal now ;-)

*the VPCZ227GGX was last of their fully Japanese-built machines. Insanely fast (2x SSDs in RAID) and actually lighter than this 2015 XPS 13 I've just bought.

        • @OzDJ_: Sony did make good laptop but their support is terrible even for the high end model.

        • and now their laptop division is dead… lol

        • @clse945111: Dead as a very dead thing.

  • +5

I've spent quality time with the i7 8GB 256GB version, it's the best portable windows device I've personally ever used. Period. It's built amazingly, with aluminium and real carbon fiber used throughout. The 'ferris wheel' transform mechanism is awesome, the tablet mode feels like it's a normal tablet (albeit fairly thick). It's pretty fast, although at that price I think the dual-core i7 could've easily been a quad core. And the 8GB of RAM isn't very futureproof, and at $1299 I would keep that thing for a while. The SSD is upgradeable though, which is good.

    • +5

I think 8GB is plenty myself although obviously this is going to depend on usage. I think the idea of futureproofing in IT is a bit of false economy anyhow.

      • +1

Fair enough, I personally find myself using an average of 12.7GB of RAM on my personal rig, the average usage in my family is around 6GB total.

  • Not bad. I noticed that their outlet store last week had a few for around $800.

  • +7

picked the i5 up for about $600 USD and an i7 for $900, 5 months ago in the USA - Dell outlet refurb.
the trackpad is terrible for two reasons, very noisy, clicks every time you push on it, and it is very difficult to right click or left click. The xps 13 was the same.
Other than that the machine is solid. some machines did have some burn in issues and noise from the fan.
The display is very bright, the hinge mechanism is fine.

    • Does it have an active pen / stylus accessory?

      • no nothing like that.

no memory card slot is the biggest pain.

    • You can use single finger tap to left click and double fingers tap to right click, double fingers scroll, three fingers previous or next page. Also pinch zoom from the trackpad. Probably the best trackpad around for Windows laptop.

Some unlucky batches used Cypress touchpad that is really buggy, the good one is Synaptics.

      • my alienware touchpad is so much better and easier to use for basic usage, also quiet.

I don't really use the extended track pad functions, perhaps I should try them out.

  • Bought one of the i7 models at JB a year ago for $1200 (20% off sale + display model) and its simply the most amazing laptop ever - powerful, silent, cold and extremely solid build. Hasn't missed a beat, battery life is awesome and touchscreen is extremely bright and vivid.

  • That $1299 model is definitely the more future-proof choice. You certainly won't get the same specs from hp or Lenovo at this price. Badly tempted to get one for work. Decisions decisions.

  • How does the i7 model of the XPS-12 (at $1299) compare to the i7 model of the Acer Aspire S7-392. I managed snag the latter for $1360 last year from DSE during the 20% off eBay sale.
it's a beautiful laptop, but the touchpad is a pain in the neck, the keyboard drives me even more insane, and the party trick 180° flat hinge isn't really very practical, especially for usage as a tablet. The backlighting on the keyboard also is useless, unless you're in a room that's really dark.
in terms of specs and speed however, the Acer is beautiful. never had a problem with it running tasks, and it boots up in 7-8 seconds.

does the XPS-12 rival the Aspire S7 in terms of form factor etc.?

I read this review on the verge - www.theverge.com/2012/11/20/3655532/acer-aspire-s7-and-dell-…
which was before Haswell, and before Acer offered 8gb ram on the higher end model. it also complained lots about the XPS' touch pad - has that improved since?

    • Don't think the S7 is supposed to be used as a tablet lol…, and backlit keyboards are really useful for people who like their room dark.

    • +1

some batches of XPS 12 were using the Cypress touchpad where all the complaints were from. Not sure if the current batches are still using the Synaptics or Cypress.

Looks like you get a free 8" tablet with if you buy on eBay!!!

    The eBay link: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-XPS-12-2-in-1-Ultrabook-Lapt…

"^^ Now includes 8" Dell Venue 8 Pro Tablet and Folio^^"

    Worth about $200

    Good deal!

  • Good decision. With the discount it is really too good to say no!

  • Who are these aimed at?

    • +1

No one. You shouldn't be throwing these things at anyone, because someone could lose an eye or something.

  • Dell XPS 12 does not come with a digitizer pen..however one version of lenovo yoga think pad and surface pro 3 comes with it..its nice to have pen with a tablet claimed thingi then not to have either..i am waiting for S pro 3 i5 256gb 8GB ram good deal which has better performance..

    • I'm with you on the digitiser pen point (hah), but why do you say the SP3 has better performance? I've heard there are throttling issues with it when reaching higher usage thresholds

  • +1

Just a quick note for those that got the 128G version, before you start to do anything with it, backup the whole SSD image with a cloning tools (like Clonezilla). The default partition does not have enough space for a factory image backup and restore, so you have no other way to restore it back to factory default that boots the machine in around 6.5 seconds.

Or you can waste time calling Dell support to get an OEM USB Windows installer but the installer will never get you a 6.5 sec boot, the best it can get is 11+ seconds.

After that remove all the bloatwares that comes with it, especially anti virus. Most of them are interfering with the "connected standby" and will drain your battery in no time.

    • +1

I don't understand. The factory partition does not restore it to the state it is when you boot it the first time? What does it add that increases the boot time? Was something removed from the retail install that is included in the factory partition?

      • In order for the backup function to work, you need a large enough partition. The 128G model does not have enough space.

Since the laptop does not come with a CD installer, you will need to provide your own USB to backup the factory image.

If you run backup the factory image , it will fail because the os will need a backup partition to work which the laptop does not have.

By asking for a USB media from Dell, the USB basically is designed for most model but not specifically for this model. So if you reinstall the system from dell USB the startup will be slow. Almost double the time of the original setup.

So, the best way is to backup the whole image using third party tools.

        • Is the factory partition that is already on the SSD specific to this model, or a generic Dell one?

To prevent the slowdown do you have to backup the system as is, or are you only backing up the factory restore image?

        • @lostn:

The factory partition is made for this model. Therefore it is fast.

You need to do a full backup of the ssd.

  • Does anyone know which 8" tablet this is shipping with?

    /edit

"8" Dell Venue 8 Pro Tablet and Folio"

  • how noisy is the xps13? i heard that because of its thinness the fans run loudly regularly. the main reason why i bought a latitude ultrabook instead despite it having worse build quality, worse screen and fatter. it is silent!

  • The XPS12 is an absolute beast of a laptop. Love it to bits. Have been using it exclusively since about Oct 2013, got the i7-4500U version from the outlet @ ~$1100.

Best screen hinge I've seen on a flip and great for the occasional tablet mode, whisper quiet, very fast for daily tasks and solidly built. Has an excellent keyboard that's backlit, great battery life and good looking screen. Fantastic for working on - but obviously not a gaming machine.

Really recommend it. Had it about a year or so now, and the build quality compares very well even with previous ThinkPads I had. It has stood up to loads of travel and my rough treatment. Brilliant machine and much sturdier than other tablet-style Windows machines.

I'm thinking Dell are going to EOL this in favour of the XPS 13 and this makes me sad :(

    • Doubt it. They share parts, only difference is the screen.

  • Does anyone know if the 3G79S82F2HGF1Q discount code works for purchases on Dell's eBay AU site? Cheers.

    • +1

It won't. It's not an ebay code.

      • OK. Thanks. :-)

Will you be able to get a free upgrade to Windows 10 if you're on a laptop?

    • +1

Yes, provided you claim the free upgrade within the time limit of 1 year.

      • Since you don't install off a disc or downloaded image, how do you get an upgrade though? Will Dell provide a new Factory partition or set of recovery disks? Or is it a literal upgrade, i.e. no option for a clean install?

        • I can't say for sure.

Most likely like Windows 8.1 upgrade method, you will simply be provided an ISO image download of Windows 10, which you will need to burn to a DVD or extract to a USB drive for installation. As to whether it will require a full/clean install or if you can just do an in-place upgrade, it's going to vary from system to system, but the latter is most likely.

It's then up to you to create backups of your own stuff, because I don't think Dell is going to give you recovery media for Windows 10.

        • @scrimshaw: The thing is, Dell's factory partition / recovery media includes all the model specific software and drivers (including their branded logos) which you won't get from Microsoft's download.

If you download it from MS's iso, you won't have the drivers your laptop needs. And you won't have the Dell logo.

You can't make backups of included software in the factory partition. Those come preinstalled. If Dell doesn't give you a new set of media to install Windows 10, it's basically going to be the same as buying a copy of Windows 10 off the shelf, formatting your laptop, and installing Windows as though it was an unbranded desktop PC (and not getting the included software/bloatware), and then looking for the drivers. It won't look authentic.

        • +1

          @lostn:

I'm aware of that.. by using Microsoft's ISO's you will basically get a vanilla installation of Windows.

If you want the Dell stuff to be included, you're going to have to ask Dell, not Microsoft, for the operating system. To request backup media, go to http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/media and enter your service tag.

or you could create your own WIM images and integrate drivers yourself. You can also add in the Dell logo using a few registry hacks.

          It won't look authentic.

I don't see how this is a concern, unless you plan to resell these machines.

        • @scrimshaw:

I don't see how this is a concern, unless you plan to resell these machines.

I'm OCD about having official software.

I'm aware of that.. by using Microsoft's ISO's you will basically get a vanilla installation of Windows.

I wonder how they will authenticate your copy? You never enter product keys for laptops. What will be the product key for the Windows 10 you download? Can you install that on a different PC?

        • @lostn:
I think there's a sticker with the authentication key on the laptop, most laptops have that at the bottom (but I think with Windows 8, mostly on the box, and I haven't bought from Dell before so I'm not sure if they are any different)

I think with Windows10, they might go with the same approach as Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 free upgrade. Putting in the old key to get a new key, and you can't install it on a different PC because your old key would be an OEM one.

        • +1

          @clse945111:

Windows 8.1 license key is embedded into the motherboard of the laptop, with Activation v3.0

One of the improvements Microsoft is making to Activation 3.0 for newly built machines that come preloaded with Windows 8, you won’t have a COA (Certificate of Authenticity) sticker attached to the machine anymore. Instead, this will be embedded in the BIOS. This will avoid product keys from being compromised and OEMs will buy what they need.

I wonder how they will authenticate your copy?

The authentication is done online, invisibly, without the user having to put in a key.

Windows 8.1 is pre-activated on your laptop using System-Locked Pre-installation, also called "SLP OEM activation". This is why you never have to enter a product key, and also why a product key sticker is not included.

When you download Windows 10, the Windows installation media will look into the activation state that your current copy of Windows is in. And you may need to enter the new Windows 10 license key that you 'bought'.

If it's activated, then its simply a process of upgrading the current Windows 8 license to Windows 10. The new license is then applied to the machine's motherboard.

        • @scrimshaw: From the way that is worded, does that mean it can only do an upgrade, and no clean install?

If so, I might wait for Windows 10 to release naturally, and get a laptop that comes with Windows 10 preinstalled. I'm in no real hurry I suppose.

        • @lostn:

You can always do a clean install, it is an optional choice to do an in place uograde.

        • @scrimshaw: I meant for the laptop, if you want to keep the preinstalled software. Can't see any other way you can do it. A clean install has to be a generic non-OEM install. For a lot of people that's a good thing, except me. The drivers might not even exist yet.

  • Have one at work, i love it size and weight its a pure joy, screen is a bit too hires/small for win7. But should be ok for win8/10. I cant really fault it one of the best laptops i have used. I wish it had a docking port because the targus usb docking stations we use are problematic.

    • I don't see a New 13.. where is it?

Also, the idea of calling a model "New" is stupid and will come back to bite them. They can't use the tag for more than one year.

        • I checked half an hour after your time of writing and didn't see it. How much was it?

        • @Cheap Charlie: I think you're confusing the word "new" with New. I really hate it when hardware manufacturers call a generation of their product "New" (Nintendo and Apple have done this, and now Dell).

Your one is a "brand new" old model. The New 13s use 5th gen processors.

Perhaps that was what you meant all along and I misunderstood you. It certainly is easy to be confused by the nomenclature.

  • Thank you! Finally replacing my ancient eee!

  • Good deal
i had a look at this laptop before, but decided against it due to lack of dedicated gpu. I'm not sure this has active pen pressure support either. If you're an artist/3d renderer you might look at the new think pad yoga 15" model due to release in the next few weeks

  • -1

can anyone confirm the quality of the trackpads shipped as part of this deal? I've emailed dell's eBay store for conformation on the trackpad batch in these units - I hope this is the good stuff.

  • Just a question to current owners.

I've had some issues with tablets and trying to use the desktop version of certain websites - eBay, to name a few.

When browsing on this, do websites return mobile versions or would it be similar to having a standard laptop or desktop?

    Thanks in advance.

    • standard desktop - it's a laptop that also goes into tablet mode, but its a PC first and foremost.

  • I'm going overseas soon. Can't claim tax on this can I?

  • Could the users of the i7 version please tell me the average battery life they're getting with this laptop? I was waiting for the new XPS 13's price to go down as $1522 after the 15$ discount code for the mid-range version was still too expensive for a uni student. According to some reviews they were able to get around 8-10 hours with the XPS 13 whilst using for daily tasks (watching hd movies, web, etc).

    • You don't have to wait, you can get a 15% off the mid range new XPS 13 through Powerbuy's Dell XPS Laptop Coupon right now.

  • A quick question -
Anyone knows if buying the i7 via Ebay will attract any duties/taxes as it is shipped from outside AU and priced above 1000$ ?

    • The ebay page will calculate the customs and duties for you. If you give me a url I'll report back.

      • Thanks.
Couldn't find where that would be on the page.

        The URL is:
        http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-XPS-12-2-in-1-Ultrabook-Lapt…

The reason I ask, is because this is a "Dell Australia" Ebay site, so I assumed (possibly wrong) that it will be treated like an Australian seller, then I noticed that it is shipped from Malaysia.. So not quite sure anymore about the duties/tax aspects.

        Any ideas ?

        • +1

Dell Australia is an Australian based retailer that operates under Australian business & consumer law. The Dell eBay store is an official Dell Australia store. Dell prices usually include GST and delivery, so there should not be any additional duties/taxes payable.

        • @1bug:

          Thanks for your answer !

        • It's usually under the shipping charges.

In this case, there's no customs because it's treating it as you buying locally.

        • @lostn:

          Thanks !

Using the Qantas Mall/Linked CC I get another 3700FF Points as well :)

  • owned one for 6 months now. nice piece of kit in every way. still cheaper to use priceusa.com.au.

  • Guys who bought the laptop with the free Venue tablet, have you got one order confirmation for the whole order or two separate ones, i.e. one for laptop and one for tablet? If two separate, did you get the tablet confirmation with zero or 299$ price?

    • got 2 separate ones as they had said originally on the email. The tablet is billed at 299

    • Two seperate and $299. The tablet arrived on Friday, apparently it was sent from Sydney, whereas the laptop was sent from Malaysia I believe.

      • What model of the Venue 8 Pro tablet are people getting from this? Specs?
Looks like there are a few different "Venture 8 Pro" models.
$299 suggests the 3000 Series Tablet?

        • Yep, Series 3000, Model 3845 according to the box
