Microsoft are offering a free domain name and a web site as part of their Office Live Basic product. I can't really see a catch except that they require a credit card number to register. From the horse's mouth:

Microsoft Office Live Basics is the easy way to get started on the Web. If you have always wanted your own Web site, Microsoft Office Live Small Business has just made it easier — much easier.

  • Free domain name and Web hosting
  • Easy-to-use Web site design tools
  • 500 MB of Web site storage space
  • 25 company-branded e-mail accounts
  • Web site reports
  • Search advertising tool with $50 credit*

  • It seems you need to live in the US to get this offer…

    • Can you tell me where it says you need to be in the US?

If so its a shame, i've always wanted a free domain name.

      • just buy one. godaddy.com is cheap as chips! $10AUD or so, particularly now that the exchange rate is so good.

      • try to register, unless i am greatly mistaken you can't change the country to australia

      • What Gaz said. You can't change the country for contact details, and since a credit card is required you probably won't be able to sign up with bogus address.

  • That's terribly ironic, because they use Melbourne IT as their domain registrar:
    http://office.microsoft.com/client/helppreview.aspx?AssetID=…

It also gives you the list of Microsoft branches that you would be dealing with depending on what country you're from, and Australia is listed there:
    http://office.microsoft.com/client/helppreview.aspx?AssetID=…

Oh well. Guess the proof is if anybody actually tries and registers one. I don't need this (don't own a business).
