Best Reliable Android App to Use in JAPAN to Keep in Touch

So me and my partner are on telstra and boost prepaid, based on the telstra info page it states international roaming will automatically be active no need to setup anything.

as the rates are high to call, receive and use data i am aiming we grab a pair of prepaid sims from Japan and use either hangouts to make voice calls, video calls , google maps in case we get lost or split ways to shop and what not.

can anyone advise have they recently used hangouts in japan or advise of another app maybe viber or skype?

the sim we are looking at

opting for the 14day card, has anyone used these and is it reliable?

thanks

Not familiar with prepaidsim.jp but I've had multiple friends use bmobile in Japan and it has been very solid - works in the ski fields, mostly for Whatsapp but a bit of video chatting as well.

Why don't you go another avenue and rent a pocket wifi from http://japan-wireless.com ?

If you and you partner always plan to be together in Japan then you only need one and can connect up to 5 devices, but I think it's still worth it to rent one each for when you guys do head off in other directions, that's what I did. For 14 days you could have a 21mbps device with unlimited data for 6900Yen(including shipping).

It makes it super easy to use Skype/Whatsapp/Line/Facebook and the all important google maps.

  • Line: is the probably the most popular instant messaging type app used in Japan (by Japanese and Gaijin). Which was briefly mentioned above.

You might want to also install "Japan Connected" (for iOS/Android) which will give you free wifi around Japan, details:

Edit: For the last 2 years/trips I've also used bmobile and had great service and no issues, very fast too. I will however be comparing current offerings to see which is the best deal, for an upcoming visit in April.

  • I use Line as well for my friends in Japan and Viber too
