Note if you want to sign up to Stan multiple times to get multiple voucher codes, you'll need to use a different credit card and email address each time.

OP - can you please update your Stan link to https://www.stan.com.au/chromecast

    • -4

Why would you want to have multiple vouchers? It's not like we want more than one chromecast at home? Can you please elaborate?

      • +4

Maybe some people do need more than one at home.

        • I see. Thanks

        • +1

Yep that's it. One for lounge room, one for bedroom, one for in-laws, one for friend's birthday present, etc.

  • +3

Don't you have to sign up at this address though? http://www.stan.com.au/chromecast
Edit: yep you do, thanks op for not having the right address :\

Hijacking this for some info about Stan:

      • Stan has a couple of cool shows/films that aren't on Netflix (Better Call Saul, Avatar: the Last Airbender TV show, Misfits) so the free trial is worth it (you'll only want to watch the first 2 seasons of Misfits anyway)

      • The Stan app only works on relatively new phones. I have a Galaxy S2 - nope too old, apparently. (Chromecast is a lot less useful if you need to control it with a PC - in most cases, you'd just plug your laptop directly into the TV instead).

      • If you use a service like getflix you can change the country you receive Netflix from = different content (Better Call Saul for example).

  • +1

Sorry guys. Updated with the correct link.

  • +3

    Take that Gerry and HN.

This $5 prepaid visa card is coming in very handy https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/175811. Has worked for Netflix, Presto, Stan.

    • I was all ready this morning to buy from Gerry. Good old Dick came through.

      • +3

        Everyone loves Dick ….wait wut?

  • -8

    Doesn't work.

    • Worked for me, wrong trial link was put up first though.

    • Did u use the right link?

  • can I add shipping to it? (happy to pay the postage or is only for click and collect?

    • Yeh, cost extra though

  • Thanks!

  • +1

Anyone else having issues clicking the "Start free trial" on Stan? Doesn't seem to open up a new page or send me an email.

    • +1

I just did it, went through fine

      • Wasn't working on chrome for some reason, IE fine though. Cheers mate.

  • is chromecast worth getting?

    • -3

Not if you don't know already

    • Depends on 1)do you have a smart tv? and 2)what you currently use to stream to tv?

      • Don't have smart TV, just normal LCD TV

I don't stream anything to tv,

I got a media player (http://www.productreview.com.au/p/astone-mp-310dt.html) that I play videos from my pc to my TV

the media player is connected via ethernet

        • +1

Well it has a inbuilt netflix and youtube app, you can stream from your iphone/ipad,android phone/tablet, and you can stream things like stan, netflix, etc from pc to tv.

        • @Venom_TAG:

would it be better to get this

or an actual media player like

          -roku
          -android media player e.g. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/187480

Can it browse my windows share folders to play any video files?

or do I need to play it on my phone first then click stream button?

        • @Venom_TAG: thanks for the info. I haven't had a need for cromecast in the past but my smart tv is loosing youtube after this month so knowing it has the YouTube app makes my decision to finally buy!

        • @tyler.durden:
Probably an actual media player like a roku; it has the apps (and more) chromecast does, and can play from usb. And I think maybe you can stream from your iphone to it?

        • @Venom_TAG:

so chromecast can't browse my window share folder to play any filetype?

          -video
          -music

        • @tyler.durden:
No, it can't do that. Think of Chromecast as a bridge between your TV and your phone/tablet/laptop.

        • @tyler.durden: You can certainly play local files from network shares, but you need a app running on your PC/Phone/Tablet/NAS to serve them to Chromecast.

Running a Plex server on your PC is by far your best option, but there are plenty of other ways (eg. Infuse on iOS, BubbleUPnP on Android)

        • @SteveBuscemi:

So if I run a plex server on my pc, the chromecast can stream it?

btw I think streaming via plex reduces the video quality, compared to just playing the video file directly from a shared folder..
because plex needs to encode the file..
So a 1080p file streaming via wifi won't look as good as a 1080p file playing directly via the media player..

Not to mention if they will be any stutter..

What do you think? is it true?

Sounds like alot of extra walkaround just to do a something simple ..like playing videos shared from a pc..

Guess it is better if I get a proper media play or build my own htpc..

        • @tyler.durden: Yes, if there's a Chromecast on your network, it shows up in the Plex app / Web interface as an option to play to.

Whether or not it re-encodes the video stream depends on the source video. Plex Chromecast has a 12Mbps video stream limit (roughly 5.4GB per hour). So if you're playing huge 20 and 30GB 1080p P2P rips, you're right, it will reduce the quality. If you grab the smaller 1080 scene releases, or virtually any 720, it should direct play. Similarly, DTS audio will be transcoded by the Plex server, AC3 will not (if you enable passthrough).

An RPi2 running OpenELEC (or Rasplex) is inarguably a better media player for files IMO. But then you need another device to Netflix/Stan/etc. Chromecast is certainly "good enough" for many people (or as a secondary device).

    • Worth every penny!!! I have a kid and this saves me from buying all those silly kids DVDs that I can stream from YouTube for free.

  • Awesome deal, just signed up and got the ChromeCast for $29.05, thanks OP!

  • +2

Thanks OP - took 2 minutes and the voucher came through straight away. Heading off to pick up another Chromecast to add to the collection :-)

  • can anyone send me a screen shot of the dicksmith checkout with the price of $29.05? so I can claim price protection. Thanks

  • Is this offered for existing customers? I wouldn't mind a second

    • +1

Yes! I sent them an email via support and had a reply in about 5 mins with a link to page and code.

  • Got one thanks OP!!

  • is $6 credit still available?

    • Nope.

  • +1

Best price yet for Chromecast? Locked one in now that Netflix has launched.

  • +10

Thanks, all worked fine for me. I've been moving my Chromecast back and forth between TVs. Told Hubby I couldn't pass up a second one at this price. He still has a slightly concerned look on his face, I think because of my cupboard full of eneloops.

    • +1

I cannot believe Hubby didn't get you one for Valentine's Day.

  • +1

Nice. Best price in long time? so finally decided to get one.

Does seem somewhat confusing at first though with the pricing as it's listed as $45 on DS page and the Stan sign up page is only showing a $10 off promo which makes it $39.

But … when entering the Stan code at the DS checkout - final click & collect is indeed $29.05.

  • Signed up at stan. Got a confirmation mail but no voucher.

    • Did you use the specific link in the comments?

    • "Got a confirmation mail but no voucher."

Curiously, with the gmail EM address I used to sign up with the confirmation email arrived in my normal inbox, but the voucher email went to my "promo" inbox (or with other types of email, it could go to a "junk" folder or a "spam" folder); so check all folders hombre.

    • Not sure if it's too late, but when I did it in the afternoon, I posed a question on their website and lo and behold, a reply came through with a code within 15 minutes.

  • DSE don't let me go through click&collect for reduce price. It changes back to $45.\
Edited: paid via paypal for $29.05. Thanks OP.

  • +1

Thanks OP!! Now I'm glad Harvey Norman pulled theirs off from online.

For those which thought their code didn't work, make sure you enter it when you've got delivery selected. Once the coupon is applied, then choose Click & Collect or it won't work otherwise!

    • I tried my code with click and collect and it didn't work, so I changed it to delivery. Still didn't work. I've sent a support ticket to Stan.

      • Same issue here.

Tried the code for delivery and got the message that the code is invalid.

  • thanks OP, good deal, bought one, but unable to use the BigW eGift card for some reason……

  • For some reason when checking out and using PayPal, I'm not charged with any shipping fees?

    • +1

It will show up on the next screen.

  • Thanks a lot OP.
For those of you who bought discounted $10 Dick Smith giftcards awhile back, don't forget to use them. Expiry is 1 year.

    • Yeppers I used mine for this without a problem; which is great because I've been struggling to find sommat to use it on! So given that that voucher cost $5, that brings the cost of this chromecast thingy down to $24. Awesome, and cheers OP for the timely post!

      • Haha, I have also been waiting forever to use my 2 $10 vouchers and this seemed like the perfect time considering all the decent stuff is always excluded during any sales Dick ever has.

  • +3

Wow Stan app installs on nothing.

    • Yep, out of 4 devices under my google account, only the broken kmart tablet is supported…

      • It installed on my cheap-assed 7" Pendo no worries… But who cares anyways… this deal was never about "Stan" ;)

  • +1

Fantastic. I was really disappointed when Gerry pulled the pin on the $33 deal this morning. Thank you!

  • $35 Delivered. Can't go wrong :)

  • +1

can you use chromecast to stream AFL app to tv ?(free yearly pass)

    • +1

Yep, I used it to stream from my phone to my TV throughout the NAB cup.

There's no option in the AFL app to do it, you just have to "cast screen" from within the chromecast app.

      • thanks!

  • +4

Thanks OP, up yours HN for omitting the chromecast from your online store.

  • -2

If anybody has a spare code, could they PM it to me as my trial with Stan already expired and I only have one CC :(
Seriously guys? Why the negs? I got a pre-launch invite to Stan, so I signed up and my trial is over. It won't let me make another account without subscribing.

  • How long does it takes to get the code? It's been an hour and I'm still waiting :(

    • Email them (via the support portal on their website), I just did and they got back within 5 minutes!

    • Got mine instantly. Maybe check your junk mail :)

  • My stan code isn't valid ?? any ideas?

  • With a 2.5 megabit ADSL connection is it worth getting into 'video on demand' with a Chromecast?
I don't mind waiting for a buffer to fill up before starting the show.

    Thanks.

  • +3

This will be a reminder for me to check Ozbargain before leaving the house. Just bought one from Harvey Norman for $38.

    • +2

Return it and once you receive your refund show them that you can purchase it from DS for only $29.05.

      • Might just return it since the quality isn't great. Mainly talking about the Plex app. My TV's inbuilt streaming app streams at a higher quality but has an average UI. Youtube app also cuts off the edges.

        • Really, HD quality on mine. You sure it's not an issue with your Wi-Fi setting?

        • Checked that. Switched the streaming quality to original and videos are 1080p blu rays rips but still notice pixelation compared to the TV's streaming app. It's a 4K TV so it probably has to do with the upscaler and Chromecast. Will return and buy Chromecast 2.0 if they make one.

  • Thanks OP. I purchased 2 at HN this morning for 38 each but given they have stuffed us around with their voucher I'm going to return them on the principle of it. Have now purchased one at DSE for 29 instead. And I didn't really neeD two of them so there's another saving!

    • Yes I returned mine to HN that I purchased this morning and just collected from DSE. :) A nice additional 5% on the $29.05 with WISH cards from RACV.

  • Finally sprung for a Chomecast. Great deal! Thanks, OP :D

  • I have two TV at home, always waiting to get another one for the other TV.
Friends usually amazed by how much I can do with that little stick.
Thanks and now I got Netflix, Presto, Fetch and last but not least STAN. I'll never leave home :)

Edit: Just got a text - Chromecast stick is ready to be picked up ^^

  • Hi guy's just wondering what is the benefit of a ChromeCast as opposed to a http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/EZCAST-Miracast-TV-Dongle-Chromec… or http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/New-A2W-Miracast-TV-Chromecast-DL… considering I'll only be using it to stream movies and a bit of YouTube?.

    • IMHO, for a similar price, I'd say it's better to get Chromecast as it works with other mobile apps such as https://www.google.com.au/chrome/devices/chromecast/apps.htm…
Google is working on getting more apps on board and also I use Chromecast with my iPad & Mac as well.

      • Seems as though there's definitely more apps available with the ChromeCast, Was thinking of using the $10 PayPal voucher that's all. Anyway I'll prolly just grab this one and save the vouch, thanks!

        • Haven't you got one of those $10 Dick Smith vouchers everyone on here bought a few months ago for $5? They work nicely for this deal…

        • @GnarlyKnuckles: Must of missed that one unfortunately:/, I bought the ChromeCast anyway:).

        • +2

          @Tasmaniac:
Meh, even without that at $29 it is still the cheapest Chromecast I've ever seen anywhere, so you've done well. Big ups to the OP for this one.

  • Cheers OP, great deal!!!

We didn't really need a Chromecast considering the other 10 devices we have in the house but at this price it was impossible to resist.

  • I have got Netflix on a Sony smart TV. Is there a point getting chromecast?

  • As an apple user I'm trying to understand if this has any value for me. I currently use AirPlay to my appletv from my iPhone and iPad. Does chromecast offer anything beyond my setup? It seems to be even app specific?? AirPlay works with everything. Trying to understand as chromecast seems to be a limited subset of what AirPlay offers??? But this cannot be based on the unbridled enthusiasm here??

    • Similar to AirPlay, but it works for Android, Linux and Windows users (assuming they're running Chrome), whereas AirPlay is (without modification) Mac and iOS limited.

AirPlay streams content using your device (iPad, iPhone, Mac) as a host (eg. when watching YouTube on your iPad, the iPad downloads/streams the video then mirrors it onto the TV).
Chromecast actually uses the TV as a host and your device (Smartphone, Computer) as a remote to control what it plays, however you can also mirror your Chrome browser windows to the TV like you can do with AirPlay.

tl;dr if you only have/use Apple products and AirPlay is working fine for you, don't bother buying this :)

      • Recently sold my Apple TV, swapped for 2 Chromecasts with profit. I was only using Apple TV for Netflix, which I can now do with Chromecast + stream local media via Plex. In my experience Chromecast provides a better experience than Apple TV. However if you've invested heavily in iTunes media then you probably should stick with Apple TV.
