  • Cheers, just started looking for a switch this morning.

    • If you have an MSY or Umart nearby they're cheaper than these prices…

Just looked in Big W, a lot of marked down gear, unfortunately most of it was well overpriced to begin with, or is really old.

These are old models. Even that Netgear ADSL modem (modem only no Wifi) for $40 mentions supporting Windows 7 on the box so it must be quite an old model. And yet you can buy the Netgear DGN1000v3 wireless modem from COTD for $30 delivered. That's a better deal in that case.

I'm just after a switch so I don't have to keep unplugging the TV to the Apple TV.
Surely they are still better than wifi?

Also op, are they in the entertainment area or stationary area?

      • It might depend on the location. At the stores I know, they're next to stationery. Usually near toys.
        I skipped the stationary jokes.

        • The store i know has the modems, routers and switches near the stationery too and not far from the toys also. Just right next to where the printers are.

    • Yes, some of those models are quite old, especially the DM111p ADSL modem, I got rid of one like 3 years back. I think they first came to market back in 2010. The one BigW is selling must be a later revision, probably made 2~3 years back, but still its based on very old hardware. You can buy much newer and faster equipment for a similar price.. so don't see much of a point in buying those old stuff now even at 1/2 price.

      • Actually i'd say it must be the original DM111p modem since it says Supports Windows 7 on the box. So obviously it was made when Windows 7 was the new mainstream version of Windows and probably Windows 8 wasn't out at the time. This modem must have been sitting on the shelf for the past 4 or 5 years or so. It's no wonder with the overpricing that Big W had going on. Also expect the latest firmware for the modem to be rather old.

Any way. I don't need this Netgear modem as i just bought a Netgear DGN1000 N150 wireless ADSL modem from COTD eBay store for $28.43 delivered and it arrived as the DGN1000v3 model dated 2013 on the box the the latest firmware is dated in June 2014. Just for $30 i didn't think that was too bad.

I made a typo in my previous post when i said $30 delivered. It the Netgear DGN1000 modem is actually $28.43 delivered from COTD eBay store.

      • What about the Ethernet switches? Is there better options for my needs? Just want to split the connection at a power line adapter instead of unplugging all the time.
        Its only for TV streaming.

        • You are better off searching statice for a 5 port gigabit switch.
Or ebay. I bought a 5 port gigabit switch (with jumbo frame support, 3 year warranty) for $25 including postage. The switch in the picture is only 100mb.

        • @jimbo jones:

You are better off searching statice [sic] for a 5 port gigabit switch.

Why are 5 ports better than 8 ???

        • @jimbo jones:
5 ports aren't better than 8, unless you only need 5 or less, in which case they're the same.
The advantage is Gigabit versus 10/100.
It's fairly safe to assume you wont need more than 5 ports for an entertainment unit switch Unless you're a gaming nut.
eg. Devices you might own that could plug into a switch are: TV, XBOX ONE, PS4, Apple TV and cable to modem

        • @scubacoles:

Just about all of those have WiFi capabilities except maybe for the TV so you wouldn't really need an ethernet switch for that. You definitely don't need Gigabit for an Apple TV and i doubt for a gaming console either.

        • @hollykryten:
Ethernet far more reliable than WiFi. If you're running Ethernet for 1 device I'd be running for all.

  • Do they sell any switches with POE?

    • +1

I highly doubt any mainstream retailer will sell PoE switches.

      • Tplink tenda etc half added China ones do

        • Know of any decent priced gigabit 802.3at ones ? They seem to charge a rediculous premium just for some extra voltage

        • @cozmo:
          Check out Alloy's range

        • @SuiCid3:
thx will keep them in mind for the future.

    Hey asharmain,
