Hi Kiwipride,

I think it depends on the store you’re going to. Some stores match the price anyway some don’t. I will get one today and see what happen.

Lol
thats funny,
why would you return a $2 Kingston flash drive?
You do know that Kingston manufactures its own memory, and they known to be the best manufacturer in memory world wide.

Actually almost ALL manufacturers don’t make their own memory chips any more. They usually outsource them to some company in china nowadays.

imo. Kingston isn’t really that good, its just 1 step up from being “generic” POS. Where as Sandisk is one step up above that.

Which is why i’ve noticed the kingston usb sticks seem to be a lot slower than sandisk ones. Also they aren’t known to be the best manufactuers, there is better ones such as CORSAIR.

it’s depended on what do mean of memory chips.

USB Drive (final product) yes, I believe China make(assemble) the most USB Drive nowady

Flash Memory (the chip inside the USB), Major Mfy are Micron, Samsung, Hynix, Toshiba, Numonyx etc their factories are major located in US, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Singapore etc

No stock for me in Sydney South.

These are excellent devices - I have a 2GB version and it works very well… I’d get the 8gb over the 4gb one though - only $18.71 on the officeworks site as well. Only problem is there are no officeworks stores up here.

I brought 5 X 4GB and 5 X 8GB from Maribyrnong Officeworks, Unit 2, 169 Rosamond Road 03 9319 8400. The sales guy call Scott. He was very helpful. He placed the order on the system and will call me for pick up once it arrived. I believe you can do it in any OW stores.

deek on 23/11/2009 - 13:22 ¶

Was that “4GB max” referring to the maximum file size, or the total storage size?

All FAT filesystems have a maximum filesize of 4GB. No matter how big your storage is, you cannot create a file greater than 4GB.

If the total storage size is only 4GB, your friend may have mistakenly created a FAT16 partition. They’ll only go up to 4GB in size.

“I think it’s better deal than $2 for 4GB because you can return the item if you’re not happy with it.”

This made me laugh. It’s $2! For what it’s worth, I did pick up 2x4Gb sticks for $2 each from my local MLN store (Essendon, Victoria).

I went to Officeworks, South Melbourne to see if I could get this deal from the store. To my surprise they had the 16GB Cruzer Titanium for $49.90. I decided to buy it, went to the counter, scanned it and the price appeared as $37.46!! There were a few left.

“Friend of mine brought a 8GB USB from overseas but it can only store upto 4GB max?”

that’s because he bought a fake one that’s a 4gb drive modified to report 8gb.

viperxz on 23/11/2009 - 18:21 ¶

I got quoted $31 for postage to Regional QLD on a $7.50 drive, making it $38.50 for a 4gb drive.

Since it is a flat shipping rate, I would need to buy at least 6 drives to make this a better deal than purchasing their $12.95 drives in store.

I suppose if I were purchasing 100 drives this would be ok, but I only need one :(

Nice. Recently went into officeworks looking for a good cheap stick (I’ve got a few non-titanium cruzers, love the retractble thing) but all they had were overrpiced and had a loose-able cap.

This is a good deal, especially for people not living in Melbourne area to get the Kingston 4G for $2 deal. But… a better deal overall? Hm….

  • The Kingston 4G for $2 is still available and MLN still have lots in the warehouse. How many people managed to get the Sandisk 4G for $7.46?
  • Kingston 4G’s read speed (25MB/sec) is better than the Sandisk (15MB/sec)
  • Sandisk’s write speed (9MB/sec) is better than the Kingston 4G (5.7MB/sec)
  • Both have 5 year warranty
  • Sandisk has the added software (but do you really need them?)
  • Sandisk supports ReadyBoost (a plus, but it’s much better to get more RAM for your PC/laptop than rely on ReadyBoost)

Which deal is better? You decide. But, for a small company like MLN to get hundreds, if not thousands of those Kingston 4G USB drives so that people can actually get them at an unbelievable price, they are doing us a big favour.

Torres on 24/11/2009 - 08:09 ¶

Hi Netsurfer,

Thank you for your time in comparing the two products. However, according to the Kingston website
http://www.kingston.com/flash/DTIG2.asp?id=2 the read/write speed maybe less than 10MB/5MB unless I am comparing the different product? so on specification - Sandisk is better but the fact is that it’s more expansive.

I guess the reason I said it is a better deal because of the following:

  1. “for a small company like MLN” - I am quoting your words, they will not sale anything under cost - let’s face it. so if they made $1 out of the Kingston 4gb - the cost of the item is around $1. The question is “What’s wrong with costing a $1” That’s right! It must be a reason for costing it at $1.

  2. If the item was free for them because it comes free with the amount of notebook they sold. Why don’t they sale it for $4 dollars - “$1 per GB” it still so cheap, isn’t it?

  3. They are a notebook specialist - why they are selling usb memory? it must be a reason?

Whereas the sandisk was purely sold under cost and as I said, you can refund it for whatever reasons. This is a good thing to buy from Australian retailers.

This is only my opinion and my personal value.

Don’t get me wrong, I think MLN is a successful company and they are one of Asus bigger reseller. So well done MLN to come out with this deal but personally I would go for Sandisk from OW. But with Asus notebook - I would get it from MLN.

netsurfer on 24/11/2009 - 09:33 ¶

Let the people decide which one is better. People have voted.

  1. Kingston obviously under quoted the speed. The speed I quoted is measured / tested (actual speed).
  2. Do you have any proof that they have those USB sticks for free? They sell them for $2 each because they want to provide a good deal.
  3. OfficeWorks is not a USB memory specialist either. Why are they selling them cheap and under stocking them? It must be a reason?

Have you been to MLN? They don’t just sell notebooks. They are basically like other computer stores. Don’t just assume because they are small, something must be wrong.

Shops like MLN, MSY get items in huge quantities (just like OfficeWorks). However, they are willing to pass on the saving to us in a big way.

You don’t need to trash the other deal. A good deal is good. Personally, I could not even be bothered calling OW. People have indicated that these Sandisk USB drives are out of stock.

If people believe this deal is better, it will get more postive votes than the other deal. So far, most people think the other one is better (and that’s a fact).

Yes, good deal but same as some others have said - $10+ delivery/handling fee doesn’t make it such a good deal. Don’t know how to vote a +ve.
