Dumbbells / Barbells What and Where to Buy Tips?

Recently my wife and I tried out F45 Gym using a Groupon voucher. Their 45-minute functional training sessions were very good, but in the long term it is very hard to justify the cost (cheapest plan is >$50/week, or pay $25 for a single session).

An alternative could be a low cost gym like Jetts. Lacking organised sessions we would have to re-create the exercise program ourselves. That looks quite feasible, actually, but of course it is harder to self-motivate than being pushed by a group.

But even a low-cost gym would add up to > $1000 per year for the two of us. So the question is: why not get a decent set of dumbbells and barbells for home use. That, plus a medicine ball, would cover 90% of the equipment used in a typical F45 session.

The questions for you in the forum: What is a good price level for weight sets?

A couple of offers on Ebay that look like good quality add up to about $4/kg, for example this one: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/1kg-15kg-Rubber-Hex-Dumbbell-Set-…

Shipping to Perth would kill all the Ebay offers I found. Can anyone recommend a good local shop here? Any sales that bring the price lower than $4/kg (i.e. wait for end of fiscal year)? Any other tips on what to look out for to get good quality?

Flex equipment in malaga is a decent place in Perth

Some packages work out to be under $4/kg

Was the cheapest place when I shopped around for a powercage (late last year), not sure how good their dumbbells are

    • Thanks! Great link, some of the specials are better than anything I found by using Google.

Great reminder, that should get us started and then we just fill any gaps from a shop.

  • If you want cheap then Kmart has some cheap dumbells, barbells and weights. Quality-wise I never liked the grip on these, but nothing some ducktape couldn't fix.

    • Good price for a variable dumbbell with iron plates.

The problem with the kind of functional workout we plan to do is that we need different weights for different exercises and have only 20 seconds rest between, not enough time to swap weight plates.

I don't see a way around having a set of different fixed dumbbells. Fortunately, unlike people doing weight training, we don't expect to need very high weights.

At the moment we are trying to see if we an get all equipment we need (including a bench and rubber mats for the floor) for less than the annual fee we'd pay at Jetts.

  • Do you have a Sportsmart there? It has every thing to do with gym .
