Anyone know if there are going to be new laptops using the new Atom X3, X5 and X7 processors?

Asides from the new Surface, that is.

    • +2

The new Atom chips are aimed at tablets, not really the laptop market. Braswell chips are coming for laptops with replacement Celerons/Pentiums that are slightly higher power but won't destroy your battery life.

The atom X chips are only 2W, meaning fully fanless design. The chip in this laptop is 7.5W, the new Braswell chips will be 6W. So the likely result is slightly better performance with better battery life. An Atom X7 would give you lower performance but with great battery life (so long as everything else is made to be low on power usage).

  • +1

    Thanks eastern

    • +2

Thanks to you for mentioning the deal is the comments of the DSE deal :)

  • Very similar model, specs: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Acer-Aspire-E15-ES1-511-C50C-No…

About 7 hours battery life, not bad at all for a budget laptop.

    • Do they have the same battery? Definitely grabbing it if so

      • Should be similar-this model has a smaller screen though, but the CPU is very power efficient so I'd say you'd get close.

  • +27

Is the RAM able to be upgraded as per the DSE deal? If so, could be the deal the missus is after.. Afterall, I'm sure she'd appreciate 14 inches instead of the 10 inches she's been used to..

    • +1

Was wondering the same thing. There should be one extra slot for RAM. At least you could replace the ram with a 4gb one and sell the 2gb one on eBay.

    • +6

I've opened it, there's only 1 slot for RAM.

Mum only watches movies and surfs the net, but its a big sluggish to be honest.

You guys reckon 4gb ram is enough? or should I go for the 8gb?

Same question for 60gb or 120gb SSD? She stores most of her stuff on an external drive.

      • +1

I'd go 8gb if it'll take it plus a 120gb SSD.. wouldn't take long to fill up but couldn't see the value in getting a bigger drive..

      • +6

Only movies and browsing web I would say 4 GB would be suffice, but bear in mind loading up a number of tabs in browser (specially with lots of image contents) same time eats up quite a bit RAM. For SSD 120 GB will be safer as OS itself and handful of softwares will easily fill up 60 GB.

      • with that one slot, what is the max ram you can slap on?

      • +2

I'd go 8GB for myself without a doubt, but if your mother doesn't use a gazillion browser tabs (like I do) then 4GB would suffice.

The price difference is almost double, 4GB $40, 8GB ~$80. So your budget might have the final say. You could perhaps sell the 2GB stick on eBay (~$15).

As for SSD, Forget about 60GB, that's 2010. You can get a nice Samsung 850 EVO for just over $100. Cheaper brands for less but the Sammy is a safe reliable choice.

    • +10

      Oh I'm sure she'd appreciate those extra inches ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

      • +13

LOL I am glad I am not the only one who completely misinterpreted that comment and the positives attached with it…

        • +9

I thought he made the comment intentionally, and upvoted him because of it.

        • +2

@DuckDuck: As did I.. then I realised all the responses were serious.
And at the time snynx's comment was on like -9 I was like wtf. LOL

" Afterall, I'm sure she'd appreciate 14 inches instead of the 10 inches she's been used to.."

      That's what she said…?

  • +1

thx, was going to grab the other one but lucky i held off out of laziness :D grabbed this instead

  • This post confuses me, so the DSE one is cheaper?

    • +2

Yeah, this is supposedly a better laptop though.

    • +3

Yes, however performance wise, one of the more important parts is roughly twice as fast. The part in question also isn't one that you could upgrade yourself in the future. It's a better bang for buck in other words.

    • for $12 more, you get a better CPU

  • +1

Might wait for the 14" full hd screen laptop for $100 more that kogan is selling from 20th May .

    • +6

      remember that's $100 More.

As an ozbargainer, $100 is a significant saving that you can further spend on eneloops :p

      • Mate i have 88 DSE Batteries AA 2200mah i got for $1.85 a pack of 4 a while back plus about 30 eneloops so im batteried out. A fhd 14" screen would be nice though.

    • link pls?

      edit: is this it?

      • yes

    • Looks decent but if you are planing n keeping it a long time and a part goes what do you do?

  • +2

As per the previous post, what we're looking at here is a light, cheap, and thoroughly usable QC machine. 16 screws in the back cover are all that stands between you and upgrading the HDD to an SSD, popping out the (single) 2GB RAM to replace it with more (if you insist), or adding a DVD (the connectors are on the mobo, plastic dummy holds its place). x64 Win8 drivers on the website are good for x86 Win7 too… If you'll excuse the fuzziness take a look, buy, and hey- enjoy living here in the future.

    • +2

Based on your image, what converter (as the connection type looks different) do I need if I want to move the HDD over the the DVD side. I'm going to put the SSD where the HDD is now.

Edit: I just need a DVD to HDD caddy.

  • +9

Would one of these run minecraft ok or would it need more ram?

    • +18

Why did I get negged I just wanted to know because my kids play minecraft?

      • +2

The framerates will be pretty choppy. You'll have to play on the lowest quality settings possible to achieve close to 40-30 fps.

No mods though, that'll be too taxing on the processor.

you should look into using Optifine if you need to play Minecraft on a crappy PC.

        • Thanks for the info scrimshaw. My kids currently play minecraft with mods on our acer aspire 5560 but looking to get another cheap laptop because they are always fighting over who gets to use it:)

      • Yeh IDK it's a pretty common question https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pVNvSuA2mM

  • would one of these be ok for a media streamer/ so Hdmi from laptop to TV/
Will it be fast enough to display via hdmi to my 50" Plasma say even a 10gb Rip from the laptop ????
will the laptops 1366 x 768 screen be a problem showing FullHd content on the Plasma in full hd ???

    thanks

    • Should be fine. Video output should be to the resolution of your TV, not the laptops screen.

      • Be careful there mate. Plenty of cases where output has been restricted to clone the laptop screen because integrated graphics is not marketed as a dual-head replacement.

        • thats what i was thinking, $100 more gets you full hd and 4gb ram any ways

        • +1

Umm if I use the integrated gfx card on my laptop (HD3000) it can easily output 1920x1080 via hdmi. I can also have the laptop screen on at the same time with its native resolution of 1366x768

        • Indeed, our household has a Dell Inspiron laptop from back in the day that is limited to laptop's capability. Compared to a newer ASUS laptop with dedicated graphics and can output based on receiving TV's capability.

        • @CVonV: so the Gfc card is able to transmit at 1080P but the screen is only 1366, is that what your saying, and will it handle 10gb mobies to plasma ??

        • @Belv:

          yes.

there's no issue with running a dual setup with the integrated gfx card.. I've had 3 laptops with switchable gfx cards (dedicated + integrated).. using the intel integrated one never had issues running a different resolution separately or at the same time as the laptop's native screen resolution

but as thisplus mentioned above, perhaps the older generations had problems.

my 4 year old eMachines netbook can output > native resolution via its VGA port.

  • Would this be sufficient for uni? Anyone know how the battery life is?

    • +3

it has a 4 cell battery, probably 5-6 hours at most.

The CPU will only be so-so — not fast, but good enough for word processing and the like.

multitasking will be pretty lousy if you don't upgrade the RAM.

      • +1

Upgrade the ram and HD to SSD and you will be fine. If you have some majority taxing tasks then maybe look at using a desktop when required or even remoting in to it. Been using a dual core with 2g for ages and it's fine as long as you aren't doing something ridiculous in excel that you should be using access for. Even if you don't upgrade immediately you have the option down the track if it's insuficient

Doubt it if you are study engineering/science/statistics that requires the use of special softwares. I have a friend owns an ivy bridge i3 laptop which struggle to compute stuff on R.

      • The most demanding program I would use would be excel

  • +1

Need something for $1 so i can claim gst at trs when i go os.

  • this would be significantly faster than a 2009 core 2 duo P7350 + 4gb ram right?

  • +2

Is this Intel HD 3000, 4000 or 4400? Just wondering.

  • Most intriguing, I'm looking for a laptop for the family to watch Youtube, Netflix and check emails.

Most intensive work would be Word Processing with copy/paste from the net.

Thoughts on the laptop? Also, does it lack fans and thus be a concern if used in bed?

    Cheers.

    • +2

Most intensive work would be Word Processing with copy/paste from the net.

Someone in your family studying a degree in nursing at UWS or ACU then?

      http://www.abc.net.au/4corners/stories/2015/04/20/4217741.ht…

      • LOL yes!

Haha nah, family is researching travel so copy and paste reviews to put together plans. Other work is just banking, watching movies etc.

  • And if you make an online inquiry to aami car insurance save the details , and waited for a few days , they will send you an email for a choice of $50 JB HIFI voucher to entice you to sign up for its car insurance , so the laptop it's going to be even cheaper . I'm keeping the voucher for the surface 3 tablet cover when surface 3 goes on special for EOFTY sale ( fingers crossed )

    • Is that only for an enquiry….. it of you take out insurance with them?

      • Obviously if you sign up to their insurance.

  • Anyone want to recommend any other cheaper laptop out there for my old man? basic internet browsing and microsoft word/excel purposes only.

    • You'd be best checking out refurbs or used Dell Lattitude and/or Thinkpads from gumtree/ebay.

  • The aldi laptop with fhd 14" screen has a N3540 2.16ghz and 4 gig ram would that be faster than this N2940 2.25GHz even though the ghz is lower

  • Can anyone recommend which RAM to upgrade with? DDR400 or 800?

Will 800 be too fast for the other components of the laptop to keep up and make a difference (compared to 400)?

EDIT: not sureif I have the numbers (400 & 800) right, but the essence of my question still stands.

Which speed of RAM is the maximum that would be benficial for this laptop?

    • +1

      http://uk.crucial.com/gbr/en/compatible-upgrade-for/Acer/asp…

Hmm, according to that page it only has one slot. And max 8GB

      • Thanks for that additional info!

But still not sure which speed of ram to get.

Will the faster ones all still be functional, but the computer will just not make full use of it?

        • +3

The best option would be to stick with whatever the processor supports natively. That is, DDR3L 1333mhz according to Intel ARK..

If you go higher there's a probability that your computer won't boot, but that depends on the motherboards' capability.

I should also state that the memory must be DDR3L — the low voltage kind operating at 1.35v.

        • @scrimshaw:

Hmm, I wonder if it is just Crucial that ignore the DDR3L and PC3L convention. Their 1.35V memory just shows as DDR3 / PC3

        • @scrimshaw:

Thank you so much for your response! Exactly what I needed to know.

For those with an Amex you can price match at HN and get $50 statement credit when spend over $300.

    • Just got one price matched by HN to use the $50 AMEX credit, which brings the price down to $210. It has basic black finish, nothing is cheerful, but for the price performance it is alright. Will be chucking 8GB stick and 240GB SSD to turn into a cool and quite 24/7 media machine.

      • 8GB AMicroe stick I had works without dramas, which saves me big bucks. I guess it is 1.35v one. Now I am in process of swapping HDD with my previousy purchased 240GB Sandisk SSD.

    • I think this is significant/important enough to add to the OP. OP care to add? Just as a paragraph down the bottom or something.

I bought the lower end version of this laptop last week from the DSE deal, so YMMV…

First laptop I received had issues with the hard drive, came up with boot sector failures a few times and in the end wouldn't boot up at all. Ended up returning to DSE for another laptop.

Second laptop works fine, although there is the usual wait as Windows 8.1 installs all the updates (1.5gb).

    Thoughts:
    - Good battery life, easily 5 hours connected to wifi
    - Screen resolution is sufficient for youtube viewing, although viewing angles are pretty poor if you're not facing the laptop straight on
    - Low power usage and hence the laptop doesn't get too hot after long periods of use
    - Trackpad is serviceable but a bit sticky someties (have to apply more force than normal but nothing major)
    - 1 RAM slot for upgrading to 8GB,,just make sure its DDR3L and not DDR3
    - DVD drive is a dummy, you can put in an ODD or another HDD

Overall it's great for a sub-$300 laptop, fine for web browsing and office applications. But if you're trying to play even basic games (e.g. LoL) then you will definitely need to up the RAM or add a SSD.

Only regret is buying 1 week too early and not waiting for the Sunday DSE deal :(

    • Just curious about battery life - did you do anything demanding like youtubing or was it just web browsing to get through to 5hrs?

      • It was roughly half youtube and half web browsing (1080p quality if that makes a difference)

  • How does it compare to the Acer CB3-111 11.6" Chromebook specwise at the same price? https://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers-tablets/chromebooks/acer…

Obviously the screen is smaller on the CB, but what about the rest?

  • I went to buy this last week and Jb told me you wont be able to upgrade the ram or HDD. So I bought a refurbished lappy elsewhere $120 more and 3 times better.

    • +1

Would you mind saying what you bought, and where from?

        • Is this touchscreen? No mention on dealsdirect description but listed on Toshiba website. 4.8% cashback via cashrewards

        • @rockpeblar:

well picked up.. i doubt it will be.. most likely an error on the Toshiba website.. hopefully @hawkeye can confirm

cashrewards is 5% now too and I found 12% off code "MAYDD12"

          so this is $430.87 (12% off + $4.95 delivery) - $24.20 (5% cashrewards) = $406.67 delivered.

          very interesting

        • +1

          @CVonV:

Can confirm it is touch screen but didn't get a back up CD. outer keyboard still in plastic protective wrap and start up is agreement with Toshiba before windows. box came with 10 toshiba refurbished stickers all over it.

        • @hawkeye:

          Thanks for the confirmation.

Did they supply a tax invoice with GST component?

        • @CVonV:

edit: nvm i checked my umbrella order and yes they do supply tax invoice with GST :D

        • +1

          @CVonV:

email only with gst component no paper invoice supplied

    • +2

The JB guy was wrong on both accounts, RAM + HDD can be swapped.

That said, you certainly got a better laptop, but assuming you'd apply the same treatment as many buying this Acer (8GB+SSD) that potentially bumps the price up to $495 (the Toshiba has dual RAM slots which I'm pretty sure is occupied by 1x4GB, so that means only $40 to reach 8GB)

I'm thinking this Acer with 8GB/SSD would be pretty punchy for light usage.

  • If I was to take out the HDD and 2gb ram because I want to upgrade to 8gb ram ($80) and a 120gb ssd ($90), roughly how much could/should I sell the hdd and ram for?

    • +2

      Good question.

      I'll guesstimate the following:

      RAM $15
      HDD $45

      ($170 - 60)
$110 out of pocket, or $370 at the end of the day.
