HunkofJunk Pro Retina!

Hi.
Now many people won't care and nor would I but id like to share my experience. (Maybe a littllle intoxicimacated)

About a year ago i randomly bought a Macbook air out of the blue and absolutely loved it (Minus the horrid screen) but loved it so much i thought to give the macbook pro a try, Being the screen a huge factor in my purchase I picked up the macbook pro retina 13inch 2014 model and this would be the worst decision ive made yet.

Nothing has ever worked, I can never get the HDMI thingo to work (Screen randomly just comes on after 30minutes, Doesnt display other times) everything and I mean everything crashes and just result in watching things from my phone now and is the slowest pile of junk ive ever owned.

Would like to know other peoples experience with the pro. All I can say is, No thank you.

On another note, Who wants to buy a mint macbook pro?

        • +1

Oh my, Should of read that back

        • @dylanando:
wasnt that what Jobs said about the iphone problems, people are not holding it right?

seriously though, what about warranty? sounds like a pain, sell and move on.

        • @PVA: yeah, this is my conclusion. what to get though.

          @dylanando:
top line xps13 looks good (13inch screen, but lappy the size of 11inch Air), also the HPx360.

        • @PVA: Top of the line xps is abit expensive ! Almost just want the air again.

I think you have a bad machine. The pro is better than the air in every way possible.

    • i cant say anything positive about it. nothing

Except weight and battery life ;)

      • oh my no, my battery last 2-3hrs.

Write a concise list of the problems you have, take it to the apple store, and ask them whats the go. If the list is enough to prove its faulty and its still in warranty period they'll probably fix it or give you a new one. They are usually pretty good with their service.
If you loved the macbook air you should love the pro too, if you can get one that works properly ;) And is the HDMI thingo a cheap ebay adaptor or a genuine apple adaptor. I've heard the cheap ones can have problems… well… ive heard the genuine ones can have problems as well… take advantage of the warranties, if its the cord they may replace it, if its the laptop they may replace the port or the motherboard… don't just settle for a bad device.. If its still under warranty, get them to fix or replace it. They are meant to be good machines.

    • Better money-maker for Apple too.

As tempting as it is to jump on the anti-apple bandwagon, it does sound defective. It happens.

    Take it back.

Broken is broken. Ignore the Apple marketing machine in your brain and take it back.

"But but it's Apple® Pro® Retina®". No. Take it back.

  • Who wants to buy a mint macbook pro?

Sure, if the price is right. I'd be happy to take it to Apple to have it exchanged.

    But 3 things

    1. Are you telling us everything, why haven't you tried to get it fixed
    2. Was it bought new and when in 2014, what was their response. (must have a receipt!)
    3. Its Ozbargain, the price has to be a bargain
    • Yeah brand new from JBHIFI!
What do i say to them? Everything crashes, the OS runs so slow. Id rather run vista!

      • Exactly that.

Call Apple or go to an Apple Store

If it crashes then it will crash while you are there.

So you rather run Vista sounds like you dont want it to work.

        BTW what about the price…

Sorry but so far it sounds like you havent given them a chance to fix it.

        • I think what he meant was, even though Vista is POS, it runs better than his current setup.
Though I completely agree with you on what he should do. Even though I personally think Macbook Pro line is overpriced for what they can do, they are decent in terms of quality; They are pricey but they are good if you can overlook the price tag (though I'd rather go with alternatives). If a new PC/laptop doesn't function well, you take it to the manufacturer or return it since it's likely to be a defect, especially if it has been around for a long time and if it has a large user base.

        • @AznMitch: I wasnt meaning to criticise Vista as I have no idea on how good/bad it is.

The point is even if he said Linux or Dos, if they havent tried to see if it can be repaired then what is the point of the post.

Sure spending a lot on a computer that's not working is a bitch, but that's why you get a warranty, as sometimes something can go wrong. Crashing a lot may be as simple as faulty ram, to something more serious. Point is you give the manufacturer the opportunity to repair it.

This is what I asked. Has he done that?

To which I got no reply

@RockyRaccoon: Vista has a horrible horrible reputation, it was too resource hogging for its time. I know that I am diagressing but Vista apparently got better, but it's pretty much like IE in terms of reputation. That's why I think he've mentioned Vista.

Though yeah, I do agree with you and I've mentioned this as well. If your PC/laptop doesn't work, you return it or take it to the manufacturer. I think it's likely that he've got a defect unit, since if all Macbook Pros are as bad as he describes it to be, I don't think it'd have this large user base (even with their large fanbase, the product has to at least function alright for them to sell for this long).

  • 2-3 hours battery life?

    Nothing has ever worked
    Everything crashes
What you've described is a defective machine, take it to get looked at, as Apple can run pretty comprehensive diagnostics to find out the problems.

At worst you will come out with knowledge on how to use the computer.

Have you used different screens? Different cables? give that a shot to narrow down the issue

Back up your data and make an appointment.

  • As much as I love joining the crowd with the torches, it does sound like a defective product. Take it back or talk to Apple support. Make sure you have recording of what's happening, just in case you need to replicate what's happening for a refund (sometimes, it's hard to replicate the problems at the store).

  • I have one of those and have never had a single problem. It's very fast and smoother than my windows laptop of comparable hardware spec. It has never crashed on me. I keep the OS up to date as well.

I use HDMI on a second monitor or TV very regularly and have never had a problem. I typically watch YouTube or stream TV/video on to the TV via HDMI and use the MacBook's screen to browse the Net of do other work at the same time. Works flawlessly every time with nothing skipping a beat. I also use Air Play to do the same.

I have a number of friends with similar machines and none have ever complained of issues like yours. It may be a defective unit. Just take it in to Apple as it should still be under warranty and they'll fix it up.

Not sure what spec MacBook Pro Retina you have but even the lowest spec one is a fast machine that wouldnt behave like you describe.

  • Mine works fine, yours sounds broken :(
