    Thanks for the deal.

I got excited for a minute as I need to track down many candle globes to fit a chandelier.

In this example, CDL means COOL DAYLIGHT, not candle.
    Please update your legend.

    • +1

      Oops. Thanks for that.

      • +1

Thanks OP, this deal totally lit up my day

  • +1

Thanks! Great savings here - the 12.5w is around $17 in Bunnings, so for $9 it's almost half price!! I stocked up a handful :)

Really happy with the few Philips I've got also - great colour reproduction and brightness!

    • Worth pricematching? Who else stocks these?

      • I guess you could try, but it's an awful lot of hassle and explaining.

I'm just getting tired thinking of how to explain to Bunnings to price match an ebay Dick Smith store with a 15% off coupon added as well.

Is it worth it for another $1 off?

        • They don't hot price match. Means they will do the price, but not the 15% off price

        • @smpantsonfire:

In which case, you're worse off - as you'll forfeit the 15% off for 5% price beat :)

        • Aren't you like eating into that massive 1 dollar saving with additional fuel costs? You might get down to 50c saved!!

  • Note that these LED are not dimmable.

    • -5

this matter why? no matter has dimmable light point anyway

      • +6

This matter if you try to install these on a dimmer switch.
Unless this is what you wanted.

  • +3

Be careful with the WW and CDL for the 12.5w ones - the pictures are swapped around, so look at the description rather than the picture!

Can anyone suggest where I can find GU10 for Philips Cool Daylight?

Another question, it says 5W is equivalent to 25W on the box, is it true or just marketing gimmicks?

    • +1

In the case of proper brands the "equivalent to" will be fairly accurate, but you should always look at the lumens, not the watts. With the proper brands - Philips, Osram, etc. the lumen rating will be accurate.

For non-downlights you should also consider that these spread light in a half-sphere, so they're no good for certain light fixtures (no light upwards if bulb is facing down).

      For the globes linked:

      5W - 350 lumen
      7.5W - 600 lumen
      9.5W - 806 lumen
      12.5W - 1055 lumen

for 35W GU10 halogens, you'd probably be looking at 300-400 lumen.

      • Thanks KentT.

Any idea where I can get GU10 Philips LED especially the cool daylight one?

        • No idea, sorry. I stopped looking for GU10s when I found these:

          http://www.bunnings.co.nz/click-led-bulb-gu10-5w-silver-4pk_…

4000K, 330 lumen, wide 100 degree beam, cheap and readily available.

In my opinion 4000K is the sweet spot for colour. Not yellow, not blue - just white.

EDIT: That's a bunnings NZ link but my local Bunnings had them last I checked - but they're not on the website.

      • "In the case of proper brands the "equivalent to" will be fairly accurate"

Um OK, sure, I'll just ignore 75 years of the industry as a whole duping customers with inaccurate lumen measurements and rely on my eyes which are simply hopeless at determining lumen levels because we cannot gauge absolute values very well at all.

        Nothing could go wrong.

  • I thought the Philips globes were the ones that have warnings on the box that they will overheat if used in enclosed fixtures?

    • Never use LED in enclosed fixtures. CFL will not last long either.

      • what's the reasoning behind that? They produce very little heat, etc.

        • +1

          Maybe a general rule?

I've used CFLs and LEDs in enclosed fittings for years and never had any reduced life spans as opposed to ones in open fittings.

        • +1

I suppose I should say "small" enclosed fittings.
Overheating can eventually cause damage, and LEDs become less efficient the hotter the emitter gets.
Enclosures designed for incandescent can get too hot for efficient operation, even though the power used is much less.

  • Thanks OP, been looking for a deal for the 12.5W ones.

  • what are good about this LED?
i need very bright bulb, not really care much but i just need my living room to be bright.

    • +1

12.5W will be very bright for these. I am the same, I don't like a dimly lit room and was happy with the output of these globes.

    • Yep the 12.5w are fantastic - very bright and a nice crisp warm white light, not too yellowy, but not stone cold white either.

You'll be very happy with these

Make sure to get Warm White (WW)

      • which one you recommend?
        WW = warm white
        CDL = cool daylight

        • +1

Definitely Warm White. Their warm white is more white than yellow anyway. A nice clean light.

I really dislike Cool Daylight at the best of times - it looks so clinical, like a dentist.

        • @placard: cool. thanks now need to wait till i got home and count how many edison type or the other type i need. hopefully not sold out lol

    • Philips also produce a 14W version which Dick Smith doesn't seem to stock:
      http://www.philips.com.au/c-p/6923410747539/led-bulb

It is larger than traditional light bulbs though.

  • +1

Can you say the 12.5w is like 100w or is it really 75w equivalent? Very hard to find higher than 12.5w.

    • +1

I'd say they are being conservative, I find it very bright…you can get a slightly brighter one at Bunnings from Philips but it's $20 or so.

      • Thanks. If it similar to 100w then I will buy the 12.5w, I don't want brighter than 100w. So you think it is close to 100w?

        • placard is saying that, in his/her opinion, it is similar to 100W or even a bit brighter.

        • @jdr:

No I'd say it's close to 100w or just under…it won't be too bright (ie over 100w equivalent).

I mean they are being conservative saying it's equivalent to 75w…

        • @placard: Thanks. Unfortunate the strongest they have is PHILIPS LED 9W CDL BC. The other is Warm light. At least now I know I can use 12.5w.

        • @naira:

Sorry I don't understand? You want cool daylight or warm white? To be honest, I hate cool daylight and prefer warm white - in this Philips the warm white is actually more white than yellow anyway.

          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/PHILIPS-LED-12-5W-WW-BC-/25187667… Warm White

        • @placard: I wanted the Flourescent color light and don't like the warm light. I might give the Philips WW a try then.

    • When checking how bright lights you should check the lumens (lm), which is the measure of brightness, not the wattage. All light have a lumens measurement on them these days. For example the 5W one linked is 350lm.

Because all lights are different in terms of efficiency watts has a non-direct relationship to brightness.

But in terms of a rough guide of old lights watts to lumens you want:

      100W - You want 1600lm
      75W - You want 1100lm
      60W - You want 800lm

That 12.5W prodcues 1055lm which is close to an old 75W light.

Also I would recommend Warm Light as cool one give that sickly blue tinge to things, which I hate.

      http://energy.gov/energysaver/articles/lumens-and-lighting-f…

    • 75W. Please check the picture on the listing.

  • +2

Does anyone here know the physical sizes of these globes.

I think that higher wattages ones are a lot bigger in the Philips range compared to Osram…

Hard to tell from the pics…

  • Bought 20 WW 12.w ES, thanks.

  • Everytime I try to look up a store for click and collect, it times out…

  • Thanks OP.
I'm pretty sure this is the cheapest Philips bulbs I've eva got.

    • A deal posted here 7 months ago was cheaper and allowed you to price match at Masters making it even cheaper.. I remember paying ~$3.70 for the 5W and $5 for the 8W

    LED ROI Savings Calculator:
    http://www.livingled.com/LED-ROI-Savings-Calculator.html

I did a quick calc and based on replacing my 5 most used 60W lights with the 12.5W LED lights and at a very conservitive 5 hours per day the ROI would only be 3.4 months and from then on I would save about $13 a month ($158 per year).

I'm not sure it would be worth replacing things like pantry lights or spare rooms which might only be on for a maximum of 10mins a day. But replacing your most used lights is almost a no brainer.

    • Exactly right! :)

    • you forgot the life time, the 60W you mentioned can be burn anytime especially with old switch. cfl/led is much more durable and that save lots of time for bulb replacement.

  • remove the plastic caps and get a better light distribution and lm :)

    • Really? Can you do this? Is it hard?

I'd love to remove them and get more than a half sphere of light!

What's the purpose of the plastic caps?

      • yeah the plastic top half of the cover pops right off and can righ tback on…

purpose being so that the bright lmns doesnt hit ya eye…

        • Ah k, for some reason I thought you meant the side plastic, but you just mean the area that the light normally glows out of - that pieces of plastic removes, showing the individual LEDs…

        • Nice to know. Thanks.
Might be a good idea depending on the application.. The caps would/should help diffuse the light.

  • I'm using those old transformer and 50w bulbs.
Does anyone know if this Philip LED downlights will simply replace my current 50W ones? Is it as simple as that or will I need to change the transformers?

    • From my basic understanding, most globes will work with existing transformers. Sometimes you get some combinations of transformers and globes that won't work together but it's rare.

I think you might get marginally better efficiency from changing transformers, but might not be worth the hassle.

Going from 50w down to 5.5w will save you a lot on electricity, especially if you have these globes on for long periods - ie living areas.

      • Thanks for that. Reason Im asking is because:

        1) There are plenty of companies out there that charge uite a bit to "convert you system" from halagen to LED. they'll change the transformers, circuits, etc. So… I'm thinking, if it is as simple as changing the bulbs, why are these companies charging 1000s of dollars for these Halogen to LED conversion jobs.

        2) I've bought the LED halogen (cant remember the brand, but it wasn't Philips) for my previous apartment (which was a newer builder), but they did not work. They blinked a few times when switched on and then goes off.

        • Argh… No longer available online.

    • someone told me if the transformer is not suitable for LED then the LED will not last long, you better ask in shop for more detail.

    • I did not need to change my old halogen transformer and it works perfectly. Brighter light, less heat.

  • PHILIPS LED 5.5W WW MR16 60D (4 pack) $26.81 SOLD OUT :( i couldn't buy any )

  • PHILIPS LED 5.5W WW MR16 60D $8.02 - SOLD OUT

  • Everything sold out now — This sale was super quick.. i couldn't even buy a single glob lol

  • all gone all ozbargained

  • Whaa.. Gone in less than 2 hours :(

By the way, I had this kind of light fitting. I don't think replacing the bulb to LED will do any good, as the light will go sideways instead of down.
    http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1372/5164476071_88f26e1206_o.…

Something like this probably is more effective than standard led bulb
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/102-LEDs-6W-F5-Light-Bulb-110-220…

    • My bathroom light has a ceiling light which has a sideways globe like this. Yes it does have the light predominantly on one side of the glass shade, but it doesn't really effect anything - after a while I don't notice the lopsided illumination of the glass cover.

In terms of those ebay globes - they will be rubbish compared to the Philips - awful CRI no doubt (greenish) and very dim compared - they often exaggerate the lumens output by a great deal!

    • i got the same fitting in my living room too!
the question is if those from ebay are as good as phillips.

      • +1

I'm definitely wouldn't buy those led from ebay.
It's just an example as I can't find good manufacturer that make that kind of bulb.

  • For those who missed out, dick smith website still has them, e.g. 12.5W for $13.7. Plus you can use MIDWEEK25 for $25 off if buying over $100. Also can use gift card purchased from discounted woolworth egiftcard.

    • sold out there too!

      • I just checked they are still there. Search philips led, and there are stores that sold out certain stocks, but delivery is available. Still better buy from elsewhere.

  • +2

guys, if you are buying in bulk, DSE's main site has a $25 off $100 spend. Bought 10 9w LEDs for $80 after discount, not as good a deal, but close.
oh, just realised was beaten to this… sorry!

  • I bought some 6 watt led lights (ES) - pack of 2 for $10 at Bunnings (Dandenong Store) near the registers … not the brightest lights but consider cost not bad…. Individual prices around $5.50 ….

    • Looks like these?

      http://www.bunnings.com.au/osram-4w-bc-led-star-classic-a-sh…

Yeah they would only be good for bedside lamps at 250 lumens…compared to the 12.5w Philips which is a great room light at 1055 lumens - ie kitchen/dining.

For lounge room - 800lumens is probably ideal.

      • Similar but different - The $10 for 2 is Click branded which the website does not have listed…

      • I wonder if possible to find ES producing less than 250lm? I've got an application where I'd prefer to dim a bit current 4W / 250lm.

        • Get yourself a dimmable globe.

        • That would mean changing the light switch (x2), i.e. electrical work.

        • @oj4rec: Aldi have dimmable globes that you can dim without dimmers. Flip the switch twice to get 30% light.

        • @zealmax: Thanks, will check it out.

  • +1

Damn, the 12.5W and 9.5W are very bright.

    • Is this a problem? I actually like these LED Philips globes for this reason - you actually get true brightness, not overstated claims of brightness and some pathetic half dim light that you end up peering in all the time :)

For kitchen/dining/bathrooms I like the light bright, bedrooms and loungerooms can be more dim - although my main room loungeroom lights are bright in case I want bright light, then when I want it dimmer, I have a few lamps that I use instead to provide soft light, not coming from the ceiling.

      • Not a problem. I was just surprised by the brightness. And I agree it is a very nice bright colour.

  • looking for something close to 100W (1600lm) but philips dont have it
    any recommendation?

I've only seen Bunnings stock this - website only has Warm White and BC connection, but check to see if in store has more.

It says 14w = 1600L =90w. But in my experience of the 12.5w/1055L one - is already very bright, so this one will be more than enough I think for you.

  • +1

has anyone actually collected their globes from DS?

    • I collected mine about 3 hours after ordering. From Sydney Westfield store.

      • Same, I got the text message about 2 hours after ordering saying it was ready to collect. I collect them on Wednesday!

        • My order said it would be available on Saturday, but on Monday I got a call that the store never had any stock and there is no stock within a 20km radius.

        • @matt_will_fix_it:

I just got my sms to say its ready for click and collect. Took a while :)
