  I used to take out travel insurance when traveling OS until the Australian Consumers Association (later published in Choice) examined the basic overseas policies and compared them with the the free travel insurance you get when buying your airfares on a gold or platinum card credit card (which is issued by Zurich Insurance).

  The findings indicated that "free" policy was comparable in all respects to a standard paid policy.

    Except not everyone is eligible for Gold and Platinimum cards. Some might not even have it. For me, I use TID's subsidiary snowinsurance to cover skiing/snowboarding holidays that aren't covered by my Gold Visa. Not only that, most of my airfares are under $900 these days, which means I'm not covered by GOLD/Platinum policy.

    So yes, some Gold/Platinum cover may be good but its certainly not readily available to most people.

  Agree with ash2000 re the attractiveness of the free gold/platinum card travel insurance — but you do need to check the terms and conditions. For example, I purchased flights through frequent flyers points so effectively didn't pay for them with the gold card => no free coverage. So this discount is useful to me!
