Unisurf 8" Win8.1 16GB Tablet + Office 365 + 8GB MicroSD - $83 (after $70 Voucher/Cashback) @ Harvey Norman

760

Here's what you get:

Unisurf 8" Windows 8.1 16GB Tablet (Free upgrade to Windows 10)
MS Office 365 1yr subscription
1TB OneDrive Storgage
8GB Micro SD Card
Trend Micro Mobile Security for Android 12Mth

First of all let me credit martyn for the original 7" deal, MJD682 for the Trend Micro deal and brucefromaustralia for putting them together in the 7" deal thread.

I created this deal because: A) bruce's hack was hidden in the comments, and B) there were a lot of complaints in the 7" deal about screen quality and inability to power the device without losing the USB port. This device has neither of those problems.

This deal also contains a further hack for those with an eligible Amex who purchase two tablets, to get the price down by another $25 per tablet.

So with that out of the way, here's the deal:

This deal requires a small amount of work and a combination of deals, but it's a cheap price for a half decent tablet (with a much better screen than the 7" Unisurf).

First thing, you need to sign up to the Harvey Norman newsletter to get the $25 welcome voucher. If you've done this previously, just do it again with a different email address.

Second, you need to spend over $150 to get the voucher to work - unfortunately this tablet is only $133. Not to worry - we're going to combine it with this deal: "Trend Micro Mobile Security for Android 12Mth + 8GB Micro Memory Card $0 (after $20 Cashback) Harvey Norman" https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/197230.

That should push your total up to $153 and validate your voucher.

The final shopping cart total should be $128. With the Trend Micro Cashback ($20) and the Microsoft Cashback ($25), the final cost should be $83, which is more than a bargain for what you get.

Shipping costs will vary, but in-store pickup is free and fast (I ordered online at the store and popped off for a haircut and grocery shop and it was ready to collect by the time I was done)

With regards to the tablet, it seems like a reasonably decent product. Pretty snappy, OK screen (better than the 7", but not iPad/Samsung level), OK battery (haven't tested fully yet), solid build quality, but nothing flash. All in all, decent bang for buck - just don't expect the tablet to have the quality of an iPad or the power of a Surface Pro.

Just as a further note, if you buy two and have an Amex card, you can get a further $50 cashback:

https://network.americanexpress.com/connect/au/en/doe_offer_…

That would bring the price down to $57 each.

FYI: You would need to create two HN accounts, and make two trasactions to make this work. And you would also need to buy more Trend Micro packs to push it over $300.

Kudos for the effort you've put into the deal :)

No worries. I picked up on the Trend Micro tip in the 7" deal comments, but I don't think anyone had looked at combining it with the 8" Tablet. I thought that since most of the comments there were about how bad the screen was, some people might be interested in paying a bit more here for a better screen.

      • it got wifi?

      • For those still negging, here's my hack from 9 days ago. Compare with this new deal. Substitute the 8" in place of the (7" + $12+ other purchase + 1 Trend) to get this deal! (Only 3 Trend per order. Works buying anything around that price, like an 8"!)

Listing a deal without attributing the work to those who developed it, including a link to the 7" deal, helps no one.

        Decided to buy at $28.
Combined with Trend Micro Mobile Security for Android 12Mth + 8GB Micro Memory Card $0 (after $20 Cashback) & $25 welcome credit.

Local store has plenty of tablets but only 3 Trends. Some other stores may be the reverse. So topped up order with some coffee I like to total $150.95.

        Less cash backs & discount
        $25 welcome discount
        $25 on 365 registration
        $60 on 3 Trend registration

        So $40.95 for
        $28 tablet
$12.95 Lavazza Divinamente Coffee Capsules (rarely on special, for my $6 machine)
        & 3 free 8GB cards

        I can live with that.
But tablet & 4 free 8GB cards for $28 would have been better.

    • +4

Considering it's a copy of my hack to get the 7" Unisurf for $28 from 9 days ago, but buying the 8"!

Thanks for the lack of credit, dontpanic. That's standard practice here to credit others work that led to your deal.

And I'm getting negged for my work that created this deal!
      Really?

      • +1

Hugs. It's a miserable wet morning here, I just had water seep in through my shoe and soak my sock… I know just how you feel.

      • +21
      • yeeesh… take a chill pill dude…

      • -4

Kudos for the effort you've put into the deal :)

I had posted about the $28 7" process many times throughout the 7" deal, so people would not miss it. The OP simply changed the tablet to an 8".

I picked up on the Trend Micro tip in the 7" deal comments

The OP didn't even have the decency to upvote my idea, but bases a deal on it.

I am glad that someone took up the idea, but acknowledgement in deal description of the previously posted hack as well as a link to the 7" deal it relies on is a basic process on OzBargain.

        • Cheer up Brucey. It's Friday!

        • @muncan:
Haven't I told you not to call me Brucey ;-)
My Hulk impression doesn't work in text. Now there was Bruce you didn't want to piss off ;-)

        • -1

          @muncan:
Damn, my newly installed Trend Micro Security won't let me view that site(Edit: on Android phone). I am not joking. I'll demand my $20 back :-)

        • @brucefromaustralia: you can't be too careful opening text files on a Windows device

        • +1

Sorry Bruce, I didn't mean to offend, nor steal (is that even a thing here? I thought this site was all about sharing…). I merely thought people might be interested in the deal on the 8" because so many people were complaining about the screen on the 7" and your tip was hidden away amongst the comments. Again, apologies.

        • I appreciate that you have posted this hack before and I agree that others who have contributed should be acknowledged. But it is impossible for every one who posts a deal to go through each and every comment in other posts to see whether it has been posted by someone else and acknowledge (mainly time wise impossible). Given that this is OP's first post and his/her effort in putting it together and sharing their finding (see below OP's comment), you could have pointed this out, rather than blaming him/her.

        • +1

          more negs :-(
I'm very tired of being criticised for helping.

        • @brucefromaustralia:
Please don't. Keep contributing and keep happy!

        • @erwinsie:

          The OP stated they…
I picked up on the Trend Micro tip in the 7" deal comments but did not acknowledge that comment - my contribution, used the same hack for this deal, & did not even think my comment was worthy of an upvote.

      • I have upvoted you Bruce and think you are right. OP could have mentioned that.

        • Thanks. I think it's great OP posted it as a deal.

But should contain link to 7" deal - so people can decide if they really want a tablet like this, and don't take someone else's work with out acknowledgement.

I have complained about the issue when others work was appropriated. Sharing & building on others work is normal here. Not much use without it. It's always nice someone read your comment.

I have the $28 7" & wouldn't recommend it. From a comment in the 7" deal, the advantage of the 8" is far better screen resolution & separate power input, leaving the micro-USB free for data - a major drawback with the 7".

        • @brucefromaustralia: I would say it is about ethics, if you copied it from somewhere, give credits. I will wait for OP to update the post or comment.

        • @Gaggy:
This deal relied on the unlinked $25 off $150 HN deal, the unlinked 7" deal & my comment - which relied on the 7" deal it was posted in & the TREND deal I linked to in that comment, that TREND deal had to add kudos to TREND link originally posted in a HN deal description…
Kudos all the way down, except this deal.

Showing appreciation take a very little effort.

I decided not to post as a new deal, as the quality of these tablets is not good.

        • +3

          @brucefromaustralia:

It actually took a great deal of effort to post all this. I didn't just copy paste, and you'll see in the comments I acknowledged I got help from other sources. I apologise that I didn't directly credit you, but to be honest, it was the early hours of the morning and I was busy packing for an overseas trip. I didn't have time to go trawling through the site to find every last deal that may have been posted to link back to. I isn't even know the Amex deal had been posted here. I found that on my own, but whatever… This was my first post here, and thanks to your unrelenting negativity (I mean really, you've been all over this thread talking it down), it will probably be my last.

        • +1

@dontpanic: Dont Panic m8. You did a good job. Have a safe overseas trip…

        • @mady123:

          Thanks mate.

        • @dontpanic: Good effort. Thanks for sharing.

        • @dontpanic:
The fact that you failed to simply attribute credit in the deal description as is normal on OzBargain, after so many hours… that's why I am complaining.

thanks to your unrelenting negativity (I mean really, you've been all over this thread talking it down), it will probably be my last.

You were simply asked to do the right thing. Still refusing to that is not very nice.

You have been around OzBargain long enough to know how things work.

I am tired of the grab what I can from others attitude on OzBargain. Of the unfounded personal attacks, the negative comments when I make factual comments.

So this is my last post. I've tidied up my major contribution here Telstra Starter Pack Wiki which others will continue.

The negatives far outweigh the positives of remaining a member.
          Goodbye.

        • @DisabledUser58047:

I never refused to fix the post. Quite the opposite. I fixed it at first opportunity.

      • -1

There is a difference between sharing (great) & taking someone else's work as your own - plagiarism (bad).

Attributing others is easy helps, & gets you off the hook!

I think it was worth posting as a deal, with attribution & links, but the tablet may not be worth the effort.

  • Thanks. Just ordered one. will compare it with 7" inch one that i picked up from previous deal.

Found Unisurf 8 Manual as well
    http://unisurf.com.au/pdf/Unisurf-8-Win.pdf

    • +2

Yeah, they didn't have the 7" or 8" on display in the store I was at, so I couldn't do a direct comparison, but from my experience with other cheap 7" devices, I can say this one is a lot better. Not amazing, but not bad. Viewing angles are acceptable (where others are shocking) and brightness and resolution are as to be expected at this price point. This panel is IPS, where the 7" models don't specify. It's also 1280x800, whereas the 7" is 1024x600.

I'm basically using it for media consumption whilst travelling. But it has the added bonus of the full Windows 8.1 experience (no stupid RT), with HDMI output. These feature made it an easy choice over the cheap Android competitors. So far I'm quite impressed with Windows 8.1 (I come from Android and OSX) - just needs more tablet App support…

      • +1

Can you please confirm that does it support charging + usb mouse/keyboard simultaneously???

        • +1

It charges via an AC power port, so you are free to use the USB port for mouse/keyboard/whatever via the included USB OTG cable.

        • @dontpanic: so I can't charge this with my phone micro usb cable plug into usb port?

        • @erwinsie:

I haven't found a way yet. Though you may be able to find some sort of converter cable. I think I have one with an external battery pack somewhere…

    • +1

      You need two tablets?

  • 1GB ram kills it for me, but props to OP for the ingenuity!

    • +2

It's actually not that bad. I mean, you shouldn't be using these devices for much more than media consumption, browsing and the odd Word document. You probably wouldn't want to do too much multitasking, but for light use, it seems to do the job.

Of course, I've only had it for half a day…

      • 1 tab in Chrome takes more than 1GB haha

    • +1

It's windows…not Android..which can be very unpleasant handling RAM.

  • Just as a further note, if you buy two and have an Amex card, you can get a further $50 cashback:

    https://network.americanexpress.com/connect/au/en/doe_offer_…

That would bring the price down to $57 each.

    • +2

      isn't it $70.5 ea.?

      • It would be a further $25 off each device. $83-$25=$58.

So my maths was a little off… sorry guys. I dudded you a dollar.

        • edit: my bad…thanks

        • +1

$25 welcome voucher can only be applied once, so it should be $70.50 each.

        • sorry im confuse here. how ? i got $70.50 on my calcl using amex and one welcome note
2x tablet 2x antivirus then apply welcome code endup $281
          antivirus will give $40
          ms will give $50
          amex will give $50
end up $141 for two, each $70.50?

        • @m2thez:

You can apply it twice if you go through the process of creating two HN accounts and pay for both transactions with your Amex. I don't think the Amex $300 spend has to be in one transaction.

        • @dontpanic:
true you can combine multiple transaction with amex, but one you buy one then total become $153-25=128, and do this twice will be under $300 to qualify from amex

        • +1

          @erwinsie:

True. You'd have to chuck something else in then. Another trend micro or two should do the trick.

  • (Free upgrade to Windows 10)

Do you have it on authority that the Win 10 upgrade will work on this model?

    • +2

No, just what the store guy said - take it with a grain of salt.

        • That doesn't mean it will actually work. Especially if the OEM provides no drivers or recovery media.
I made a recovery drive for the Unisurf 7", and it boots but has no recovery option.

        • @manic: I don't believe Microsoft has ever guaranteed Windows to work

        • 8" and up tablets get Win10

Did you actually read that article?

        • @McFly: Yes, did you?

You must have at least 8 inches for Windows 10 to go all the way

This week he tweeted that only slabs at least 8in in size can run the Windows 10 operating system in desktop mode and use normal 32-bit Windows applications.

          8" & up = "desktop" w/ win32 apps. < 8" = phones, phablets, sm tablets. No dsktp.

        • As long i know win 10 CAN works with this im happy, i can just buy original legit copy of win 10 later this year when they hit the store, no need free upgrade.

        • -1

@MrFunSocks: And you still can't see how the article doesn't say that? And, as others have said, there is no guarantee that 10 will work on this.

        • @erwinsie: Wait, you want to pay for something that's free?! I think you're on the wrong site…

        • @McFly: Tablets 8" and up will get Windoes 10. This is 8". Pretty simple.

        • @MrFunSocks:maybe what he meant is, getting the update doesn't mean able to run it, maybe he thinks this cheapo unbranded low spec china knock off tablet is not powerful enough? I'm not sure myself.

        • -1

          @MrFunSocks: Try re-reading your link.

        • @McFly: Nope. If you see something there that says other than what they plainly and clearly state, which is that 8" and up tablets will get Win10 then go ahead and say it.

        • @MrFunSocks: You really need to work on those comprehension skills.
          Eg.:

Folks asking about updating 7" existing devices to Win10 — you keep your desktop, you get continuum. Go try it yourself now! :)

        • @McFly: That's great mate, but this tablet is 8"…..lol

Who needs to work on their comprehension skills?

        • I give up.

        • @McFly: No come on, I want to see what you think it supposedly says about 8" tablets not getting Windows 10.

Seems to me like you saw that you are wrong so are trying to sneak out without admitting it.

Here's another article stating exactly what I'm saying: http://www.techradar.com/au/news/mobile-computing/tablets/sa…

        • @MrFunSocks:
Now I'm 'wrong' because I 'think' it says 8" tabs won't get Win 10.
I don't think it says that because I know they do, and therefore would not say such a thing either.

Here's another article stating exactly what I'm saying

lol Seriously? 'Exactly' what you're saying? Hint: What is the title of that article?

Anyway, you (first) said 8" and up tablets get Win10 and that was in response to Do you have it on authority that the Win 10 upgrade will work on this model?

You were answering a different question. Comprehension skills off from the start…

        • @McFly: Youre seriously dense mate lol.

Someone asks if it's guaranteed to get Win 10, I say yes and provide a link showing why it will, and then you go off on cryptic passive aggressive messages about me being wrong.

It's a win 8.1 tablet with an 8" screen - it gets Win 10. If you think that I answered a different question to what was asked then you are the one who needs to brush up on his comprehension skills mate.

        • @MrFunSocks: OK OK you got me.
Your articles prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that Win 10 will work on this tablet.

          ROFLMAO

        • @McFly: It proves that it will get Windows 10. How well it will work is anybodies guess, as no version of Windows has ever been guaranteed to work 100% on any hardware that it wasn't sold on from an OEM.

The Win 10 upgrade will work, like the links I posted show. Will the OS function 100% on it? Don't know, Win10 isn't out yet. As far as anyones best guess, the answer is yes since it is already running the full version of Win 8.1, which will actually most likely have higher recommended specs than Win 10.

Again - quit the passive aggressive bullshit and learn to read.

        • @MrFunSocks: Wow, you're quite amazing.

    • See detailed discussion & problems in original 7" deal.

  • I think the bit about $57 need confirmation, welcome discount can be applied for each two items?

    • +1

I don't think he is talking about using the welcome voucher twice. They are talking about the Amex $50 off deal.
Two units therefore take $25 off each to balance the calculations.

    • +1

      See my edited deal.

      • thank you =- i should not panic too soon

  • Is the battery any good? Heading away in a few months and this could be cheaper then a portable DVD player for my little one.

  • Ok anyone want to share if I use amex? Sydney cbd only preferable near Wynyard

    • +1

      hi erwinsie, I want one

      • +2

        pairing up with hairprazz

  • I don't need them, but bought 2 7" ones last round because of the excitement among this community.

Disappointed with speed, brightness, and size of texts.

One of them has problem with connecting to wifi networks. Brought back and the tech at HN Sunshine said that it connected fine there. Brought it home, problem persist. Waste of money.

    • The rewiews on this one look no better

    • I haven't had any problems with my 7" apart from the crappy screen.

  • +3

Note the problems with the 7" like WiFi issues, returned stock being supplied, etc. Expect similar issues.

    • Definitely get what you paid for.
      Maybe it's driver-related issues.

      • See the response from Unisurf.

    • It's only early days, but I'm happy with the product. For $83/57 who can really complain…

Of course, you need to be realistic about what it can do. If you think you're running Photoshop on here, your kidding yourself.

  • The "Trend Micro Mobile Security for Android 12Mth + 8GB Micro Memory Card $0 (after $20 Cashback) Harvey Norman" deal seems to be out of stock as the whole page is removed from their site, so this deal isn't possible anymore (at least not with that $0 after cashback item).

    • It's here

    • +2

Saw stock last night for $20 on the shelves at my local HN.

  • If you don't have a bluetooth wireless mouse and keyboard, get a set. Windows 8.1 touch interface is terrible to use on small screens, the icons are way too small to accurately tap on.

  • does this screen also suffers from ghost shadow effects when vewing it in portrait mode? coz the 7" screen is a shocker!

    • Not that I'm aware of. Looks the same in portrait as it does in landscape. This is a different screen to the 7". It's an IPS panel 1280x800.

  • Deleted.

  • Anyone have amex want to split? In Syd cbd…

  • Luck they gave me a used Unisurf 7". I returned tablet + 3 Trend + thermometer = 125 and got a refund on a different card. Now bought the Unisurf 8 + few Trend to bring it up to $300. Brings the tablet to $33…

  • anyone found this kind of keyboard case locally? it can attach/interface by the magnetic connector so usb port/bluetooth is not required

    http://aud.dx.com/product/81-key-keyboard-w-case-touch-panel…

i know this is 10" but might be compatible with 8"

i had searched through ebay and staticice but cant find much locally. Just want to buy one fast so dont have to wait for weeks if order from dx.com
