  • I'm curious in what situation do people have a need to use these that they don't have mains or 12v to recharge with?

Travelling, running a GPS on your phone for hours, powering a Raspberry Pi outdoors…

    • Planes, trains, buses, hot air balloons, blimps, uni cycles, bicycles, tricycles, quad cycles, doctors office, dentists office, psychiatrist offices, psychiatric hospitals, prisons, psychiatric penal facilities etc etc..

All of these places are a lot easier to endure if you got some juice for your devices.

I forget to charge my phone sometimes, so with this I can charge it when I'm on the bus.

    • Great insight!

Hmmm, I believe that according to Xiaomi this is the old model and the new model is the 10,000 mAH unit.
It's substantially cheaper at gearbest.com, but I'd rather buy from banggood.com who should price match it.
Same for all the Xiaomi products, they are cheap as chips at GB and BG is a better option due to reputation.

The copy power banks tend to be made poorly and have cheap batteries in them - I'd rather pay the extra 30% for major brands that deliver the capacity you expect. Also the real Xiaomi units can be charged while they charge a phone (excess charge goes to the batteries), copies generally can't do that.

    • GB and BG is a better option due to reputation.

So far both have proved to have less than stellar shipping reputation. It would be nice to have one of these Chinese retailers ship in 2-3 weeks instead of the 5 weeks or more that some users are reporting.

      • I regularly buy items from China/HK and using China Post or HK Post tends to take no less than 3 weeks, often 5-6 weeks.
I was more referring to what I've read about GB earning a reputation for poor customer service, shipping used gear at times and cancelling orders to avoid the discounts in a promotion etc.
I have used Buyincoins, Focalprice & TomTop for years, they are reliable and honest, pity the same can't be said for many of them - EverBuying is one that springs to mind who need to be avoided like the plague.

  • Hi Rep, any chance of a deal on the 16000mAh version?

    • Of course~ I will apply for it~

  • I have a question that I'm sure some clever clogs out there will be able to answer in a heart-beat, but which would probably take me quite some time to get a definitive answer on via Google etc (because I don't know much about electricity). Apologies in advance if it seems like a silly question for some reason.

AAAnyways, some poor woman was electrocuted a year or so ago in Australia, via her phone (or was it a tablet?) that she was using while it was plugged into the mains. She was attached to the device via headphones if I remember rightly (which may have contributed to her death because it was not a matter of simply 'dropping' the device before she was shocked to death), but the bottom line is she died because she was attached to a device while it was plugged in to the mains, and either the device or the cord malfunctioned.

Based on this, I never let my 2-year-old son use any device while it's attached to the mains charging. He loves to watch You-Tube vids on his mum's phone or on a tablet, but if they're out of charge, he's out of luck because of this rule I have. So my question is, would it be completely safe to let him use a device that was attached to one of these 10400 mAh power banks; i.e. in the event that the device, the power-bank or the cord connecting the two completely malfunctioned somehow, would he still be fine? I'm assuming that he would, but I want to get that confirmed by someone in the know before I go ahead and buy one.

TLDR: If one of these powerbanks malfunctioned and unloaded all of its stored power on a small child holding it or attached to it via a cord, could it injure the child?

In theory it is only 5V (the batteries may provide 7.2V internally which gets converted to 5V). In either case this is not enough to penetrate the human skin and hence (in theory) it should not be able to cause any damage.

On the other hand mains voltage (220-240V) is more than enough to penetrate skin and kill you.

      • I guess what I'm asking is what would happen if it completely malfunctioned and 'delivered' all of its stored power to a (very small) person holding it? Does it store enough 'total power' to injure a small child? I'm sure I'm not asking the question clearly, because I don't know enough about the subject to phrase it properly…

Human skin has certain impedance. Your killer-supply will need to have certain voltage before it penetrates skin to do damage. This battery pack is only 5V (or 7.2V) which, under normal circumstances should be harmless, similar to touching pins on your USB connector in your computer.

          From Wikipedia:
"It is sometimes suggested that human lethality is most common with alternating current at 100–250 volts; however, death has occurred below this range, with supplies as low as 42 volts."

5V is way less than 42V.

Also consider that your phone/ipad already has a similar battery. This one would be as dangerous as the battery that is already in your device.

So, if you want to trust an advice from a stranger on the Internet, get this and don't worry. It is harmless.

And no, I would not use a mains charger, as you already suggested. Especially not with cheap knock-off chargers!!!

        • @luka:
Thanks a lot for your patience/responses luka, they're genuinely much appreciated. Do I understand you correctly that any battery is simply physically incapable of 'unloading' all of its stored power all at once in a concentrated 'jolt'? I.e. even if it completely malfunctions, can it only actually deliver a shock that is equal to (but not greater than) the voltage that it is designed to deliver to devices? If that is so I guess it explains why no one has ever been electrocuted by their mobile phone (except when it's been plugged in to the mains, and they've been electrocuted by the mains power, via the phone).

  • I recently moved and forgot to update my address in Paypal. Ordered this and Paypal gave my old address!! Yeah, I know I should have spotted and changed it.

Anyway, I have been trying to explain via their online chat that I need the address changing and I am now banging my head against the wall. Anyway, I had to cancel the order and was asked to reorder, using my new address.

I soon realised that I really don't need another power bank.

    Refund in 3-4 days!!!!
