  • Clearing stock for Googles own (still HTC manufactured) phone. Still an awesome price but!

    • -1

I think Nexus One is a different platform to the Magic.
And Google is supposed to be selling it direct to the public.. ie not through network owners.

      • it's still android only a newer version (2.1 Flan)

you can probably upgrade the magic to 2.1 when it comes out

        • As far as I'm aware, only Motorola have allowed users to upgrade to the latest Android.
You may be able to compile your own version if you have the skills but for the majority there will be minimal software upgrades.

The Magic hardware has mixed reviews too.

      • Only a rumor…Google has had dev phones before I believe which ended up becoming HTC branded phones (G1 possibly, I forget which model it was). Anyway the other rumor is that it will again ship as an HTC device and the whole Nexus thing is just so google employees have a standard handset for development with given the handsets they have currently are a bit behind the curve.

In all honesty I see this as being more liky…Not sure if Google would want to firstly compete with its partners in the hardware space or secondly even go to the trouble of launching and supporting a hardware device given they are a software/services company.

        • I think they're doing this to somewhat stabilise the Android market. All the different manufacturers use different versions of Android. Like Droid uses version 2, where HTC is still on Cupcake (1.5). They keep saying they'll just release 2.1, but don't know when that will be. And a lot of handsets are in Donut (1.6).

So I read this article that said that Google is somewhat trying to stabilise this with their own handset so manufacturers will have like an incentive to upgrading their own handsets as well.

          • @ragflan: Andriod 2.0 is available for this phone through Xda-dev
            http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=493

I was under the impression that Google has a spec sheet which had to be met or exceeded in regards to screen regulation, ram, cpu etc before they were allowed to market an Andriod product, so that all software and OS versions were future proofed.

        • "Only a rumor"
WRONG. Been confirmed by Google, not Google employees, GOOGLE.

      • "I think Nexus One is a different platform to the Magic."
        WRONG.

"And Google is supposed to be selling it direct to the public.. ie not through network owners."
No reason why it won't also be sold by carriers on plans as well.

        • The hardware of the Nexus One IS different to the Magic!
          Not wrong
The Software is not of course (apart from versions)

But in my opinion a Platform is what the software is built upon. It is not the Software.

          • @ESEMCE: "The hardware of the Nexus One IS different to the Magic!
            Not wrong
The Software is not of course (apart from versions)"
You said it was a different "platform". Platform means a different OS and not hardware.

            • @PainToad: Google "define platform" and get back to me on that then..

Hardware is a Platform… always was, always will be.
(An OS can also be a platform.. as I've previously recognised)

        • True, but unlike most phones it wont be locked to a network carrier.

  • Annoying that this phone isn't MegaG compatible, BUT I wonder if 3 users can now jump on to Vodafone's 900MHz regional 3G network which would more than make up for it?

    • not yet…

    • Wish I had a dollar for everytime someone asked that dam question.

    • Mega 3G (aka Roaming 3g) is pointless for most people anyway, 50cents per meg is ridiculous, i would only want to use it in an emergency, though in that case GPRS would do anyway. When it's included in x-series cap it would be useful.

At least its easy for me to tell when roaming on my WinMo 6 phone by seeing if its 3g or E (you have to manually check to see the network provider), if it always said 3g it wouldn't be so easy to see if its roaming or not.

      • Not if the primary purpose of your phone is for the apparently "unusual" purpose of calling someone!

MegaG is very handy in that case, when you travel outside the inner metro areas of Australia, but you're right.. noone ever uses their phone for calls! :-)

        • So what does roaming on 3g get you instead of roaming on 2g ?

  • Only 6 months ago this phone was free on the $69 cap… Guess 3 overpriced at the start, but great price now!

    • 6 months is a fair amount of time in the industry.

  • I hope 3 or some network in Australia plans on providing Android handsets like Motorola Droid or the future ones like Sony Xperia X10.But, anyway. This is a good deal.

I signed on for a new contract like 8 months ago and got the Nokia E71 with 3. At that time I knew nothing of Android. Now I'm seriously regretting getting E71 especially on the 49 cap. I should have waited and gotten the Dream or Magic.

Also, does anyone know if there's any way around the contract termination or like minimising charges? I wanna get a new phone as well. Like in the US, if they terminate their contract before the actual end date, they're just charged a flat fee like 200-300 dollars (from T-Mobile or Verizon) regardless of how long they have left. With 3, you HAVE to pay the monthly fee*remaining months. That's like almost 700 bucks for me.

    • In Singapore, after the first year, you can upgrade your handset for free and you contract restarts from the day you take the new handset. That's so much better… ARGH! I hate SYMBIAN!!!

      • You're not the only one mate, I've still got 8 months left on my contract.. Tis a shame. :)

Apparently with 3 if you've got less then 3 months remaining they'll let you off the last 3 months if you resign with them. Which is pretty good imo.

So what you're saying in Singapore I could re-sign a new contract every few months and get a different handset.. Sounds unlikely.

        • +1

He said after the first year not every few months!

          • +1

            @POWERevolution: I missed that! Wouldn't that be nice.. :|

          • +1

@POWERevolution: Thanks man. Haha.. And yeah, in Singapore, after the first year you can get a new phone and the contract restarts at that point. You can also get high end phones without upgrading to those really expensive plans.

For example, if you're on a contract that is ..say.. 24/mth. After the first year you wanna get a new phone but on the same plan. There'll be only a certain number of handsets you'll be able to choose from. But if you want the latest phones, you'll have to pay like 150-300 dollars depending on how expensive the phone's retail price is. But you can get the Magic and those phones that have been around for almost a year, for free.

Alternatively, you can get a higher monthly rate plan and get the latest phones for free like Droid and stuff. And the contract termination fees are like US. Just a flat fee like 200 bucks or even much lesser depending on when your contract ends.

Not like 3. That's exorbitant expecting the monthly fee * remaining months for termination. Its not practical assuming that a person won't have a change of mind for 2 solid years. I loved E71 when I first got it and within 1 month when I touched the HTC Dream, I hated Symbian for everything it lacked.

The alternative from 3 is to get the new phone for a monthly fee. The Magic has been around for A LONG TIME. And I called 3 and asked for my options. They said, I can get the Magic but my contract will restart on the 49 cap starting today and I will have to pay additional 40 bucks a month for the handset.

That means the Magic ends up costing me: $960. And that doesn't include any plan fees which is $1176.

Again, I'm not complaining about the deal. The deal is awesome for new people or people whose contract ends soon. Android is one of the best OSes for mobile phones. The freedom you get and the power you get by rooting it and overclocking your CPU and all that is just downright awesome. I'm just complaining about 3.

            Sorry for the long post!

            • @ragflan: don't apologise for a long post, usually they are informative and very helpful

  • +1

Confirmed working with the 100special promo code.

    • !!!!it really works!!!!!that's $100 credit!! thanks mate~~u got any other promo code???

      • Wow reduces it to $509 total cost.. Man, that's seriously a bargain! :)

        • i think if you apply the $100 code, you no longer get the first 3 months free

          • @frankenslai: really?

            • @jva: the first 3 months free option disappeared once i typed in the $100 code, someone else pls try and then confirm

              • @frankenslai: confirmed…forget about the promo:(

                • @jva: $100 off is better then 3 months free anyway.

Either deal is still pretty sweet.

    • Before you all get excited, let me share you my experience regarding 100special promo code.

Three had a similiar code before (maybe even the same one). I used the 100special equivalent code (instead of the code with the special deal) and sure enough the system let it through.

However, one month later, Three simply removed the $100 credit.

I just want to let you know that Three can (and in my case did) change the terms and conditions. The worse part, they did not send me a letter indicating their system made a mistake and allowed 100special. They just changed it.

The 100special is a great code. Problem is… if Three decided not to honour it, they would simply remove the $100 credit and they would not put the original promo code back in.

  • The Magic is the previous model. The current model is the Hero. One annoyance with the Magic you should be aware of is the lack of a 3.5mm stereo socket.

    • what size of socket is on Magic? 2.5mm?or miniUSB?

      • mini-usb

        • there should be some converters

          check dealextreme

  • I've got one - It's quite a good phone for a tech lover. Frequent updates to the firmware are available from cyanogenmod.com, which is quite exciting.

This is a great price. For a techie, this delivers the best bang for your buck at the moment. (Obviously, there will be newer and better phones on the market next year - that's always true).

  • Kicking myself for not waiting a little more….

    Frickin' hate Symbian OS's.

    • I love my Symbian OS.. BUT I haven't exposed myself to the iPhone or Android yet. Ignorance is bliss! :-)

      • Once you've used any OS other than Symbian you will realize how old and clunky it is

        • Yeah, I'll be sorry to leave it cause it was the king for so long, but the capabilities of the little that I'm aware of blow Symbian away.

  • Compare to HTC hero, beside the sound input, are the software of functionality the same as Hero?

    • Yup.. It's the same OS.. Hardware might be different though, therefore possibly more (or less) lag..

  • If you enter "100special" for the promo code it gives you $100 credit but you seem to lose two other options:

    1. The free 3 months (29x3 = $87)
    2. Free Delivery
    • So, how much is the delivery cost?

  • Nice, just wish they had better coverage, especially now they are part of Vodafone.

    • That's the kicker for me..
3 is useless unless it's a MegaG phone, or they get Voda 900MHz coverage (and it's a suitable handset).
Obviously MegaG phones are only good for calls cause roaming data is so expensive!

      • Not sure what "MegaG" is, the phone says it supports the 850 network - does this phone roam onto NextG? I need to use my phone nears some nextg only towers…

        • That's 850Mhz for GSM, not UMTS.

        • Mega G is 3's marketing speak for Telstra's (marketing speak) NextG network..
MegaG capable 3 phones can roam onto some portions of the NextG network (areas that are covered by Optus/Voda 3G) for phone service (included in the cap) and for data (not included in the cap, not much anyway).

  • whats better this or the e71?

    • Depends on what you want to use it for.

I have an E71, and I think it is going to be my last Symbian device (and my first one being a Psion 5mx :) The OS just feels out-dated comparing with Android 1.6/2.0. E71 does have a good keyboard though, however it is not effective as E71 does not have a good Gmail client (and I spend a lot of time on emailing on the phone).

  • The plan does not appear come with any download quota. Do you need to get a separate plan for data? looking at the iPhone plans in comparison, which all have download allocations. What's best way around this? or are people looking at this phone better off using it as a normal phone only?

  • add $8 a month to get 250MB… not too much more and much better than getting an iphone for sure.
