You will get considerably more scratches in your paint from a tarp, than you will from a cat.

some cats never learned to retract their claws when walking over things. my co-worker's cat is like that so her car has scratches all over.
i've never had such a problem with the cats in my neighbourhood walking on my car. all i get are cute, dusty paw prints and occasional slide marks down my windscreens :D
