  • I don't Belong…

We're currently unable to provide services at your address

    • Your mum always told you that you're special.

    • I've had that message come up for two places where they could in fact provide services, and in one case, did provide service. Ring them instead.

      • where they could in fact provide services

        Even on a RIM?

All I am saying is that their online address checker is often wrong.

        • @pjetson:

their online address checker is often wrong.

Doesn't fill me with confidence about the quality of their other systems then…

        • @jv: Most ISP's seem to have similar problems with their online address checking. Maybe they all use the same database?

Anyway, I have a service with Belong, and it's perfect.

Doesn't fill me with confidence about the quality of their other systems then…

Yeah, doesn't make sense. I mean how hard can it be to keep perfect data quality for ~7.6 million ref premises worth of textual address information, which can be updated by local councils and needs to be checked against NBN as well, who most likely get their text addresses from a different source?

I mean, didn't Apple nail a similar geographical data project?

        • @Domingo:

which can be updated by local councils and needs to be checked against NBN as well

          Telstra have all the data…

        • @jv:

Telstra probably have a lot of data of a complex, ever changing data set. Like Street vs St vs street vs st, street numbers like 55-57 vs 55-57 vs 57, unit 505 vs unit 5, level 5 etc etc.

There isn't a universally used set of standards and maintaining millions of records at perfect accuracy is essentially impossible. I'm sure Telstra does a very good job of it, but saying they have all the data is pretty naive.

New buildings open up all the time and the data is only as accurate as the person who types it in and as timely as when the person who is responsible for entering it into a system or submitting it into whatever process gets around to doing it.

The 2 places I checked have been there for over 20 years…

@jv: Before I had my current Belong service connected, I checked their online address checker, and it said "no deal". I then rang Belong, and they said "deal". The house has been there for a lot longer than 20 years.

When I was considering moving house, I typed in the new address and again it said "no deal". I checked the houses on either side, and it said that service was available to both houses. Knowing the layout of the street, that made no sense at all. So, I rang Belong and they agreed and said they could do it. I didn't move to that address, so I don't know for sure if they could.

I kind of get the impression that the online checker only returns yes if there is currently a Telstra telephone service connected to the premises.

  • I'm with belong and on a RIM. Not great but no worse than any service on a RIM

  • Really very poor Service- Super slow speed- STAY AWAY FROM THEM!!!!
    BELONG, belongs Nowhere!!!

    • Hmmm, interesting you stay that. I have had them for 4 months and no real issues. I must admit the call centre had a longer wait time when I called for this deal.

Again, I could be an exception too.

    • Since they use Telstra infrastructure, if you have a slow connection with Belong, then you'll likely have a slow connection with any other ISP as well.
