Our Petrol Price Actually Isn't So Bad

Here's a chart of world prices: http://tinyurl.com/nvzh9ye

Short of countries that produce oil or are right next to them, Australia doesn't fare so bad, especially considering the "Australia Tax" so many other products have imposed.

Have been in Europe for a while and their prices are worse than ours, let alone the +~40% exchange rate difference!

To give some real perspective to the situation.

yeah but people are used to what they're used to

we really dont care about countries who are worse than us, hell we only have to look at New Zealand

its the human condition to compare where the 'grass is greener'

do you think that a poor person who has to budget their petrol usage is going to sit there and go "oh but people in Hong Kong or Scandinavia is so much worse than me so I should suck it up"

    no

they will say oil is $40 a barrel so why the hell arent i getting a break?

    • I thought poor people don't have cars?? :-P

        I dont subscribe to Hockeynomics.

    • In Nuz Lund it is around $2.02 per litre for unleaded 95

I don't think the issue is how we compare to other countries, it's the fact they use the excuse of the price per barrel to justify when it was around $1.60 a L, e.g. $100 a barrel, but when it drops down to $50 a barrel the prices are still $1.30.

    • Factor in our lower $ value now and don't forget that part of our pump price is tax. So when there is a rise or fall it is never proportionate.

      ^^^Bingo.
There are two issues with petrol pricing that really gets to me:
      1. Global oil price increases are usually reflected at the bowser - decreases are seldom reflected, and
      2. Petrol is the only staple commodity whose consumer price can change by 25% overnight for no apparent reason.

Apart from Australia only the 3rd world has 91 RON though…

    • I think the US has 87 MON which is just a shit.

To be fair, I filled up at $1.18 today so some places are passing on the drop.

      • was $1.19 on the coast a few days back now it jumped to $1.46.

the dollar didnt change that much, the oil price didnt change that much so why a 20% increase.

  • Given that Norway is one of the largest oil exporters, Im surprised that it is number three from the bottom.

    • govt. is proactive, very PROACTIVE in making petrol use low by keeping prices high via taxes

its a win win really… lowers greenhouse, pollution, injuries etc.

think of it as a country overtake by the greens

It is such an irony. On one hand you support carbon producing industries by exporting large quantities of oil and on the other hand you tell your people to go green…it is no wonder people hates politicians…
