Miller Lithium 18650 Battery Charger USD $4.17 (~AUD $6) @ GearBest

50

hey people i was looking for chargers and found these and i done some reading and they appear to be good i will run through some specs

1 amp charging current which i feel is a bit high for the smaller lithium cells… But the charger can fit in flat top 18650s so it should be more then okay to charge those… but the flat tops 18650s is biggest battery it can fit!!!! but it can be modded to fit the protected cells…

It charges to around 4.16-4.17 volts then cuts off.

Does not heat up!

Also has a built in USB charger function (battery bank) so you can charge your gear up on the go if need be! (i carry a spare 16340 with me always)also has a cut of feature at 2.9v so it doesn't over discharge cells

Reverse polarity connection

Runs of standard micro usb!

There is two models one with a (battery bank) feature and one with out. the later is $2.58 USD so its a bit cheaper but both use same circuitry

Both are about one dollar cheaper then on fasttech! bargain lol But they do have good reviews and for a battery charger that is strange.. they can,t be any worse then the klarus CH1 i brought!

HKJ done a review on the charger but its the version 8 this is the version 9

Or get one of these for cheaper, and features an LCD capacity display..

    • But why so many downvotes?

      • nvm

      • I'd also like to know? Happy to have constructive criticism. All I can think is because it is marketed as a power bank. But there's no reason you couldn't use it as a charger, simply keep the lid off.
I have one, and for the price, it seems to work fairly well.

It might be because the unit you linked to doesn't mention whether it can take button top cells, what the charging cutoff is, and whether it will discharge beyond 2.6v. The Miller chargers are quite well regarded and have been tested by a number of different people so you know what you are getting.

Having said the above, have an upvote for providing an alternative.

      • Fair points.

  • I have both the black and white versions of these miller chargers (i think v5/v7) baught from fasttech ages ago.

Watch out if you're using 18650 protected batteries it may not fit in the white without some modification.
Not sure if they fixed that in v9 version that gearbest seems to be selling.

It says the maximum supported length is still 65mm on the product page so it seems like v9 has the same design flaw.

      • Well i guess an option is to unwrap the bottom of your protected 18650 cells and rip out the protection boards….
or if its like the older version, the negative terminal is actually two pieces of metal and you can remove one….
or substitute negative terminal for a spring!

If using first option….becareful as the copper strips can short if touch the battery case/terminals.

  • I've bought a few versions of these over the years and they don't fit any protected 18650 cells (including flat tops). It's possible to modify the metal contact plate and the casing, but it's tedious and isn't a perfect fit. I'm not sure why they haven't updated the design. It's a good price though.

If you're looking to charge protected cells, then the XTAR MC1 Plus fits every 18650 battery I've used. It doesn't have the power bank function though.

    • Yea the xtars are good I have a MC0 I use it to charge my smaller cells but it is so slow but I guess it's better for the batteries.

  • For a few more dollars, I'd highly recommend this instead. Xtar seems to have a great reputation and so far this charger has been working great. Plus you won't have to wait a month for GearBest to dispatch the item…it's never taken an item more than 2-3 weeks from banggood, to arrive for me.

    • xtar mc1 cannot be used as powerbank =/

      • It's really not a practical solution as a powerbank, I can easily see the battery slipping out constantly. If you want to use your 18650 as a power bank, I'd probably be looking for something like this…
        http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Portable-USB-Mobile-Power-Bank-Ch…

        • I have a miller one and havent had problem with battery slipping (Except when i put it with all the junk in my bag).
I guess a temporary solution is use a rubber band..

I like the miller because I carry a few 18650s on me when travelling and swapping is easy.

        • @wwwsam: out of interest, why do you normally travel with 18650's?

        • +1

          @wholesaleturbos:

Carrying individual 18650 batteries is lighter than carrying a powerbank and they can be used in torches etc. I do the same thing when travelling and hiking.

        • @ComfortablyNumb:

A bit late but essentially what ComfortablyNumb said.
More convenient, lighter, flexible, and depending on the cell, more energy then comparable powerbank.
(I use Panasonic NCR18650B and some samsungs I removed from laptop battery.)
I also carry a 18650 powered torch and gps so it's convenient to be able to swap if I forget to recharge.

Also as a further note, I dont know why, but they dont really seem to care about you carrying multiple 18650s on a plane. (Though they may run your bag through the scanner a few times…)

I guess if you do not have any items that run on 18650, then stick with a powerbank.more convenient in the sense that you have less parts to juggle.

I have similar experience with gearbest, I had two orders from gearbest that I had never received.

Inspecting all my previous orders from my gearbest account and I have an interesting discovery, I noticed the ones I received they were shipped out from Hong Kong. The ones I never received they were sent from China Post.

But you wouldn't know where the item will be shipped when you place the order…Same here, I would stay away from gearbest and stick to banggood.

      • Really I have never had an issue at all. Maybe it's the shipping method last time I use the free shipping and it came from DHL. Hit up paypal

        • I didn't expect that would have happened to me previously, but when this happened I got really frustrated and the support would indicate it was a flat rate shipping with no insurance. Raised with PayPal but I'm prepared for losing the argument.

Banggood ordering system has been really good with reliable shipping, otherwise I would go for ebay and I really like their customer FEEDBACK channel.

Learn from the pain, I find most of these items are available from Chinese ebay sellers and buying through ebay with PayPal, you would receive a much better support as most of the Chinese sellers are so focused on customer services and their feedbacks. They are keen and would do the right thing for their customers most of the time.
