Joiner Jig System

Hello Ozb's, I need your help and advise on this joiner jig system use to make your home furniture. How effective is this to a person who has never done a home project on his own apart from putting together ikea furniture etc.

What kind of joins are you doing? Pocket holed? Dowels? Dovetail?

In theory, if you have the right tools, patience and take your time, they can be done. The secret to success is getting everything just right. A dovetail is a beautiful thing when done right, but pretty ordinary if you don't get your cuts right and there is gaps (not to mention you lose some of the strength).

It also depends on the tools you have. No reason hand tools used correctly won't produce a perfect dovetail, but you need a decent work area, good wood vice and clamps etc.

Get some offcuts and practice for the weekend making the same joint over and over and you'll get a real feel for it. Once you're comfortable, try making a very simple box. It'as a satisfying feeling when you nail it… no pun intended.

I have been using a similiar system to these called a Kreg Jig for a few years, and I am happy with it.

However like all these types of things it does not end with just buying the jig, you need to think about the types of projects you will want to build and what space you have to work in. At a minimum you would be needing a workbench or table, cordless drill some clamps and maybe some sort of power saw unless you can get all your timber cut to size.

My brother-in-law bought one and I checked out the plans that came with it and they seem pretty good, although I have not used his jig (come to think of it he hasn't either) it looks similar to mine.

So I guess if you can measure and cut accurately or get someone to cut for you then they are not a bad way to get into woodworking.

  • Thank you guys for sharing your thoughts on this, I will leave it for the furniture guys to take care of it and I just buy and assemble as normal as I used to do.
