expired Netgear ReadyNAS Duo 500GB - $279.30 + Shipping - 30% off - Dick Smith Online
This was posted 3 years 4 months 10 days ago, and might be an out-dated deal
First submission so hope this is OK! Noticed this one the Dick Smith website. I already have this NAS and am very happy with it, aside from storage I use it to stream to my PS3 and to a Squeezebox Duet. There is also a great support forum.<!—break—>
Note it has a status of "On backorder" however I was able to add it to the cart and proceed to the final step of purchase, it still showed the NAS as $279.30. The postage shown was $9.95 which is also cheap in my view. And maybe Officeworks will do the 5% off pricematch? Good luck!

yes, it's very slow. smallnetbuilder shows it has very poor W/R speed. http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/component/option,com_nas/Item...

Well on that website in the review for this device it says "Even with its default settings, the Duo's performance puts it near the top of our NAS Charts for dual drive NAS devices." See here http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/nas/nas-reviews/30462-netgear...
I think this is a very good deal. These are a big step up from normal LAN boxes, and are targeted at professional users. And you can buy spare parts for them just like a PC. I'd get one if I didn't already use a PC for my NAS.

As for the average read/write performance, Duo is less than 1/3 of Qnap ts-239 which is top notch 2bay nas, or 21.4MB/s vs 67.2MB/s for read, and 16.1 MB/s vs. 64.9MB/s for write.

For others considering this NAS, I'm not sure I'd class this one as a "toy". It is very well built and well featured, easy to use and I've found it very reliable. Yeah it could be quicker and quieter, but I'd it is quick enough and quiet enough for most, and real value at this price. There are other devices out there with the "NAS" label at a similar price which don't come up to this class.

That long 2 years in the IT industry kind of supports what I'm saying. How many other NAS's are still around after 2 years? Speed isn't everything. Reliability should be paramount.
eg. Imagine 2 years ago you bought a bling super high benchmark speed NAS, and it craps out now - the NAS itself not the HDDs. You would need to try and get hold of a working one to put your old HDDs in to recover your data. Chances are the manufacturer would have moved on to several generations of the next blingest NAS, so you are likely to be SOL. Or you might be able to spend a lot of time or pay someone to try to recover the actual data from the HDDs in whatever format and encryption that particular box uses. Again, you are likely to be SOL.
If you bought the readyNas 2 years ago, you could go out and buy spare parts today, or still buy one brand new.
lukelegend on 10/01/2010 - 10:59 ¶I JUst brought one on Friday from Umart and paid over $300 for a non harddrive one, this is a great deal :)
lukelegend on 10/01/2010 - 11:31 ¶I put 2 x 2 TB seagates in one on friday, i think thats the biggests for that model.
Edit - I just found this http://1800memory.com.au/images/xl/Netgear-ReadyNAS-Chart-1_...
Says 4 gig max for that model
I have two 1.5TB drives currently in mine. Can go to 2x2TB - see http://www.readynas.com/?page_id=82.
savememoney on 10/01/2010 - 13:14 ¶Hi kaddude,
So you got the Netgear ReadyNAS Duo 500GB and then replaced the drives with 2x 1.5TB? Does the replacement drives have to be the ones listed in http://www.readynas.com/?page_id=82 or can you use any ones?
Cheers.
+3 votesYou can use any SATA disk but the listed ones are models that have been tested and verified. I run a Seagate ST31000333AS and a Western Digital WD1001FALS-00J7B0 in mine.
I've had this same model Readynas duo for over 12 months now. I replaced the supplied HDD with 2 1TB drives. It is certainly not silent but you can tweak the internal fan etc. W/R speeds are more than acceptable. I have no dramas streaming 1080 HD content to my PS3. The little extras like a built in BT client mean you can leave this running to download away with out running up your PC. That's great if you have a large off peak download allowance.
The price quote is very good. When I got mine Dick Smith had it for sale for a similar price to this. I went to Officeworks and they did the price match less 5% thing. I know there are some on the shelf at the Melbourne QV OW but I am not sure if it is the diskless verison or the 500GB version.
+1 voteMy bro just got another reply after he sent a complaint through this morning. Then he called up to complain and DSE got back to him about it. They have now said they will honour the orders placed yesterday and the shipment should arrive next week but i dont think they will accept any more orders. Has anyone tried ordering today?

It's a good price however i refunded this device straight away since it was extremely slow, very loud and limited to what it could do.
I guess if you just want to do media playback and LAN storage then it's good but i went with the QNAP which obviously is more expensive but was far more worth it that this.
