looking to get some malaysian dollars for an upcoming trip..
looking at getting about 300 aud worth..
normally I wouldn't get it here but there are so few citibank atms in malaysia, so it better to have some handy before I find one
normally I got to KVB but they only do major currencies.
any recommendations?

Try: http://www.supay.com/ not sure if they have Malaysian currency, but when I used the US dollars and Hong Kong dollars it was very close to the live currency rates.

I went to one of the big malls in KL to exchange AUD for MYR. The fx rate was almost dead on to what Google had, with no commissions or fees. If you don't need the cash immediately, give the mall exchanges a shot
yeah .. I just need a little bit of cash for food at the aiport and get bus/train to the city before I take money out

For food at KLIA2 and KLIA Ekpress train to KL Sentral, you'll be fine with $20 AUD per person. Another $15 each for a prepaid sim with about 2GB of data from HotLink.
Try "Travel Money Oz's" Store at 399 George Street, Sydney.
However, I would suggest to encash minimum amount here in Australia. I found that-
Exchange rate in Sydney money exchange < Exchange rate in KL money exchange < Exchange rate in KL ATMs (RHB or Maybank) using Citibank card.
During my 2013 visit, I used a non-Citibank ATM (Maybank) in KL with my Citibank Visa debit card and got better rate than any exchange I used in KL. I was really surprised.
