Best deal so far for the Neato Botvac D80 Robotic Vacuum Cleaner. I got 2 previously but this is best so far. Note that Amazon usually sells this for $499US + postage $72US but the D80 is now $449 and with the 15% for AMEX card holders it will bring that down to $382.49 + postage (US). With the Australian dollar still hovering above 70c its probably a good time to buy.
TO get the discount you must enter a AMEX credit card and Australian postage address. The discount will automatically then show up. The are 3 types of postage available but I got the cheapest before and got the package within a week. All trackable.
Also, don't let Amazon convert to AUS $$ as it gives a worse conversion rate than the bank will.
The cheapest D80 in Australia is at OZrobots.com.au for $849 + $28 postage and its pre-order only. The older Neatos (XV and 80) still sell at David Jones and Myer for over $900.
The only thing you need is a clover leaf power cable which you can get almost anywhere but at Jaycar it costs $7. The power supply supports 240V.
As I said, I have two (one at home and one at work) and they are fabulous. I have been using Neatos for around 6 years and have the older XVs and a 80 but the D80 seems to clean better and not as noisy.

  • That is a good price

  • omg that is a great price!

  • Does this have international warranty? Planning to buy for my folks in asia. Thanks

    • +2

Amazon US usually are pretty good with returns as it is going through them and they have to provide a warranty when they post outside the US. Having said that, they are pretty robust.

      • Thanks soupratt!

      • +1

Anyone know if the additional protection is available for international buyers? $34 for 3 years seems decent.

      • And Amazon UK. A few years ago I bought a Bosch faulty electric lawnmower. They shipped it and it was faulty. I returned it and they paid for the return postage (which was nearly half the cost of the product) and then sent me a replacement.

Edit: also had a Neato from Amazon US that battery didn't last more than a few months. They sent me brand new ones (double pack) but I had to pay about $10 postage. (Which I didn't mind as they were sending me x2 batteries).

Only positive experience with Amazon support when things go wrong.

  • I've had a XV-11 for about 4 years and absolutely love it (after getting two defective units initially). Is it worth the upgrade?

    • Definitely. Much more intelligent software.
I had 2 XV (XV-12 and XV-21) and they both went great guns for years. Got 2 battery upgrades. One still works. The other stopped charging.

      • how much you paid for the new battery?

        • +1

depends where you get them. For the old ones between $50-80

      • You mean the cleaning patterns are better? I find the XV11 isn't too bad in the way it goes about it. Batteries need replaceing every 12-18 months I find, but at $90 I find that a reasonable maintenance cost.

        • +1

Yes, seems to have better cleaning patterns. The newer ones have better software as the XV models haven't had any software updates for quite a long time. As I said, I love the older Neatos and that is why am giving them my business with the newer models. I am just a sucker for new technology :)

  • +1

People say that the Neatos tend to fail pretty regularly. That's the only thing that turns me off from buying one without a good local warranty. What has your experience been over 6 years, OP?

    • Have had the older models (see above) and none failed spectacularly. One is coming onto 6 years. The batteries last for around 18-24 months but that is heavy use. And are not too expensive to replace. One of the XVs just started failing recently but still clinging onto lift (just). It did have a hard life.
As for the D80's, they are just an evolution from the XV and 80 and I suspect they have worked out all the bugs. The newer ones are better built but time will tell. Not sure the $250-300 price difference between local stock and imported is worth it. Also, most local retailers won't sell the D80 for a long long time. Ozrobots is selling imported stock so warranty will be grey.

    • Not the OP, but can offer my 2 cents on this topic based on our experience: Personally, I consider these a high failure rate product (we're currently on to our 5th neato unit since Aug 2011 - i.e. 4 years). The first one was an XV-11 ordered from the US (aimtofind.com), it failed in 3 months (snapped plastic clip on wheel), and had to ship it back to neato repairs and pay return postage (over $100), then the replacement failed 5 months after that (lasers out of alignment, and another > $100 return shipping cost to neato repairs), then the replacement replacement went quite well for over 18 months but started getting flaky (and at this point we could have replaced the batteries for around $80, which MAY have helped, but it was starting to develop other problems too with RPS error messages, so decided to replace it entirely), then we bought an XV-21 locally from Myers with 5 year extended warranty for ~$750 (ouch!), then that died around 9 months later in Nov 2014 (error about lasers no longer spinning), and Myer replaced with a new one, and did a full refund/repurchase, so the whole 5 year period restarted from that date. Current one seems okay so far.

My advice: Love not doing the vacuuming, great device, but assume it will fail and either buy local from a physical store close to you AND PAY FOR THE MAXIMUM EXTENDED WARRANTY (please don't tell me about ACL, I never ever get extended warranty on anything else, but this a product where you want it in black and white that they contractually must fix it, even 4.5 years later), or if you get it from the US make sure that the store pays return postage (which was around $125 a pop last time I shipped a neato back to the US for repairs) and definitely buy the extended warranty from the store or neato.

And my impression is that they are getting more reliable over time, but compared to every other consumer object in my life, they still fail a lot, and you should be very aware of that in your purchasing decision (e.g. I'm quite happy knowing I won't pay another cent for robotic vacuuming until after Nov 2019, that's a liability I want on someone else's books, based on my experiences).

  • Noob in this robot vacs… Is Neato effective for carpets?

    • +1

Yes. But I wouldn't put them on massive shag pile. Normal carpet is fine. And it cleans very thoroughly. Its quite interesting to see how much it actually picks up when you empty out the rubbish tray.

      • I have two cats and a dog, and three women in the house. She eats up their hair and dust. I have to Empty her waste tray daily.

        • Actually, the D80 brush is apparently good for pets (and girls who shed a lot :) )

        • @soupratt:

I agree, it is good, its juts I have to empty it daily, that's how good she is!

    • I have floorboards but also shaggy rugs.

Dorothy (my robovac) gets routinely stuck on the very shaggy rugs around two of the beds and in the rumpus room. Otherwise she is perfect for low shaggy rugs.

She eats socks, nerf darts, hair ties…
Then she'll beep until cleaned out.

Use her daily. Keeps the house clean.
I wish I could upgrade her wheels to be able to drive over shaggy rugs.

    • -2

That can't be it. OP said it cost $7

      • Yep. As per OZbargain you save 5 cents :)

  • Great price.. If my XV-11 wasn't still kickin I'd grab one.. (now lets just hope it doesn't die days after the deal expires :)

  • What is this useful for? I have a 2 bedroom place, not really looked into robot vacuums. Does it do everything I could do or do you still need to touch up parts ? e.g. under the table, near kitchen etc. How well does it navigate ?

    • +1

Useful if you don't like vacuuming because you can schedule it to start when you are out. It does very well with navigation but obviously it won't fit between anything narrower than it. If you have an uncluttered floor then it works well. Have a look at the link and reviews on Amazon.

      • Very helpful thanks :) Just reading about it now. Any idea how this compares to the cheapo aldi one (about $150 from memory). No doubt it is better, but don't know enough to evaluate !

        • +1

The cheap ones aren't even in the same universe. They just randomly bump into things and do very badly on carpet. Anything under $500 really isn't worth buying. Have a look at the irobot ROOMBA range. Similar but not quite as intelligent. And price $$$$.

        • The neatos have a laser mapping system so it works out where everything is as it goes.

It breaks a space up into small sections, does a perimeter run, then takes a path up and down within that perimeter. Then it repeats on the next section.

End result is its done much quicker and doesn't miss any spots.

It also has a much more powerful vacuum compared to cheaper bots (consider them more as robo sweepers) and even more expensive Roombas.

        • @soupratt: how does this compare to the roomba 980?

        • @minMaxRNG:

It's roomba playing catch up (despite them saying for years bounce bots were better because they pass over a spot multiple times.)

Anyway, I think the 980 RRPs at US$900, even if it was equally as good you're going to be paying a lot more for it. It's mapping system is not laser either and from what I've read not as good.

If you want a WiFi connected bot, the Neato Botvac Connected will be out soon and retails for $200 less than the 980 also.

        • -1

          @minMaxRNG:

No idea. Never had a Roomba. But unlike the Neatos, they are essentially "dumb" in that they tend to be more random and pass over the same area over and over again.

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V7PIjwfw30U

And thats the older Neato (XV series) but I not sure which Roomba

        • @soupratt: appreciate the heads up and the reviews:) bit the bullet going to give it a shot !

  • Is this any good for bamboo floor? If not could you guys recommend anything? Thanks.

    • +1

Yeah, great bot for all floors

    • +1

Its great for hard floors. Its actually one of the few robotic cleaners which actually does well on most surfaces.

  • Better than Dyson eye.

    • How much is that ?

Edit. Just checked .. Its > $1300AUD (actually ~ $1000USD). About twice the cost and it is monstrously hideous and waaaay too tall to fit under couches etc.

    • how so?
in your opinion? i haven't found any review comparisons that are neutral

  • Wow, the shipping & handling fees are USD 72.27.

  • Anyone know what the postage would be to ship to WA?

    • I think the cheapest postage anywhere in Australia is $72USD. The discount with AMEX essentially almost makes the postage free. And with the $59USD current existing discount it is still damn cheaper than anytime before.

    • Amazon has estimated postage now (without having to checkout and then cancel at the very last moment.)

      Shipping to Perth:
      Items
      $449.99
      Estimated shipping & handling
      $72.27
      Total before tax
      $522.26
      Estimated tax to be collected
      $0.00
      Estimated order total
      $522.26

      • @coxymla,
Where did you find the estimated postage?

        • Very last page before pressing final "Submit Order" button.

        • +1

@SickDmith: You don't need to go that far anymore. Just look in your cart and press estimate postage button. If the price on the main item page isn't hidden like it is on the Neato Botvac you can even see the shipping cost on the product page.

  • This thing is amazing at getting under couches, coffee tables anything with a small clearance. You'll be surprised and disturbed how quickly the bin fills up…

  • Black now back in stock people!!

    • I am not sure Amazon ever sold the black on black D80 ? Odd..

    • Are you talking about the black on black model? Do you have a link?

  • +1

    "Botvac"….no, just no.

PS - if you want to avoid fees associated with paying with Amex you can buy the exact value, minus one cent, of gift cards via another credit card (e.g. 28 degrees) & then apply this to your new or existing order.

e.g the order I put through (the vac + a few other things I wanted):

    Order Summary
    Item(s) Subtotal: $530.32
    Shipping & Handling: $91.93
    AMEX Promotion: -$79.55
    Total before tax: $542.70
Estimated tax to be collected: $0.00
    Gift Card Amount: -$542.69
    Grand Total: $0.01

    • You can also reload your balance which will automatically add the selected amount to your Gift Card Balance.

    • What are the fees associated with paying with Amex?? Didn't notice any fees

      • It's normally an international transaction in USD (you can have Amazon do the conversion for you - but they take their cut)

  • How loud are these things. With two young children, I couldnt see it surving the day. Could I program to run at night or is it comparable in noise to a corded vaccuum?

  • I think Amex charge certain % commission fee if u paid in foreign currency, is it still worth it to pay USD instead of AUD for better conversion rate? current amazon show 1 USD = 1.4250376572 AUD

  • Last time I looked, LG Roboking was the favourite. How does Neato compare against it? The flat front does seem to make it superior to the round front of the others.

    • +1

Probably ideal for those with "round" corners in their house :)

    • Half the price as well

  • Is it being discounted due to a new model coming out? The botvac connected seems like a big improvment. Wifi app control and lithium-ion battery. Anyone know when it comes out?

    • No. The D80 (and the D75) are brand new models. Only came out about a month or two ago. The Botvac connected is another $200 more expensive.

      • Is the botvac connected the only one that comes with lithium ion batteries? I have read on various forums about their battery issues and how people have to replace them after 2 years (no more warranty). By getting a lithium ion they should last alot longer and keep charges better… Amazon shows it will be available for order on Nov 1, which is 2 weeks away.. I hope AMEX discount is still around by then :P

        • Yes, I think the connected is the only in the range with lithium batteries. There are issues with that also in regards to charging etc and I suspect replacements will be more expensive but the connected will be a great vacuum i think. Still, its close to 30% more expensive so aside from the batteries I suspect the internal are similar (with different suction mode).

Also, at least in pre-order the Connected doesn't ship to Australia. It might later when they get stock.

  • -3

How do you charge this? Is it made for AU plugs? I ask cos i bought an appliance off amazon once and it came with a US plug, and is made for 110v, much less than our au 240v wall outlets.

    • +1

Did you actually read the original post and previous comments? Keywords to look out for - clover, jaycar.

      • -5

No, as i have no intention of buying it. I only said it so no-one made a mistake like i did.

        • +1

Well, I clearly pointed out that the Neatos have ALWAYS had a dual voltage power supply (110/240) and all you need is a new power cable which can be sourced locally.

        • -2

@soupratt: I really dont care, i only say it so no one makes my mistake, downvote all you want, fuk it then.

        • +2

          @thedude23:

WTF would they make a mistake when someone who has one has clearly explained about the power supply and cable. Only an imbecile would buy something from overseas without making sure about compatibility with Australian voltage.

          And I don't down vote.

  • How does this compare with the Neato XV-21, Neato Robotics XV Signature, iRobot Roomba 770, and iRobot Roomba 650? They all seem to be on sale and sold by Amazon, so sohuld have the 15% discount. Trying to figure out if I can get away with something cheaper!

edit: nvm only this one ships to Oz.

    • The XV series are the older Neatos which don't have any more support in terms of software upgrades. They are actually quite good (I had 2 of the XVs for years) but the D series is a step forward both in cleaning and general "intelligence".
As for the Roombas I will leave that to those who own one but as pointed out below, there are plenty of reviews only. It depends whether you want a vacuum that maps its path efficiently or not.

Also, the only NEato that ships to Australia are the D80 (and the D75 when it was in stock). The older XVs and first generation Botvacs don't .

    • Actually as an example.

Yesterday I took the D80 upstairs to clean. Up to now I had it charging in the ground floor family room and moved just the unit when needed. As I had finished testing it I then moved the charging station upstairs as well but AFTER I had started the D80 on its cleaning run. Started cleaning near the stairs and I put the charging base in the bedroom. I thought there was no way it was going to find it after it had finished and as usual it just finishes where it starts. To my surprise, when I went upstairs later, the D80 was sitting happily in its charging base, charging away.
So while cleaning it must have notice the base and remembered where it was when it finished cleaning. I guess one of the advantages of its mapping.

  • I have the Roomba 770. I know it does a great job just looking at the dirt it collects each week in the dust cartridge. I know there are 100s of comparisons with Neato and their supposed intelligent laser mapping, but I'm happy with the Roomba does. No complaints been using it for a year now. Buy it if it is cheaper than Neato and if you can get it shipped here.

  • +1

    Thanks - just ordered one.

November 23-December 4th is the ETA - so a pretty long wait unfortunately. Hopefully it's worth it!

    • Thats interesting. Wonder if its a stock issue or you live on the top of a mountain :) The other two times I ordered (with the cheapest postage) it got to Melbourne in under 10-11 days.

    • I ordered one to Melbourne and have been given the same ETA.

  • Live in Perth, must be a stock issue

  • Just as luck would have it, I finally decided to get it last night before bed. I went and bought the gift card first with 28 degrees for US $454.75 as suggested by earlier post and pay the remaining 1c with AMEX.

It took awhile to get the giftcard to be sent to my email, I keep refreshing for 20 mins and it's still not there, so I decided to go to bed and do it in the morning.

Woke up at 2AM and saw the giftcard in my email and decided to get it straightaway. Opened the link and it's showing $499! I thought maybe it's the mobile browser showing a different price, tried the desktop browser and it's still showing the same :(

Ended up still getting it for 496 something USD. Not as good as before but I wouldn't know what else to get with the giftcard.

    • Sorry to hear that mate, in a similar boat with a group present we were considering.. took too long to decide and now we're stuck with the higher price too! Considering downgrading to the D75 but it's out of stock.. hmm.

  • Ordered on 18/OCT.

my neato has been shipped. ETA is 23/ OCT .

That is quick. especially for a pre purchase

  • yup got an update last night saying it had shipped and ETA 23/10… much faster than end of November that was first sent

  • anyone got theirs yet? Thoughts? Mine's due for delivery today - looking forward to it!

  • Just got mine today!

  • Have ran mine twice since I got it - great! struggles with dining room chairs, so they get put up before it runs. Other than that, works brilliantly. Have had to use the 1 ply tissue hack to prevent the filter from clogging up - might try use some flyscreen or similar moving forward. Strange design flaw that they seem to keep repeating.

Other than that, can't complain at all - great device!

    • I use the ducted vacuum to clean the filter. Any other strong vacuum can help also.
Also, in the box there is a comb like device used to clean the filter. Yes, the new design is a bit of a pain as the ridges are quite deep. The original XV-21 has a thinner filter which was easier to clean.
Suggest you get some spare filters. I either get from Amazon or Ebay. Aftermarket ones are ok but make sure they are BOTVAC compatible as the filers are different from the earlier Neatos.

    • The Connected will have a mesh over the filter finally. Have been using the tissue trick on my xv11, works well enough but was also thinking of some flyscreen or finer mesh instead. Get around to it one day :)

(The Connected filter I think may be compatible with the D series tho, so maybe you can get some of those when it's released)
