Amex Gold Card QFF Annual Fee

Just got a letter today regarding my AMEX Gold card (formerly AMEX BMW card) and they have stated that its gone from (annual) fee free to an annual fee of $49 to keep earning Qantas Frequent Flyer points.

Needless to say other Ozbargainers have this card after the popularity of the original deal to get the BMW Gold card, so this is a bit of a FYI to start looking for another card to earn those points without the introduced $49 annual fee.

Only option I see is the AMEX QFF blue card for (annual) fee free but I'm wondering if there is an option yet to use a debit card (rather than credit) to earn points?

  • I only really use my BMW amex for amex offers now. Can I just cancel the Qantas points and keep it without the fee?

    • looks like it.

  • Vote with your wallet, new offers elsewhere keep coming along all the time…

  • I got the letter too. I am thinking of calling them and see if can opt out the QFF program. I am not using the card much except AMEX offers, so $49 is too much.

    • Can you let us know how you go?

A lot of places do not accept amex card, I have the virgin platinum card and it have been rejected by a few chinese restaurants, a pharmacy and my GP. I only use it for online purchase and the big supermarket chain like Coles and Woolies, think of canceling when the renewal comes next year as that card have $349 annual fee.

I called to cancel just now. Easy process - zero hold time and done in 90 seconds. He did offer to change over to the Amex rewards program to remain fee free no problem but I have enough credit cards/rewards programs anyway.

Their website stated they are only open til 7pm AEST but had no problem calling at 8:10pm.
