What position should I go for up on the mines??

A family friend reckons she knows someone who can get me a FIFO job on the mines which I intend to take up so I can get some decent income and financial stability. However she is going to expect me to know what I want to do, and quite frankly i don't. So I'm looking for ideas…

What jobs are available on a mine? What jobs do you think I would enjoy? What jobs are the best paid? What jobs are the least tedious, etc?

I have a uni degree in business/IT Management, I'm an aussie, got good grades in school, interested in IT and have general experience in all things IT related, but no specialty in any one IT field. My other sort of interest would be driving. (I enjoy buzzing around in the forklift and doing deliveries in the truck) So right now I'm thinking either an IT job (don't really want to be cooped up in an office all day, but probably the best position for my future opportunities) or a vehicle operator, which may get quite boring and repetitive shifting dirt from point A to point B all day. Can you give me any other suggestions?

Thanks.

    Driller.

    • What do drillers do? (I guess they drill duh, but could you give me a bit more of an idea of what's involved in a driller's workday? I'm guessing he's frontline at the rockface, manual labour, harsh conditions, unpleasant work, but top end of the income scale. Am I on the money?

Project managers etc are probably highly paid, but unless you're skilled in this industry, which you're not, or know someone in high management, I doubt you'll be able to just pick whatever you please. My guess is the job will be nothing related to your degree and something that only requires a strong build man.

Yeah, I'm guessing it'll be more a matter of take what you can get, and then when I'm up there I'll have more opportunities to move around and work out where I wanna go, get on the job training etc. All the while avoiding layoffs and downsizing :/

    Sex work pays well

  • Doubt very much that anyone would give you a plant operators job when you have zero experience on plant. Too many guys out their with years of exp getting laid off.

I have worked on mines for over a decade.
You really have to ask yourself if the extra money that miners get for spending time alone away from family and friends and losing your weekends and holidays is worth the cost. Your health including mental health is way more important than money. The work is not for every one.
Your degrees mean nothing especially in the current climate. Companies will only be looking for people for tiered roles who have mining experience.
If you have a friend that has recruiting power to get you position. Just take it and give it a go. Most roles at the bigger mine sites are pretty mundane even the tiered roles.
If you are really keen to get into working on mines then go to a recruiting agency who supply for the mines and start with any job you can get and then work hard and make a good name for yourself and introduce yourself to as many people as you can and then you can work your way up to a truck operator role if you have the right personality and work ethics (you do not need experience with trucks before).
