CISA Passes The US Senate

Today the US Senate passed the Cyber Security Information Sharing Act otherwise known as CISA.

In broad terms it seems to be a shocker from what I can see.

Basically it "encourages" private organisations such as Boogle and Facecrack to hand over all your infoz with da gummints in exchange for "protecting everyone's privacy" (seriously!) by sharing intelligence regarding cybercrime like 0-day exploits and such. You'd think they'd share the 0-day exploits as a matter of principle if they actually gave a toss about cybercrime but no, they chose to use it as a lever to spy on innocent Americans.

Oh and if they voluntarily do this they gain immunity from any and all prosecution from concerned citizens who were under the impression they agreed to a EULA or Terms and Conditions. They might want to sue them given that they're being spied on by the services they chose to use.

No idea what this means for Aussies or anyone else but given that the US and other Five Eyes intelligence agreement members already share intelligence with each other about their citizens to avoid the whole "it's illegal to spy on your own citizens" thing we're prolly screwed. Well, screwed if you use a US owned company such as Facecrack or Boogles.

  • Online privacy is such a problematic issue, with apparently nobody in mainstream politics showing an interest.
Support the EFA (www.efa.org.au) and the APF (https://www.privacy.org.au/) and keep badgering the major parties, I guess.
