  • Where is the link for the care pack?

  • How many of these things did they make… Or should I say, couldn't sell?

    • +46

At normal prices, they sell about as quick as they focus.

      • -1

        hahaha, you are correct! hahahah

  • Are reviews good for this camera?

    • +1

If slow AF is good for you, then this camera is for you

According to Ken Rockwell: Autofocus is laughably slow.
      http://kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-m/m.htm

      • +3

Wasn't the AF improved big time with a firmware update??

      • +14

Don't take anything Ken Rockwell says seriously, he's a joke.

With the latest firmware update, the camera is okay to focus. Image quality is as good as any other crop sensor DSLR.

        • What is it he writes that you take exception to?

      • +9

According to Ken Rockwell. That's where I stopped reading.

  • any coupon codes?

    • CANONFF5 is not working

  • +4

I'd buy it if it had the lens adapter instead of the lens..

  • +4

Probably to spend a bit more and get the Sony line of APC-C compact interchangeable lens cameras. The previous NEX line can be had for $300 used I would think.

    • +2

fryandlaurie is right in what they say, but… I bought a secondhand Sony NEX-5 with flash and 18-55/3.5-5.6 lens for $155 in a junk shop in May this year; no instructions, software, cables, box, lens caps, or anything, and the LCD is delaminating; and I thought it a bargain. But this Canon is the complete unused retail package. The Canon 18-55 lens is neater than the Sony. I think I will stick with my tatty Sony, consoling myself with the thought that the lens will work with a full-frame Sony 7, albeit in APS-C mode. However, I reckon that for someone who doesn't yet own a mirrorless ILC, wants APS-C format, and isn't thinking of going full-frame, this is a bargain.

    Must……….RESIST…..

    Ahh…..dammit….

    Will keep my trusty 550D company….. :-)

  • +2

Just to note, this is the first gen, the latest is the M3

    • yes, the new M3 has built-in flash (more practical).
Personally dont like the separate flash unit.
But very good price for a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera

      • -1

And the M3 is also more than 4x the price… and without a lens.

        • +1

The eos m3 slk was around $550 after cash back at DS a few weeks ago.

  • +11

my work has a corp program with canon, ill see if i can get the code we use.

    • +1

Same as mine.. just logged in to see if there is a further discount - unfortunately not same same for all I suppose

      • yeah same, bummer!

  • amazing deal! i just bought a 100d recently. the eos m would be great for beginners, or someone looking for a small frame dslr

  • I use three at work but prefer the adapter kit

  • +1

My brother was looking for an entry level DSLR, so we just bought Nikon D3300 with single lens kit for $472 (after cash back)… Performance wise how does the EOS-M compared to D3300? (Sorry camera noob here, no idea about camera technology).

(We compared D3300 with Canon 1200D, and D3300 was better)

    • +5

D3300 is an amazing piece of tech! NIKON crop body DSLR range - D3XXX, D5XXX and D7XXX; all perform nearly equal sensor-wise. Its just some features (software and buttons/wheels) limited in the lower end D3XXX. Your D3300 performs equal to Canon's higher end crop body, in some cases even better than full frame!

The EOS-M in question here is an entry level Mirrorless from Canon and it generally received Meh reception.

  • compared to RX100M1 which is better?

    • Is this even a question? RX100M1 FTW!

But they are different types of camera, one is P&S and another is interchangeable mirrorless.

      • "RX100m1 FTW" is too generic. eos m has bigger sensor and generally better iso and blur.

but RX100m1 won a few streets in terms of portability.

  • I've just bought one as a video camera. Working pro, am expected to do video. Hate it on the 1DX's (mirror lock-up ftw!)
Also just ordered the EF adapter on ebay. Will retire my M43 camera currently being used as a video camera and use this. Benefit of using all my existing lenses. Whoop.

    • Is it good as a video camera? The slow auto focus must be an issue?

      • Compared to taking video with my Sony HX30V, the image stabilisation is weak and autofocus is poor. Not sure how it compares to cameras in its own category. Might be good value at this price if you'd be doing properly set-up shoots with shallow depth of field, but for point and shoot video, it isn't great.

        • it'll be better than a 1dx with a few accessories, and on par with my m43.
sit down interviews only. nothing fancy

  • Selling fast , already out of stock

  • wish it came with the eos-m to ef adapter…

  • +5

hey guys - I work professionally as a photographer so just wanted to put my opinion and advice on the EOS M3 for fellow Ozbargainers :)

Great camera for $230, uses an APS-C sensor from Canon's entry level DSLRs. Really suitable if you are looking for something around this price range.

entry level DSLR users - short answer is no its not really going to be a step up. The positives of the camera is that its smaller and lighter, but isn't designed to be a workhorse!

Would pickup the care pack for extra $10 - chances are if it goes wrong wishing 3 years canon wont have any more stock and will replace with newer unit ;)

    • +1

This is the 1st generation model not the 3rd.

      • oops yes typo meant M* thanks for picking up on it!

  • awesome price. was $212 at harvey norman when they were clearing out their stock in august - camera+lens+flash

  • Worth it as a point and shoot for holidays and the like?

    • +2

Possibly not. If you want to spend $200 on a point-and-shoot, other cameras might be more suitable to your needs by being more compact. In the Canon range, perhaps the Ixus 220 might suit. See for example http://www.whatdigitalcamera.com/reviews/compact-cameras/can…

    • +1

I would definitely choose this over a point and shoot as a holiday camera. The image quality will be significantly better. Just make sure you're happy with the size

      • I got the first gen rx100 and it's a fantastic point and shoot. Not sure how it would compare to this?

  • I need a camera for indoor lectures. Would this be good?

    • Assuming ur lectures run for more than 1 hour, probably not.

  • From Staticice, the cheapest local stock for the lens itself is $282 so this is definitely a bargain. The 18-55 IS STM lens is a very good kit lens.

  • +2

Would have bought one if it bundles with the 22 pancake….

  • +1

So tempting, but the poor battery life (230 shots) & so-so autofocus + lack of flippable LCD screen (though it is touch screen) is making me lean towards no. Image quality does look great though! Terrible for action but good for anything else & the 18-55 range is fantastic for a small camera

  • I have a Sony a3000 with an APS-C sensor (and also a Pentax Q), is there any point collecting this?

    • +1

R u using your Pentax Q? Got mine after an OZB post, still in its original box.

      • Yeah its great. Sometimes a bit slow to focus, not so great in the dark, doesn't have a panorama more afaik, but otherwise it's a cool. Mine did come with 2 lenses tho.

    • -1

Yes, if you're a collector. The Canon EOS-M was Canon's first mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera. I gather that it was unsuccessful, despite being very well made, because of the perceived sluggish autofocus of early models. It isn't clear if the production of the M2 (not for USA/Oz) and M3 will increase or decrease the value of the original M. The M3 will also be especially collectible because of the Leica M3, and in particular with the effect of the Leica M3 on the Canon firm (Google canon museum leica m3 and click the link to canon.com).

Keep it in its factory seals, and don't think of destructively unwrapping it, let alone using it. Collect all accessories that can be used only with this particular model. Mention it in your will. I am perfectly serious and not being facetious. I'm a collector myself. For instance, I've got a 35mm film format (ie full-frame) Olympus Zuiko 50/1.8 factory sealed lens, which I regard as an investment.

      • +2

How can you draw a comparison to the m3. Very far fetched.

      • +1

If your most worth "collectible" is the terrific albeit extremely common OM Zuiko 50mm f/1.8, then you're doing it wrong I'm sorry. If you had the f/1.2 for example then you'd be on to something. Even then my OM gear will mostly likely be never worth as much as my Leica stuff.

  • Amazing deal? Yes. Great camera? NO!

  • awesome DEAL! bought one Thanks!! suprise the 22mm lens is almost equivalent to the camer flasher and 18-55mm lens..

  • Thanks OP Bought 1 :) and i also bought the Canon 1200D couple months ago. How does this two compare with each other? Any user experience??

    • -2

Why don't you compare them youself, now that you have both? More importantly, why do you buy if you don't know what you're buying?

      • Haha, sorry i should have explained a bit clearer. I plan to just keep either 1 for myself and the other one i would just give as a gift to someone. So, obviously i'd like to keep the better one :)

        • Fair enough; in that case, stick with the 1200D for AF, ergonomics, versatility, lens compatibility (unless you spend more to get an adapter for the M)…

          Comparison here: http://snapsort.com/compare/Canon-EOS-1200D-vs-Canon-EOS-M

        • @FittyFitty:

I have actually never used a DSLR camera before, but i am always interested in learning. So thanks for the info.

I did the google "EOS 1200D vs EOS M", some of the reviews show these two are quite close to each other…

  • Nice deal

    http://youtu.be/wwZDStFUixQ

This camera is simply a piece of shit, worst camera Canon ever made.

    • For taking stills, on travel, ability to use other canon lens it's pretty good for the value. Terrible for kids or anything that moves, the focus is slow, like an old camera. But the shots are still pretty good, able to use manual settings

Not bad to play around or travel with

  • Bought! =) Missed out on the care package tho… Dont understand the logic why there are still stocks for the standalone, maybe it has difference contents in box?

    • Edit:
"Unfortunately when the order was made, an error showed it as available when in fact it was already sold out and therefore we will not be able to fulfil your order."

This might explain why standalone was still available to buy, whilst the care package was sold out.
*sigh… This is the third time were I missed out on the EOS M on Sub $200. Maybe it is a sign, not meant to be had.

  • +1

You could buy this and sell all the parts for more on eBay or some second hand store.
I want the flash and that alone is 70 bucks on eBay with not box!!!!

  • Will this take reasonable pictures of moving snails and turtles?

    • maybe, lol

      yeah
I have a newborn and wife seems to take ok photos even when he's moving around a lot

    • -1

Unfortunately not, the AF won't keep up.

    • Yes

  • Mmm weird says in stock but can't add it to cart

  • Damn. Out of stock now.

  • Yep, out of stock.

  • With the latest firmware the AF goes from 1.9 to 0.4 (roughly depending on lens and such), but apparently it still has issues where it won't detect properly and sometimes won't focus.

  • i wish they have the eos m with the 22mm prime lense kit set at the same price.

  • the only point to get eos-m is the 22mm.

  • Damn, missed it =/

  • Anyone wants to buy go back to the website and check again, it seems they have stock now. :)

  • +1
    • I just put through an order, thanks =)

  • If only it was the 22mm instead of the flash, I would grab one.

  • Its still on. Ordered one. Thanks OP

  • Just received an email:

    "Hi xxxxxx,

I am contacting you regarding your Canon Order made on November 6th for EOS M Single Lens Kit.

Unfortunately when the order was made, an error showed it as available when in fact it was already sold out and therefore we will not be able to fulfil your order.

    Refund, etc, etc."

I ordered around 8:00am so anyone who ordered after that will probably get the same email.

  • On a related note. "CANONFF5" voucher is now active until 15th November if anyone wants a whole 5% off anything in the Canon store.

  • I ordered last night and got the same email :(

  • ordered last night at around midnight and got the email, not bloody good enough

  • Ditto such dissapointment … they prob realize it selling fast and decided to bump it back to normal price and not sell them…

    • …or they really ran out of stock, seeing that it's a 3-year old camera.

  • +2

Mine's been shipped. Got the tracking email this morning.
I genuinely believe they've simply oversold and won't jack the price. There's no point holding this stock. I guarantee it's already been written off.
At least the refunds seem to be coming quick to those who missed it.

    • Out of interest what time did you order?

      • when it had 7 +'ve votes…

      • I placed my order at 11:45 PM for the care pack version, and I received the email telling me it's been shipped.
