Went to the Microsoft Store Sydney pre-launch event this morning - they have some opening day specials:

  • Xbox One 500gb + Kinect = $399
  • Lumia 645XL = $299

They had other deals on a Bose system, a Surface 4 (included office 365 for 2 years) and a Toshiba? laptop - but I can't remember these exact offers.

Do they have "genii" or equivalent?

  • Your linked page said queuing up Wednesday night and grand opening on Thursday ? Are you back from the future ?

    • +5

I was granted access to the store pre-opening. See here on Periscope (before I was asked to not film)

      • Thanks for the post.

Was the pre-opening event open to the public (and is it still open between now and Thursday?)

If you don't mind me asking - how did you score an invitation?

      • This broadcast has expired

      • will panos be there?

  • Can someone find that price on the SP4? XBone is good but I'm hoping for 10% off SP4.

          @FittyFitty: Sony Playstation 4…

Students, parents and faculty of K-12 schools get 10% off. Hope that helps.

      • I'll take that! Thanks for the reminder, didn't realise it was K-12, often those deals are for Uni only.

        • +1

Oh, no, it's not K-12. Uni & TAFE only:

"High school and primary students are not eligible for the offer."

For $50 more is this a better bundle?

How much are the games worth?

    • -1

If your not close to this store then that bundle might be worth it to save on convenience, but realistically those games are worth $35-$45 collectively. I have Black Flag code I didn't use on XBO for $5 if your interested?

    • -1

      Not really.
Assassins creed bundle is worth maybe $20 or less. Dance Central is worth less than $10. So you are paying $50 for $30 worth.
But if you are too far away from Sydney the extra $20 might be worth it!

      • Thanks guys. New to these consoles. Trying to decide what to get for the kids. Age range 5 to 13 y.o. So many bundles out there. It would appear 500GB and Kinect is what we might need?

I am totally biased (SNES at a young age) but I would go for a Wii U as it is great for kids. However, the next console might be coming in 2016/2017 so might not be the best purchase.
You can play the entire catalogue of Wii and Wii U games on it and you can get mario kart 8 and splatoon for about $336 with 20% discount and cashrewards.

Catbarf (what a name) has a good point. Also, Xbox live is full of 12 year olds saying they're going "to r#pe me". This drove me to buy and build a $2000 gaming PC, where 24-28 year olds say they're going "to r#pe me" — which I feel is far more acceptable.

        • @catbarf: I agree. Wii U games sometimes have a "younger sibling" mode too, for example Rayman Legands or Yoshi's Wooly World. That way both the older and younger can play, without the older being annoyed at the younger or the younger getting stuck all the time.

        • @catbarf: Thanks catbarf1. We already have a Nintendo Wii and PS2 with (wait for it) an EyeToy. Are Wii U games compatible with the Wii? The 5 y.o. are still OK with playing with the Wii.

Our older one has friends who have even older siblings and their household have XB1. So it is becoming a peer pressure thing to also get the XB1. A lot of the games seems to be MA15+ so I'm a bit wary about that.

According to the sales guy at EB, the XB1 has a wider range of games in terms of age than the PS4. Is this right?

        • @amts:
My pleasure. Wii U games are not compatible with Wii as they are different generational systems.

That is probably true with XB1 but I only have a small collection. Not sure what younger audience games they have though.

Pretty good deal for Xbox $366 (dont forget cashrewards!) with 3 games but no kinect https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/219066

        • @catbarf: yes saw that one. Hesitated and now sold out.

      • +1

It's worth the extra $20 to not have to deal with standing in queues at a store launch.

    • Games really aren't worth much. The 2 assassins creed maybe $30 if you're lucky and $10 for the dance game maybe

I want a microsoft store in Brisbane!

    • I want one in perth

      • +1

        I want one in Warrawong

        • +1

… so you can buy all the stuff of ebay after it's cleaned out?

          @lupiter:

          Nah….. I know a mate! ;)

      • Now I've had just about enough of you three.
        "I want" never gets!

Now if you're good and you ask nicely, maybe your mother and I will take you to look around the Apple store.

  • If any one wants to get rid of the Kinect sensor I'm happy to pay $75 pickup

  • Anyone knows if we can get 10% student discount on launching day at MS store by showing Student ID?

    • +1

Don't trust that 'Anyone'. The store isn't open yet and there is no details on anything else except the one mentioned by OP.

    • I don't know about student - but they did price match.

      • Ok thanks. MS should be able to price match their own student discount webpage then =D

  • OP never heard of a Lumia 645XL
    ..more like a 640XL :)

    • haha yes, you're right. :)

  • Dick Smith had the 640XL for around $240 a short while back with a coupon code.

ryanhunt was absolutely spot on with this deal! I went in today and scored a great deal on the Xbox One. 500gb; Kinect, headset, and controller included; and, 5 games —all for $399.00. Thanks Microsoft and thanks ryanhunt!! I wouldn't have known this grand opening was on if you had not highlighted it.

    • nice! What 5 games did you get? I didn't get that deal!!!

      • I got :
        Kinect rivals
        Mine craft
        Sunset overdrive
        Dance central
        Zoo tycoon

      • I got the same games as lippy, except Killer Instinct in place of Sunset Overdrive. My son will be happy.

    • Same here, thanks Ryanhunt! Got this awesome deal today. The Microsoft store was a nightmare to walk through, service was slow, packed and cramped but given it's their first day only.

      • The staff didn't seem to know what products were on sale or what exactly was being offered. I was told I could buy a 1tb for $399, but only the 500gb was on sale at that price. The 1tb wasn't on sale at all, apparently. I didn't expect the games; the POS staff gave me that bonus.

At the end of the purchase, I was happy. Let's hope they sort themselves out for day 2 onward … for their sake anyway :-)
