New Nvidia Shield Tablet Now $199 USD

What was already hands down the most powerful tablet (at the expense of other things such as screen quality), the Nvidia Shield Tablet, has been released as a new model with a price drop: $199 USD (16GB Wifi)

However it's largely the same hardware in a largely the same package. ;) You can still use the wierdo pretend active stylus but it must be bought seperately and there's no holder in the new Shield Tablet. Arguably the old model is better … and presumably we're gonna see pricedrops on that now \o/

(I disagree with the review, if you don't game there's a plethora of better options that fix the plethora of weak points this tablet has. Saying "buy this over any 7" tablet full stop" (it's 8 inches BTW which points to the reviewers knowledge possibly lel) is terrible advice.

  • I'm pretty sure the Nokia is similar

    • Also Xiaomi Mipad. Nokia doesn't have the tegra, must of confused it with the Mipad

  • For Australian's the new model isn't really that much more cheaper than the original model. Because since the first model came out the dollar has dropped considerably. $199 US = ~$280 aud, the original model was around $330 aud shipped from Amazon at time of release. So you may save what? Around $30 but then you also missing out on charger and stylus.

The Mipad is inferior to the nvidia shield tablet, the soc used is the same but the Mipad has been found to be a lot worse at dissipating heat thus overheats and throttles a lot more. Also it lacks gps, and is 4:3 AR.

Someone if they don't play games and just want a tablet for most Android apps is probably better with a nexus 7 2013 model or the laggy tab s. Even with gaming, games are developed for the lowest capable device and don't take advantage of the extra gpu power that the tegra k1 has. And the ones that are available are mostly old pc ports like hl2 and doom 3.

The shield tablet screen isn't its weakness, it's just as good as any other tablet at it's price point and isn't that much worse than tablets like the iPad Air 2 for that matter. The biggest weakness is the bulky size, 400gram+ weight, poor battery life, questionable build quality and quality control. Mind you the nexus 7 was probably much worse in terms of quality control and at a similar price.

The strengths are that Nvidia support their devices, unlike other manufactures like Samsung or Asus etc. it'll get marshmallow and might even get Android N. Nvidia has also been pretty decent with after sales support and have even gone to the lengths of replacing every tablet after discovering a battery issue. They even replaced people's tablets in countries that the tablet was never released in.
