  • Oneplus X (online grey purchase only though). If you want to locally purchase, then a Moto X 2014 from JBHIFI will do you well (camera not great though).

  • cheer I like the oneplus 2 , but the size is just too much, I will look at it

xperia Z3 compact. Best small android phone I've owned. Close to stock android experience with real 2 day battery life and fast charging.

Another positive for the Moto X 2014, great phone.

  • There's the Xiaomi Mi4, which is $320 AUD after conversion. Came out last year. No card slot, non removable battery. Specs

It has been replaced with the Mi4C, which runs an updated Snapdragon 808. 5" display, 1080p, 3GB of RAM, again no SD card slot and the battery is not removable.

    $380+ AUD after conversion.

Then the Google Nexus 5x? would be $500 from various stores. This is however a 5.2" device.

  • What specs are you after at a minimum?

    • main things would be 2gb ram min, 32g rom or expandable memory , decent battery life.

  • Z3 compact is great but not perfect. You can get a barely used one for 350-400 and new one for under 500 on eBay. Great specs, connectivity and has one of the most impressive battery life in the market. This phone is extremely underrated which is good because I plan to snag one off eBay for cheap.

The only negative is that dropping it can destroy the screen and brick the phone. I have also heard complaints that the glass doesn't handle heat generated from the chip set and cracks by itself. This phone is slept on though.

The oneplus series have amazing specs and prices but suffer from sub par to unreliable network connections. You may not have any issues but it is troubling .

Overall best is ….yup…. The LG G4 H815. Decent specs, great connectivity, support and price is around 540-550. Hopefully another deal will bring the price down to 450. I find this phone very big which is why I'd rather have a oneplusx or z3 compact.

    • OP clearly stated he wanted a phone with a screen size of 5 inches or smaller. The LG G4 is a 5.5 inch screen, so should not be recommended to the OP.

  • What carrier are you with? Some of the options for example miss out on the B5 850MHz LTE which is important if you are with Vodafone so knowing the carrier would help narrow down the field

    • I'm with vaya/optus ATM.

  • Grey import Nexus 5x is almost hitting the $500 mark. 5.2" screen - only a little over :)

  • Moto G 3rd Gen.

Easily one of the best phones under $400.

2GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, micro SD expandable, 5" screen, very good battery life, waterproof, good quality cameras, etc.

    Xperia Z2, Locked to Vodafone.

It may be .2" bigger than your asking size, but damn, that's a good price for an Aussie stock.

  • my shortish list is

    Sony Xperia m4 Aqua
    Sony Xperia Z3 Compact
    Sony Xperia M5
Sony Xperia Z5 Compact (price is a bit much)
    Motorola Moto G (3rd)
    Xiaomi Mi 4c
    Oneplus x
    Oppo R7 lite

any bad isssues known on any of these phones, any stand out good features.

    • With that Shortlist, list how much you can buy it for. Would give you a better idea of your needs. Of that bunch I have the z3 only and the thing I most dislike is that the water flap needs to be opened all time to charge. Later I bought a magnetic charger so no more worries.

  • Speculative options include:

5.0 inch BLUBOO XTOUCH Android 5.1 Lollipop 4G for $322.
    Specs look pretty good.

For a budget alternative, DOOGEE X5.

They also have this Lenovo A399 but lower specs again + only 480P.

I'm not plugging this site. I get daily emails from them (bought a cable from their eBay account a while back).

  • mrfather:

I've just researched phones in this price range for myself for the past month or so…

I was comparing the Sony's with the Motorola Moto G 3rd Gen.

I read a review of one of the Sony's - I believe it was the Xperia M4 Aqua - which was quite critical of this model…

They tested the cameras and said the quality level was disappointing for a phone in this price range and I believe they complained about "lagginess" in the general operation of the phone which they were disappointed in considering the CPU it has…

    Don't ask me which review it was - I don't remember…

Just giving you a tip-off to investigate further if you wish…

  • If you don't care for updates etc, Xperia Z Brand new can be found on gumtree or ebay (People who bought it for $60 via recent dick smith deals are selling it on gumtree) for around $130-$150…Phone is 5" and updated with Android Lollipop….Nice device…I have used it in the past….and trying to grab it from Gumtree..

  • Ended up buying m5 on eBay for $334. New, opened.

    Thanks for help

  • Well done :-)

    No problem.
