This morning AVG Free updated and ever since then the program has a permanent Remote address, with IP:193.85.216.234 connected to my PC. I find this unsettling, as I don't why an AVG server needs to always be connected, never use to be. Anyone know why AVG needs this connection and should I be concerned, also can I disable it?

It's very basic though. A few years ago it was good, but it's been dropping down lately.
I use Malawarebytes Pro for the serious stuff. Most bugs are of that nature these days
That's the way. One of the few products that will actively block a zero day before an update is out to remove it.
The IP address is of Czech origin — not that suspicious since AVG is headquartered in Prague. So I guess it could be a some kind of license activation server, or maybe the server is responsible for pushing out daily virus definition file updates.
You can probably ask AVG tech support what it is to find out, but otherwise the simplest way is to simply block it using Windows Firewall?
Thanks for all the advice. I did ask AVG tech support but they didn't want to help me and evading the question, all the person wanted to do was sell me their products. So I was thinking trying out Panda, Avast or Microsoft Security Essentials.
Malwarebytes + Avast is what I use, and it works really well.
Yes, Malwarebytes is a great program. I use the free version and even though it's not real time protection, it still works well for me. I saw a lifetime license for Malwarebytes for $15AU yesterday, Which is a good deal. I'm going to try Kaspersky Internet Security 2016, it's only $8AU at the moment. If that doesn't work well for me I will try out the Avast and Malwarebytes combination and see how I go.
