negative reviews? i fly with them all the time, always found them pretty good. think its also one of the better airlines out there http://www.worldairlineawards.com/Awards/worlds_best_airline…

      • +15

Online reviews are super suspect for airlines.

        Check out China Southern - 1512 reviews. 4.6 / 5 average LOL
        http://www.productreview.com.au/p/china-southern-airlines.ht…
100x more reviews than any other airline. just about all of them 5 stars. Read for a laugh.
Having had the displeasure of flying with China Southern twice now. I can assure you they're one of the worst.

Next best is Singapore Airlines 183 reviews 3.6 5 average.
Then you have China Eastern 11 reviews 1.8 average. China eastern is pretty much the same as China Southern, except that shanghai is better to transit through than Guangzhou.

Cathy Pacific on the other hand is a great airline, excellent econ and premium econ class. However, I've had a few delays at Hong Kong airport, not at bad as mainland chinese airports. But be careful if you're using these flights to connect on a separate ticket, give yourself plenty of time.

        • Won't fly with any China airline…just don't trust them…

        • +1

          @pearl2013:
probably the only reason to fly southern is due to the direct flight into guangzhou

        • +6

          @pearl2013:

With a Chinese airline or China Airlines?
Technically not the same.. unless you… ok I won't say it. lol.

        • @pearl2013: Neither me, but sometimes there is no choice :(

I'll certainly never pick them based on fare. It's a false economy because if anything goes wrong with delays, cancellations or baggage, they will not help.

        • +2

So I've flown on them at least 4 times, since I use them to get back to China and they have the best flying times. Not once have I had a bad experience, worst was my flight once got delayed by 2 hours going to Guangzhou but that was smog problems. So I've flown them at least 2 times more than you which means your experiences are now invalid and I'm right =D

But seriously flying an airline twice, you can't assume they are one of the worst. Seats are a bit small, foods pretty good, prices are great and service is pretty good. Guangzhou airport can be a pain….but that's not the airlines fault now is it. I can assure you they are not Emirates however.

On topic, Cathay is great, I've flown them twice on a trip to/fro China and great service and carrier. Only bad thing is watch out for your flight from Hong Kong into China. If they swap you to Dragonair, the carry on luggage technically changes from 7kg to 5kgs. I don't think they ever check but just a heads up.

        • +5

          so many great reviews

"Brad" and picture of a motorbike and then speaking in broken English

everyone giving it 5 stars in the last few days and having only ever done one review.

Guess they went out and bought a sugar load of reviews somewhere.

        • +3

@illumination: I would call CX a Hong Kong airline and their pilots are trained in Adelaide. :)

        • @Ryugen: Read only the reviews that are well written, or even only from people with >1 review. Probably paints a pretty accurate picture of the airline and commensurate with my experience. But i'm glad yours was ok.

That's why i'll pick CX anyday.

        • +1

          @pearl2013:
China Southern in fact operates a training centre in WA and pilots are all trained by Oz.
          http://www.cswafc.com.au/

        • @baoluo: Same with China Eastern. http://www.heraldsun.com.au/leader/south-east/chinas-finest-…

But not all of their pilots.

Regarding the fake votes and reviews…

Probably the Chinese 50 Cent brigade in action: https://youtu.be/SFdr4gWsGog

        • @pearl2013: What a troll.

        • I agree with you that Guangzhou airport isn't up to scratch in a lot of ways. But to say China Southern is one of the worst is nothing further from the truth out of my experience flying all of those airlines, Australian, European, Americana or Asian. I don't like China Southern simply because of their strategy of attracting more passengers through low prices, which means it's packed on pretty much every flight in or out of Sydney, which guarantees a bad experience with kids crying, people talking etc etc. As for their service, not the best for sure, won't be the worst whatsoever. Actually you gotta take all the reviews with a grain of salt but it won't be as bad as you make it out to be.

        • -1

@Makoto: Broken English means untrustworthy? You'd better stay in Australia all your life to avoid being fooled.

        • @ryu: try reading what I said mate, if you can't read clear English then maybe ask someone to help you.

If you look at the review site (which you clearly haven't) you'll see they use faces of white people with generic names and then ridiculous comments that is in Chinglish.

there is not one review there giving it 5 stars that isn't from a group of fake Chinese manipulators.

        • @inose:

          What's with the down votes?

Sensitive Chinese in action, like their sensitive government?

          http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-china-34941687

I think some Chinese are taking this airline issue a bit too personally…

        • @ryu: you may also get fellow-passengers who try to open the emergency exit door midflight!

    • +2

They are pretty good. Probably 2nd best compare to Singapore airline. Fly with them once a year to HK.

    • +1

Service in the plane is good. For me, the negatives are with check-in. For my last flight, I could not check in online because of some obscure error. Ended up on the phone with a support phone number at 0:30am, who put me on hold for a long time and was unable to really help. Phoned again another time, and they said they could not do anything, and told me to "keep my fingers crossed" when I go to the airport. My response was "are you serious?!!!!!"
It ended up okay, but my inability to check in online meant we had the worst seats. I was disappointed that I had a problem which they neither understood, nor could resolve. Who wants to go to the airport with their "fingers crossed" after spending half a year preparing a holiday?

    • +1

      They're pretty good.

    • +1

Flew with them once, Vancouver-HK-BKK. Service on par with others, seats were the one-piece hardshell type, back doesn't recline independently, i.e. the seat slides as well, when you recline. Not sure if these type of seats are on other routes. Nowadays, I find many full-service airlines service has dropped to budget airlines standard! Recent long haul flights on Air NZ (Auckland-LAX) and Etihad (Dublin-Abu Dhabi-Sing) were very impressive.

    • +2

That's a lots of negs for just asking for opinion. I up-voted you to help you balance out the votes.

    • +2

I flew with them to Japan in October and had no complaints. One of the planes was pretty squashy compared to other carriers, but the plane for the other leg was fine. Service, entertainment and food was good.

    • +2

I flew with them early on in the year…. i didnt mind it.

My flight was delayed in Sydney and I was going to miss the connection from HNG to PEK they gave me the option of either catching a South China flight but would get to PEK at 11pm OR putting me up in a hotel in HNG and a flight the next day. I took the latter.

imo they did the best they could for me.

  • can i have the exact $653 dates for HK from Melb?

    Can't find any at all!

    • +1

From Melbourne, the cheapest is $694. I have found leaving on 4 May, 10 May, 11 May and returning in 1-2 weeks time on any day except for Saturday will give you that fare.

My guess is that the best bet would be to leave/return on Tuesday/Wednesdays

      • Good on you…no cheap flight from Adelaide (tried May to June)…may need to detour to Singapore to do some shopping at the airport… :(

      • thanks i m trying to find ones for Sep/Oct

  • +1

Can't find any cheap flight ADL to Hk in June….all around $900 to $1k… :o

    • ADL to HK 23/05—19,21,23/06

      • Thanks. No good for me those dates…

  • +4

Is this a real deal? Don't see any cheap flight. Singapore airline is doing similar price…what's the special price you talking about?

    • +2

Is this the same crappy deal we had last time from CX? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/213639

Advertising "FROM" with virtually no availability except for a couple of dates in the very large date range?

      • +2

That's how they make you realize that is not a deal, more like a news.

      • Just tried a whole bunch of dates in April and found nothing.

Really should make a complaint to the ACCC or something. Surely they can't be allowed to do that.

  • Any premium economy / business class deals?

    • nvm - I should've just clicked through…

  • +2

    Sigh,,,,need japan deal

    • There are cheap ways to fly to Japan via Cathay if you don't mind the following…

      1. Changing in HK Airport
      2. Gambling on buying flights a couple of months in advance.

You can try looking on the Fanfares website which release cheap tickets a couple months in advance. You're not guaranteed it will fly where you want when you want but you can get some really cheap flights.

For e.g. HK to Narita for $2590 HKD return.

If you're fortunate enough ~$700 AUD to HK and ~$450 HK to JP.

      edit: The Fanfares website
      https://www.cathaypacific.com/cx/en_HK/latest-offers/flights…

      • I got $700 AUD return via HK from Perth-Tokyo, Osaka-Perth in Oct 2015 with Cathay. Only bought a few months in advance during a sale.

    • -1

cebu pacific sydney to manila direct return $149 and then manila to tokyo or osaka for ~200 return

    • this is a good deal for Japan
You will have to change flights at HK or you can select to have a stopover in HK (do a multi-city search instead for a stopover)

I flew from Sydney to Osaka (via HK) and stopover HK for few days on the way back last Sep - around $700

Booked at the last sale for the same route and is about the same price $700.

$700 return on a full service flight, that's a great deal
although luggage allowance is a bit short with only 20kg

  • +12

I just want to say thanks for an official Cathay rep for posting on here - its good to see :)

  • So sad. No promo during March 25 period

    • They had a even better deal for Jan - Mar before. Not sure Easter holiday period was blacked out or not though.

  • Cant see any promo fare in Nov 2016

  • I am hopping to see some sale from China to MEL.

  • Any deals to Europe?

  • any deals for sydney to HK? all the prices i see are 1,000+

nvm bascially all the deals in april are 1000+ anytime after you see the sub 700 prices

  • Decent fares to Korea during May. Thanks OP.

  • $789 per person Perth-Tokyo return on Economy. Is this good value for full-serviced Airline to Japan? Or do you think I should wait for better deal? Planning on going in November, 2 adults 1 child. I'm quite new with Japan fares.

    • Paid $500 per person for Perth-Tokyo on AirAsia (fly via Malaysia) when they had sales on. Jetstar have similar sales but Perth is sometimes not included. Difference is Jetstar have direct flights.

I would say it's a decent price for a full-service airline even if you have go to through Hong Kong.

      • Thanks mate! I didn't realize it was stopover at Hong Kong.

  • +1

    1 ad, 0 deals.

  • Yes, it's a good deal with a fairly good services airline, but the 20kg baggage allowance is just unacceptable when other airlines (e.g. Qantas and Singapore Airlines) allows 30kg on Y class!!! It's also unhelpful when ground staff gone extremely strict on this as well!

Also, meals are getting smaller and smaller in size, with no or limited snacks loaded on flights.

Cathay, it's time to review your position, do you want to be a cheap ass budget airline? Or you would like be a world class premium airline?

If you continue to be a cheap ass airline, your loyal Marco Polo Club member like me will eventually go to other airlines!

I am from HK and fly at lease twice with you guys from Austrslia to Asia or Europe per year (I know that's not a lot). I would love to support this HK based airline, but every time I fly with CX, you guys disappoint me a bit more and I am getting to a point that I am thinking to jumping ship to another airline.

  • I don't think that the deal is that great, but +1 for an official rep even posting here. Perhaps an even better deal next time?

  • Got $684 SYD - BKK late July, even flying home on a Saturday. No Friday Saturday outbound flights in the weeks I looked at, but there are late night Thursday flights available. There seem to be plenty of available dates in June and late July through August, but other than that the sale fares are sparse.

The special is for a restricted economy class - cannot choose your own seats and the flights you can choose is restricted. Of the five or six daily flights in/out of Sydney, I had a choice of one or two. We face the potential of being separated on any of the four flights, and increased risk of "scoring" middle seats. (I'd normally pay to avoid that fate.) Baggage allowance is only 20Kg for all CP economy fares.

I know I could have waited and possibly gotten Emirates on sale for $50 or $100 more, and that would be a direct flight (six hours quicker with three hours less flying time), with 30Kg of baggage and choose our own seats. But the Emirates 777s are a cramped 10 abreast in economy, whereas Cathay's are still nine abreast and their A330s still eight abreast. (There are rumours they are considering a change to the more cramped configs though.) Mostly I want to "sample" Cathay before choosing an airline for future Euro trips.

  • My Mom had some bad experience with onboard cabin crew when she traveled from HK to Brisbane a couple of years ago. She's nearly 60 and 150cm tall, and it was difficult for her to lift the luggage to the overhead storage. So she asked a nearby crew member to help her. The crew said to my Mom: "I will help you only this time!" and then put the luggage in overhead storage with a cold face. I was angry when I heard it. My Mom was too kind to note down her name or employee ID, otherwise I would definitely complain about this, totally unacceptable.

  • Is it possible to change the origination/destination return fare the other way around? (EG: HK to MLB return).

If not, could I pay a 'fare change' fee later to switch the dates?

Appreciate any thoughts on the matter…
