Best ADSL2+ Internet Providers That Are Decent All around

Our iPrimus 24 month contract just ran out.
Since we wont be getting NBN anytime soon and iPrimus has crappy speeds and reliability we're looking for a better Internet provider at a good price. We live in Tasmania, What are your thoughts?

  • Unless you are exceptionally close, like 500m close, to the exchange I would try and go for cable if it's available (enter your/your neighbours addresses at the relevant cable broadband pages for Telstra & Optus). ADSL is a poor cousin to cable or fibre.

If you ain't in an NBN area the cable options are Telstra (if they built a cable years ago), Optus (ditto cable years ago) or no cable. You may have access to non-NBN fibre, I'm not sure how that operates atm.

Failing this you will unfortunately be left with ADSL and honestly asking for a "decent" telco is like asking for a virgin in a house of ill repute but I would carefully investigate what is available at whirlpool.net.au 's broadband comparison engine and then possibly read some recent threads in the relevant forums.

From my personal ADSL experience I recommend avoiding Exetel due to terrible service levels and Telstra due to price and the terrible sales process (I am currently in a TIO brokered dispute with Telstra … full disclosure fwiw lol).

I would recommend TPG as they have competitive prices and seem to come out on top for many 3rd party service tests (eg. Netflix, torrents) - if you want streaming video particuarly avoid Exetel (poor Netflix rating, about 50% median position, perhaps understandable for a budget ISP) and Telstra (shockingly bad Netflix rating, way below 50% and for Australia's largest ISP only understandable as being on purpose to "encourage" you to buy Foxtel or Presto or whatver the jerkoffs are offering now - they can hardly argue that they're worse than Exetel due to being in the terrible position of no wholesale bandwidth etc.)

  • No Foxtel or Optus Cable in Tassie I reckon. (happy to be corrected if I'm wrong)

What is your line Sync rate (from your modem)?
And what are the real world speeds you're seeing (eg from Speedtest.net)

ADSL speed is reduced by length of the telephone line from the exchange. This is a fact of life that no ISP can fix.
It could well be that your service with iPrimus is as good as it is possible to get.

Telstra, Internode, iiNet, TPG are the "quality" ISP's in descending order. iPrimus would have to be pretty close to next on the list.

  • I like Exetel but others would object because they did a dirty move by jacking up prices. Since then they did a backflip though and the prices are low again.

  • Never had any issues with TPG.. Mine is effectively ADSL2+ provided by Telstra but resold by TPG.
