  • Seems like an ok price…hmmm wonder if it hassle free playing mkv's with 5.1 passthrough.

EDIT: mmm doubtful after some quick searching on the kodi fourums

  • Are these things able to play videos using AC3 audio now?

    • +2

Thats a software problem. Kodi can decode ac3, but you should just send it to your amp, via hdmi or spdif.
Anyway, it is in the specs. Dolby = ac3.

How real is the 4K? Is it rendered at 720p or 1080 and upscaled?
Thats what happens with the similar-looking X2, also advertised as decoding 4K and outputting 4K. Just doesn't mention what happens in between :-)

      • CNX did a video testing various formats with a similar box.

The X2 is powered by Allwinner's H3 that has a weaker CPU and GPU.

        • That demo appears to be down-converting and upconverting. Which just goes to show that people cannot tell the difference anyway.

To get "true 4K" you'd have to go into Android settings and change the framebuffer to 4K. If it is possible.
It would be interesting (academically) to see if that works.

  • What happened to the inverted JV avatar?

    • +1

I retired it long ago and had a JV-TA hybrid. I'm looking for something new now.

  • Shame it only has a Mali-450 GPU, but I suppose you get what you pay for.

    • The Pentacore Mali-450 isn't too bad actually. Handles stuff like Beach Buggy Racing on max settings at 1080p quite well. The GPU in the new Amlogic S912 is rumoured to be far more powerful. Otherwise, you'd best look for an RK3288 device.

  • nice one.. considering retiring my first gen amazon firetv due to it struggling with software decoding of even a 720p x265 HEVC. I see this has hardware HEVC decoding, upto what resolution and bitrate?
Also interested in the 4K output, ive seen a few claim 4K but in actual fact only output at 1080p. Decoding 4k is pointless if your limited to 1080p output.

    • 10-bit HEVC video playback up to 2160p

  • where do these ship from?
and how long will shipping take to aus typically?

    • They ship from Shenzhen, China. Free shipping typically takes 3 weeks, but can take up to 30 days.

  • +1

I really wanted to buy one of these Chinandroid boxes but got put off by various playback bugs and the non existent updates. Went for the Nvidia Shield and called it a day.

    • +1

I did some heavy research a month ago on boxes and came to the same conclusion. Got burnt on a china tablet in the past, get what you pay for.

  • Im finding my chromecast is lagging with plex on my 4k tv, does anyone know if this might be better solution?

    • Depends if it's lagging on the Chromecast processing, or is due to slow comms from the server (wifi?) or Plex Server not having sufficient grunt to transcode.

Are you actually viewing 4K content? If not, you need to keep the resolution down so it's not upscaling.

I've avoided Plex since it adds so many layers of complexity to something that is inherently simple (read a file directly from another network drive).

      • My wifi is pretty fast so I'm assuming its just the chromecast working overtime to fill the whole 4k screen. Chromecast is perfect on my 32inch 1080p screen, but just cant seem to handle upscaling to 55inch 4k res. Really hoping a tv box with more muscle than a chromecast will give me seamless play from my local plex server.

        • Chromecast does not do 4K.
It should be sending a 1080p signal and your tv upscaling.
Press "display" or similar on the tv to see what the input signal is.

I've avoided Plex since it adds so many layers of complexity

Maybe he can turn off the transcoding in plex?

        • My wifi is pretty fast

You are dreaming if you think anything is going t9o do 4K (or even 1080p) reliably over WiFi.

Chromecast is perfect on my 32inch 1080p screen, but just cant seem to handle upscaling to 55inch 4k res

The LOCATION of those 2 screens (and Chromecasts) will be the main difference.

Really hoping a tv box with more muscle than a chromecast will give me seamless play from my local plex server.

Highly unlikely. The device either can or it cannot process the streamed data. You have already proved that the Chromecast has enough "grunt" because it works with your 32" at 1080p.

If it was me, I'd be putting in a Ethernet cable. Alternatively, a separate dedicated WiFi link (different SSID) just for that 4K screen.

    Similar box running same chip.

It's good hardware in that the chip is new and fast and very capable…the biggest issue is that software updates and support can often be you main concern.

I doubt a random Chinese box will get good ongoing Support.

    • It's good hardware in that the chip is new and fast and very capable…the biggest issue is that software updates and support can often be you main concern.

Part of the price difference. MINIX have very good support and release regular updates. Products that are discontinued still receive community updates and are occasionally incorporated into official updates.

The downside is that MINIX control the price on their products, so it's hard to offer discounts, but we do have a promotion going for $129.90 with a better remote or controller included.

      • I just posted the link as information on a similar S905 powered device will be relevant to anyone buying this.

Do you know if this box has a custom Kodi? i.e. the video files will be played via Kodi internal player and not a special external player.

        • It's not using a custom KODI.

    • these Chinese boxes are all generic and you interchange different brands of firmware I put the tronsmart 5.1 on another box and worked fine …… but will be selling mine to get an Intel version with Windows 10 …. then I can run more apps besides what the google play shop has.

fine if you just want kodi Netflix and some other apps and turn a dumb tv into a smart tv . torrent clients on android all seem to be cut down versions compared to Windows 10 versions.

  • Bum, I brought the MXIII just yesterday for the same price.

    • It's not too late to cancel and order this ;)

  • OK found the forum where all the boxes sporting this chip are discussed http://freaktab.com/forum/tv-player-support/amlogic-based-tv…

MXQ pro is found under "other" which is probably a hint of how much support this generic chinese box will get.

Im tempted to buy this just to have a play around with it but only because I have backup media player to keep the wife happy.

    • A lot of boxes with the same specifications can have other firmware flashed ontop with minimal or no issues. Stock Firmware is available to download if anything goes wrong.

      • +1

yep that is how I got mine off 4.4.4 to 5.1

  • anyone read anything about heat with these boxes? seems to be the main concern with the Chinese boxes - unexpected shutdowns due to poor heat dissipation is a possibility with these types of cheap boxes.

Tempted though, Amazon seems to have a number of good reviews for it.

Also just realised the site says KODI 16 - now I'm a little concerned about that - is it using the nightlies Beta? I'd prefer if they just used KODI 15 which is on the app store. I suppose I can just uninstall and install the stable version of KODI.

    • +1

you can load whatever version of kodi you want …….

heat isn't an issue have 2 and they work fine……

      don't buy 802 versions ….. no android 5.1

      • I don't think it's that simple.

Kodi has to be modified/updated to make the most of the specific S905 chip otherwise it won't run very well.

        • kodi are releasing on Intel first and then on arm ….. so the choice is do you want or buy a$110 mini PC and get latest versions or a $60 android box ……. that's one of the reasons why I'm selling my androids and going with mini PC and Windows 10.

still good value at $60 for a tv box does 1080p fine but I have never tried surround sound, just stereo via hdmi to the tv.

        • @garage sale:

I would have built an intel based HTPC a long time ago but they dont pass the wife test.

For years I was happy with my popcorn hour A100, A200 and then A300 but they have really old style OS and dont run Kodi.

I ran a Rockchip based Android box for a while but the software updates and support wasnt great and wasnt keeping up with Kodi/Android releases.

I suspect this S905 box will be exactly the same…zero/poor support…will never work to its full capability.

        • @garage sale: Link to $110 Mini PC?

  • This s905, or the older a9 based s802?

Is 1gb enough or is 2gb a must?

    Minecraft pe?

    • It's S905.

1GB is enough for media playback, but 2GB is better suited for more intensive games.

Minecraft PE can run on this device, but you'd probably need a controller though.

  • One of the limitations of Android, and so thus these android TV boxes, atm is that it does not support any formats higher than DTS or Dolby Digital Plus, so DTS-HD and Dolby True are not supported

  • Pick the Right Kodi Box (updated Jan. 2016)

    http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=252916

    • thanks for the link.

Might pickup a wetek core when it comes back in stock. $150ish AUD for it seems great since it's pretty similar to the minix X-8H+

  • I'm seeing reviews that youtube and netflix apps on these android boxes can only max deliver 720p as the device is detected as an android mobile, anyone know first hand?

  • Not sure if I should buy this or a RPi 2. I mainly want to run Kodi / OpenELEC

    Help me choose! :)

  • Hi OP,

I ordered one based on reading it support AV out. However, I received the item and found, though there is a 3.5mm socket at the back labeled as AV, but there is no AV cable supplied. How can I connect this to the AV input?

    • male to male 3.5mm to RCA cable should do it.

      • I thought there is not a standard for this type of cable. Isn't it?
