Telstra $5 data share sim - doesn't work in mobile handset

I thought I would bring to others attention something that I found out during the week.

My wife and I have plans with Telsra that include 14GB of data. I thought we could get the $5 data share sim and put it in some old iphone 5s's we had for the kids and they could facetime us while out and about.ot provide ac

I got the Sim's from Telstra and tried to facetime and also Skype and then got the following text from Telstra:

This SIM card does not provide access to mobile data when used in a mobile handset. To access mobile data please place this sim card into a mobile broadband device , tablet or other data only device. To access mobile data on this device with thie SIM card please contact Telstra.

Just thought I would save someone else the hassle.

Was all good though, Telstra cancelled the $5 Sim charge and converted the SIMs to prepaid for me.

  • How strange. I can see the sense in restricting a phone plan to a phone, but restricting a data sim to a data device is strange as a phone will likely use less data.
