Need mobile/internet data for 3 months, what's the cheapest option?

I have recently moved to a new rental unit, and will only stay until mid-May when my contract ends. The unit is in Launceston, and only NBN is available here. I have just finished at 24 month Telstra ADSL bundle at my previous place.
I would like internet, but all the plans that are month-to-month require a connection fee of $100+, as well as the purchase of an NBN modem (which I don't have), which is another $50-$100, as well as the monthly fee of at least $50 for the data/internet. The cheapest I've seen is TPG at a minimum of $180 for the first month.
So all I have now is my Vaya $18/month 1.5GB data to go with, which works very well on 4G but not enough. I do not need heaps of data, just enough to surf web pages. I don't watch videos regularly and don't need downloads. I could probably go by with 300-400MB per day, and maybe less as I can use the internet at work as well.
Only my mobile device is compatible with a Sim Card. I have tablets but non-sim compatible. I'd use the internet mainly for my computer at home, so that one device is the most important to me.

I do not know too much about this stuff so would like your advice on the cheapest and best options? Would a USB dongle be best? A small 4G wifi modem with a plan for 3-4 months? Or prepaid?

  • Thre was an amaysim promo, which i'm on… 3 months for like $10? 5gb data, no contract…

  • Does your new place has NTD installed?
If yes, then you can try Skymesh. You can have NBN with no contract.
NBN doesn't need a modem. You can use any router or modem/router, even from your old ADSL modem/router.
NTD will/can be installed for free from NBN co.

For mobile, Optus currently have 10GB for $50/Month (no contract) SIM only plan.

    • Yes, I do have the NTD installed. I have tried plugging it in and the power lights come on. This is inside the unit.
What I can't find though, is the NBN "utility box" which is meant to be outside. If I have the NBN connection box inside, then I shouldn't I definitely have the utility box somewhere outside?

Oh great, I've been trying to see research if I needed a new router - I'm not sure. I have the Belkin N300 right now, which we've been using without issue for 3+ years. Do you know if that will work?

I will have a look at SkyMesh. Thanks for that!

      • Do you know if that will work?

        Yes it will.
Just contact your ISP for more details on how to set it up.

  • Thanks for your help.
Turns out I'm in a multi-dwelling unit so no individual outside utility box.

Went with Belong NBN in the end, where it's only a $60 fee for a modem (can't choose to not have it, they'll still charge you the $60) and then you pay monthly.
Looked at Skymesh which seems like a great option but a few people here recommended Belong so went with them! Still gotta wait a few more days until it gets connected though.
