Before all the idiots come in here complaining about the "health effects" of energy drinks, this is a bargain website, not a health forum. Go back to watching Today Tonight (and drinking your identical coffee) and leave us alone.

  • Hi everyone,
I thought I should let you know a little about "Energy Drinks". These drinks are actually stimulants and have a very high dose. Being from a medical background, I thought I should share some information with all of you.
I think such drinks should "only" be consumed if necessary. We shouldnt have a habbit like, sitting on a couch and consuming them.

These drinks can cause a serious heart condition/arrhythmia (Supraventricular Tachycardia) that can have debilitating effects on people. People will underlying conditions can get aggravated and can lead to death even. Many people are usually unaware of some of the heart conditions related to heart rhythm.

Liz Applegate, PhD, a sports nutritionist at the University of California at Davis, maintains that the boost associated with energy drinks comes mainly from the caffeine and, therefore, the use of energy drinks by athletes is a poor idea. Despite these concerns, many energy drink companies specifically target athletes and sporting venues in their marketing efforts. Red Bull, in particular, has been active in providing sponsorship for sports such as NASCAR, and it has purchased a professional men's soccer team and renamed it Red Bull New York.

Here are some of the facts about Caffeiene toxicity:
-Death due to dysrhythmias, seizures, and aspiration of emesis is reported.
-Oral doses of caffeine greater than 10 g can be fatal in adults.

"Caffeine is the world's favorite psychoactive substance." Energy drinks can lead to psychiatric/psychological disorders and symptoms.
"The universal appeal of caffeine is related to its psychostimulant properties. In a healthy person, caffeine promotes cognitive arousal and fights fatigue. These same activating properties can produce symptomatic distress in a small subset of the population. Susceptibility to this symptomatic distress is broadly determined by 3 factors—the dose consumed, individual vulnerability to caffeine, and preexisting medical or psychiatric conditions (mood disorders in particular) that are aggravated by mild psychostimulant use."
I have obtained the above text from a well referenced and reputed source which clinicians around the world access.

I am not trying to scare you guys, but I am just sharing some information, and educating people to make choices that are best for their health. In public health, we call it informed decisions.

Umm, i'm sure most people smart enough to use this site already know the implications for drinking this drink. Look at the first comment from Paintoad. They were spot on the money. Your comment is not needed here as anyone here is capable themselves of looking at the risks of consuming high levels of caffiene.

On a lighter note, got my mate to pick some up, but he actually went to an IGA first. Well they were setting up a big display and obviously hadn't adjusted those standard 8.88 prices. Grabbed an eight pack thinking, this is cheap, don't have to goto coles. Payed and realised the cost was high (had bought a few other things). Went back and explained he though they were 8.88 as that was the price, so they simply refunded the extra amount. :)

Considering this is Melbourne and apparently Coles here are selling them for $5, I was pretty happy with that.

Im pretty sure your essay on Caffeine is not required here. Especially as coffee has about the same if not more caffeine than red bull. I see people drinking up to 8 coffee's a day. And half the world drinks coffee on a daily basis.

Anything in excess, even water, will kill you eventually. If you're an athlete you should be smart enough not to drink Red Bull, if you have a preexisting condition or vulnerability you should definitely be smart enough not to drink it and if your an adult you should be smart enough to follow the instructions on the package. End of Story.

  • Bl@@dy Coles.
    Why exclude the sugar free?
Is it too healthy for your customers!

Found 2 packs of sugar free only to find out that the sale excluded sugar free.

Went back to Safeway to pick up their 2 packs of sugar free for $10.

    • 2 packs? As in 8 Drinks for 10$???

      • Yup.
        2 X Four pack or 8 cans of 250ml V for $10.
