Clipless cycling shoes that I can walk around in

Looking for some cheap cycling shoes that'll take an SPD cleat, but look normal enough for me to walk around a pub in for a few hours (and won't make me sound like a tapdancer).

Any suggestions? Most of what I've seen look like the kind of thing middle-aged couples wear when they go hiking.

  • Only shoes that spring to mind would be 5Tens. Plenty of places have let me & mates in wearing them, they wear comfortably, & depending on what model you go for, look like a fairly stock standard casual shoe. To be fair though, I haven't ridden clipless since I started using Bennies, but I can't say I've noticed anybody tapping or sliding around when walking who do.

  • Check out DZR and Chrome…both make normal looking shoes with a a SPD compatible sole. The clear is recessed so no tap dancing. Only problem is, they aren't cheap….that's the price of fashion I guess.

  • I've just done a bit of research, 20 years too late, after putting up with clipless pedals for 20 years. There is hardly any advantage to clipless pedals or pedal straps over a good old regular flat pedal- for your average joe who is not trying to win a sprint finish of a bike race.

    • Yeah, I kind of agree, at least if you're riding somewhere flat. I've always got on well with clipless on my daily commute though as I usually end up hacking up a steep hill with a couple of heavy-ish panniers on the bike. Seems to make a difference in how I feel when I get to the top.

  • Reynolds are bringing out SPD compatible brogues. Not likely to be cheap, though.

Or have a look at some of these? A little old, but might give you a place to start.

    These are pretty normal looking.

  • Thanks everyone, some good ideas here. Like the look of the Chrome's but the reviews are pretty average. Think I'm going to make Mrs Chickentaste buy me some for my birthday. Maybe she'll buy me the Reynolds, stranger things have happened.
