  • Isn't the Helio X10 faster than the Snapdragon 650? Can anyone explain why the Helio version is the non-pro cheaper version?

    • +3

      SD650 is much much faster.

      • Ah, my bad. I must have been thinking of the 615.

    • Snapdragon has more reputation on mobile cpu compare to mediatek. Most cheap chinese phone are using mediatek cpu which is not as reliable as snapdragon cpu.

      • +3

        reputation yes.. reliable no.
There's nothing unreliable about mediatek chipsets, actually there is unreliable about Snapdragon (I'm looking at you 810!)

For me, the main problem is that mediatek has been really bad at releasing their kernel sources, which makes it impossible for developers to come up with custom roms, you'll find that there are no full custom roms (such as cyanogenmod) for Mediatek devices.

taking this into account with the track record of chinese manufacturer updates, means it won't be long until your phone gets no updates, and you wont be able to go custom rom way either.

that for me is the dealbreaker.

      • Mediatek produces and focuses cheap SoCs, so cheap Chinese phones use Mediatek SoCs because of that.
Snapdragon 810 caused few manufacturers to use Mediatek SoC instead, HTC used Helios on one of their flagship last year etc etc.

I do remember hearing that Qualcomm do not sell modems on their own, and Qualcomm is one of the top runners with modems.
So many telecommunication companies do prefer Qualcomm SoC over other chip makers' (i.e. Galaxy Note 1 had Snapdragon S3 in Korea, because of LTE capability), as a result many phones that are officially released in many countries use Qualcomm chips. At least, that was the explanation I've heard from forums.

    "Notice:
This Android/Windows device is designed to function specifically with the current Android/Windows OS installed on it. Any alterations such as upgrades, modding with custom ROMs, rooting or flashing the Android device with other firmware will automatically void the device's warranty."

Please do not uninstall the spyware on this device.

They write this exact passage on almost every website. JD, Aliexpress, and every other chinese store copy and paste this message everywhere.

It means nothing, if you root your device and install the International ROM from the Xiaomi ROMS depository and un-root it, you've basically restored the device to it's normal out-of-factory configuration.

  • +1

the comments from Chinese XiaoMi users are "good spec, normal quality, bond to need repair after a year…" which is a worry for me

  • I am interested in Elephone Vowney with similar spec but include NFC. Is there any special offer going on? Which one is a better and reliable phone: Elephone Vowney or Xiaomi Note 3. Please advice.

    • I can only advise based on my own research, and what I've picked up from general consensus of opinions, but if you're on the fence between the Vowney and the Note 3, go for the Note 3. Vowney (on paper) has good hardware specs (+higher res, nfc, and more ram), but when compared it is likely that the Xiaomi has: better overall build, and far and away better software support (both internally, and from the community). For me it would be likely for the Note to be more reliable and likely have a longer life expectancy.

    • Elephone…. never again!! From personal experience.

    • Sign up with them and get 5% off instantly.

I preordered mine from them for $320 delivered with express courier delivery via TNT.

      • I think it's only 4% off site-wide code now for new signup. And don't forget 3.2% cashback from cashrewards.

And since this phone will be launched in India in early March, the International ROM should be available then. No more worrying about bloat/spy/crapware on the phone.

        • +1

          Omg i forgot about cashrewards….

        • I was just wondering whether I should hold off for the international version of this phone, but Geekbuying says "Please kindly note that this item will be installed with international firmware before shipped out, with Google play store, Google services and multi-languages. ". I guess I could always do it myself if not, but that's super helpful of them.

    • Be careful buying from Geekbuying. Their customer service isn't the best. They still haven't responded to my brother refund claim, and it been nearly two months.

      • Maybe you should go through Paypal.

I'm so tempted to buy this chinese phone, but I'm worried about the software and quality of this phone. Should I just wait for good deal for s6 or g4? I believe both phone will have price drop soon.

    • +1

You are right, the S6 and G4 prices will be coming down soon. having said that, Xiaomi has built a good reputation for themselves. Decisions, decisions!

  • XIAOMI Redmi Note 3 Pro with Quadcomm Snapdragon 650

    Shouldn't it be Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 ?

  • for that kind of money you could get the auss zenfone 2 with 4GB RAm 32GB ROM dual SIM support 2.3GHZ baytrail processor.

Have this with the 64GB ROM and been very happy with the speed. Love having MIRCO SD support too.

you also get band 28 support so access to the newish 700MHz networks on optus and telstra. reception is great. get full bars in the lift well at work which my old fone was lucky to get 1 bar.

    • +1

Indeed. AS with all the Chinese phones there's pretty limited LTE band support.
Other than that the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro is way better than the Asus Zenfone

  • Does anyone know if the bootloader on these are unlocked? I know the non-pro ones aren't so the attraction of the pro is that they "should" be unlocked but I believe Xiaomi are being a little evasive on this.

    • +2

They are locking the bootloaders on phones newer than the Xiaomi Note 2 series.

The required steps to unlock it is a bit…. complicated. To say the least.

They made it complicated so that online vendors who sell the phone have a harder time of loading viruse'd or Trojan'ed ROMS onto the device.

      • +2

I suppose that makes sense. I only want to be able to root for adblock. I forgot just how invasive ads are after giving my rooted G3 to my wife and having to use an iphone.

I really wish there was an Aussie based vendor who would sell these (like mobileciti) to make warranty a little easier.

  • +1

I know these are well regarded for a cheaper chinese phone, but would you really pay this amount instead of getting an LG G3 for the same or cheaper - faster chipset, much better camera, beautifully accurate screen, very well built and arguably a lot better looking.

The Asus isn't a bad option either, but the G3 is amazing.

    • I think you're right, I was looking at these but now I'm waiting on a 855 G3 to drop below $300.

      • G3 uses a quad-core SOC it can be the limiting factor for some buyers

    • +1

No, Snapdragon 650 would be better than Snapdragon 801.
Snapdragon 650 competes with 808 which is used on LG G4. Not to mention, G3 has QHD screen, which puts fair bit of burden on GPU, compared to FHD.

      http://www.gizmochina.com/2016/01/15/snapdragon-650-vs-helio…

    • Yes, you could get LG G3 or LG G FLEX 2 for ~300AUD delivered. Which I think that LG is a safer bet than Xiaomi

    • Totally.

Very marginal processor difference in the real world vs a much nicer phone all round from LG. I know what my choice would be.

      • this thing has a massive 4100mah battery and 1080p screen. The MIUI software is much nicer than atrocious LG skin

  • Needed a new work phone and ended up getting this from geekbuying instead - Redmi Note 3 Pro 3gb ram, 32gb rom

$334 aud with TNT Express (3-5 days shipping plus insurance). Also went through cashrewards cash back of 3.2% and will be getting back $10 aud. Not bad for a budget phone.

IMO the specs are great and the phone is well received.

From what I read the Asus received some really negative feedback and I'm not a fan of LG products.

  • I just saw the Redmi Note 3 with 3gb /32gb with Snapdragon 650 CPU/ fingerprint scanner/ 4050 mh battery for $238 AUD ( = 12,000 INR) at Xiomi's Indian online outlet. http://www.mi.com/in/note3 DHL will deliver this to Australia in 3-5 days for less than $40 AUD.
So total landed will be $278 from the manufacturer. Before I buy, can someone advise/comment?

    • Great price if true however there's no stock from the site?

Did you end up ordering one?

      • Hello jenovax1,

Thanks for your attention to our product.

Now we have xiaomi note 3 pro in stock. And will post a deal about it soon.
Pls keep an eye for it.

        Have a lovely day!

        Candice
