Sennheiser HD439 Closed-back Over-Ear Headphones - $54 (was $78) @ Harvey Norman

180

HN seems to be clearing these out. These headphones are considered fairly good and are the most preferred in the 4xx series. Good all rounder everyday headphones. Velour pads are more comfortable than pleather ones (for me anyway) and don't get so hot.

Plenty of stock. Out of stock pretty much everywhere at OFW and Good Guys as they have been cleared out it seems.

Edit: There is also a bass mod available here and here supposedly making it the bass king.

Anyone who own these want to comment on the quality?

  • Actually, can someone tell me if these Sennies would be an upgrade from this Sony set:

? Thanks, i would greatly appreciate it !

I can't speak for these particular set of headphones but from my experience Sennheiser are a very good quality brand for headphones.
Whether they're better than the Sony headphones may be subjective as people desire certain things in headphones such as accuracy, bass, comfort, noise cancelling, portability, etc.

    • I bought these today for Dad. He says they are very comfortable. Obviously body is still all plastic but it seems sturdy enough. Cables and pads are modular so you can replace them if anything happens. Sound is quite good and balanced. Check the Golden Ears review to see how the sound scales according to the classification of each. I suspect they are not as bassy as the XB450s you have there but overall they should offer some improvement. I am not an expert though so maybe there are better $50 headphones if you are not in a hurry like Superlux 662 and Takstar 2050.

  • What's the noise isolation like on these? And are they any good for watching movies?

  • Good reviews by people in the know here: http://www.head-fi.org/products/sennheiser-hd-439-headphones

Edit: just noticed you put links in the header.

I have 2 pairs of these, they are for work, to wear in the office and the other pair as a spare, because at this price I can afford it.

The sound quality is very good, very clear. It doesn't have as much bass as I'm used to, but that isn't a bad thing. Good mids for sure. No controls or mic which is a bit of a bummer, but can live without it. Just make sure whatever you are using to listen to music has an equalizer, so you can play with the settings.

It has ok isolation, again, in-ears would be better, but they are decent anyway. Doesn't block out enough noise on Sydney trains, but does a good job at work, and not much sound leak, not enough for the person next to me to comment on my choice of music.

All in All, at this price, it is a steal, for very comfortable over-ear headphones with very good sound quality :)

    • Thanks for the spot on review. I am quite happy with the purchase so far. For more bass have a look at my post for links on how to perform a simple mod to increase bass.

Wow, the reviews do sound good, and more bass would be welcome, so I will try this mod out when I get the chance. I have a spare pair if I mess up anyway, but fingers crossed it goes well.

        Thanks again :)

      • Wow… this mod on these headphones… no words…

It is unbelievable how good these things are with this mod, going to get another pair, just so I can do the mod again!

Spare will undergo this mod in time as well :)

        • Thrilled it worked out well. If I had a spare pair I would definitely try the mod but I've never taken apart a pair of headphones before. Did you remove the tape from all 3 holes or just from 1?

        • @fryandlaurie: I just did 2, scored out the tape and did it that way, incase I felt like was too much bass, but yeah, was all good.

Going to try to get another pair of them tomorrow… so one for home and one for the office.. thanks again for the redirection to this mod.

Thanks OP. Just picked up 2 of these. Not disappointed for the price. I didn't think the bass was too bad, maybe lacking just slightly for my taste.

OP might wanna put down that it's down from $78.

Carindale HN hadn't put the stickers on yet but they have 19 left.

Good to hear. Have a look at the bass mod link I posted in the OP. @BlackVY had some good success in increasing bass with it :)
