For those signing-up to Powershop, don't forget $75 referral credit: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/powershop_referral_links

    • +1

Where do I find my link to add me to the list?

      • Also having trouble finding this link.

        • Those links are to send a private message - just copy an existing link and replace with your ozbargain user number

  • Power shop any good than Agl??
Been with them for years they give 20 % discount

      • Thanks will look into this 😀

    • 20% is meaningless when they up their rates by 30% :-)

Powershop is probably cheaper, but its a bit more stuffing around as to get the big discount you need to log in at least once a month to pre-pay your bill (easy via ios/android app) otherwise they auto deduct from your card at a higher ratr every month. They also have spot specials which you can buy a days worth of power for 5-10% vheaper again.

But for me its saved me about $200/yr over Red Energy, so thats 4 slabs of v.good beer every year for about 60mins of work.

      • Must admit been really slack in hunting bargains in power and gas
        No idea what they charge
But doesn't dodo offers like 35 % off if you prepay
So reading other post comments there is no supply charge ?
        That would make difference
Also to remember post paying and getting discount after 3 month you are saving interest if you using cc instead of prepaying every week or month in this case

    • I got 29% from AGL after they got a notice from someone else that I was switching. The move was cancelled and now I'm enjoying what I believe is the pensioners discount.

Hi 777, I had pretty much the best rates around prior to powershop. Door knockers would look at my bills and say they couldn't beat it. We are a low power usage family of three and when I switched my bill dropped from $90 ave per month to $64.50 ave per month (accurate from powershop app - $2.15 ave per day for last 11 months). I recommend to give it a go, great being able to monitor daily usage on the app too. PM me if you want $75 referral bonus!!

  • Or here for the $75 if you don't want to use the referral. http://www.powershop.com.au/amexoffers/

But isn't it nice to use a referral so someone else benefits as well? You get the same amount either way. If you sign up you can add your name to the referral Wiki and someone else may return the favour. Good Karma! The process isn't much different - just takes a short PM and off you go.

  • Bit off topic here but does powershop provide live(hourly or daily or weekly) updates of power usage for people with a smart meter in NSW? I live in NSW with a smart meter but my account doesnt seem to update. and since its a unit complex i can read the meter in the locked MDF room either.

    • You guys should get with the times in NSW. Here in VIC I can access my data through a portal regardless of energy reseller :)

      • +2

Please dont rub salt in my wounds

    • They only publish what your wholesaler providers. I.e If you have a smart mayer it's daily, If ypur meter is read ever 3mths, then that's the update.

  • Have used booking.com for yonks, usually beat others prices and helpful should a problem occur.
(I have no association with them)

Before booking a hotel, I'd always suggest checking HotelsCombined, Trivago, Kayak, and/or SkyScanner - cross check with TripAdvisor, then google as many coupon codes as you can find.
Webjet Hotels can be surprisingly good sometimes.

      • I wonder if triple stack works

        10% off 2 night stays
        6% off Cashrewards
        and this Amex cashback

        totals 24% off if possible

        • It does. I did that triple combo

        • @MelbBargainChaser77: Did you confirm that the coupon worked and you were charged the correct amount? I just booked 2 nights and during the checkout process it accepted STAY2 as the coupon, and gave me the updated total of $416 (down from $460). Then after I hit confirm I was actually charged $460.

I sent them an email straight away, but now I'm reading some not-so-glowing reviews about their customer service and thinking it may be a while before I hear back from them.

@TghtArs: All worked well for me. Must confirm though Webjet has THE WORST customer service if you need them. But if all works well are good

Power shop has good offer but the power usage and service daily Charge is higher then dodo…

    • Powershop does not have a daily service charge.

      • +1

It does - it averages it into your unit charge which changes based on your usage. They have a page which explains exactly how your unit charge is calculated that shows this. If you're a customer you can go here - https://secure.powershop.com.au/prices to see how it works.

        • What I meant is that there is no separate fixed charge - everything is included in one unit charge (c/kWh).

        • +1

@Holysmoke: fair enough, but there is nevertheless a daily charge which you can compare with other providers, and it may be higher or lower. One thing to keep in mind though, the % discount (16% at least when pre-paid through their shop) applies to the daily charge as well.

        • @tzar: I am currently pay 36.03c/unit. which is jumped from 26.xxc/unit paid last time. Comparing this with other providers' advertised price (using same formula by PowerShop). It is starting lost competitiveness

        • @Holysmoke: there is a fixed charge which is included in their calculated rate, so that the less power you use, your rate goes up.

I've been with Powershop for the last 20 months, having churned through Origin, AGL, EnergyAustralia + others. Once you understand 1) that the fixed charge is blended into your unit rate, 2) that you get better discounts by buying power upfront, and 3) what your power usage actually is, I've found that I am better off than any other retailer I've been with (without any major change in usage). Also, once you've got used to the paying via the app, it's less hassle than remembering to pay when the bill arrives.

Think LumoEnergy offers a better rate than Powershop without all the confusion.

  • +1

Never heard of these powershop guys but it sounds like an interesting concept (and they have a nice mobile website)

    • +2

Also, electricity provided is offset to be carbon-neutral for free, and their 100% renewable rates are also very good.

  • I have also found that you get BETTER than published rates by calling some providers. My daily charge was reduced by almost 30% after a 5mins chat. I'm now on an 'exclusive' rate… available to any squeaky wheel like me LOL.

  • +2

Completed one year with Powershop and made a total savings of $385 over the year which included $150 in referral discounts. The savings are in comparison to what I would have paid if I had continued with AGL.

Powershop's "Online Saver" packs have 34% discount (for both usage and service charges), plus they also have frequent special packs (10-15 units each) of up to 37% discount. The downside is that you need to put some effort into estimating your future usage patterns and pre-purchase units accordingly.

    • I just deliberately over spend on the cheapest rates as often as possible.

    • Is there a concept of ' expire' of the pre-purchased unit in their book ?

      • Yes. Expired units are refunded during the monthly review. Unused units expire on your "review date" following the marked "expiry date"of the pack.

Thanks again OzBargain for the alert system - this Amex card I got has probably saved me nearly $100 now and I've nearly got $50 worth of velocity points too. Total cost to me, nothing - couple of hours work and it seems to keep on giving.
(Shame I didn't have it in the Woolworths / DSE gift card days, where people seemed to be getting Galaxy Note 4's for like $500 instead of $800 due to combining deals)

  • +1

With Webjet don't forget to combine this with their coupon stay2 for 10% off.

    • What coupon is this?

  • Do I just use my Amex to buy more than $70 from my powershop account after u claim the offer from the Amex app?

As in I click the link, log in, and pay using Amex? Or is there a special way of doing it?

    • Yes that is the way to do it, pretty much you have to make sure the you pay with Amex so it goes onto your statement as a transaction against powershop. You can't use paypal etc. as a paypal transaction will show instead.

    • Also it says 'spend $70 or more on that Card, in one or more transactionsble' so that you won't have to spend the whole $70 in on transaction

      • +2

Correct. Just have to spend $70 on total over the promotion period on that card. If you have multiple Amex cards, register them all and pay $70 on each card. The good thing is you can prepay, so even if it is close to the end date and you haven't spent it all, just pay the rest of the $70 and you will get $15 back. Love getting money back on "bills"!

  • +1

I spent $70 on powershop using my Amex card and got an email 'thank you for spending at powershop' from Amex straight away.

  • Hey I spent like over 200$ and never got an email straight away, what should I do?

    • From past experience, some people didn't get emails, just wait for a few days for the credit to appear.

      • I got my $15 credit on statement after 1 day.

  • missed out on the webjet coupon, does anyone know of any other coupon?
