Netflix account sharing

For some quick back story, thanks to this deal here (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/190432) I have prepaid for the next several years of Netflix. Recently my brother has graduated and moved to California. He has asked if he could use my Netflix account. I don’t have a problem with this myself. He was using it while he lived here and we were using the same TV. However, I am wondering if Netflix will have a problem if they see my account being consistently used in both Australia and the USA, possibly even at the same time. Since I have a lot of money already loaded on to my account, do not want to jeopardise anything.

Does anyone know if Netflix would take any action if I did let my brother use my account?

  • well my account gets used in australia,US,UK and god knows what other countrys. dns/vpn and an program called smartflix makes it seem like you are in another country to view there content.

    • Yeah I am aware of the VPN and DNS uses for Netflix but also know that Netflix is supposedly cracking down on that. I would have not asked otherwise. Although this is legitimate IP location.

      • They are trying and failing.

        • Don't know about that. Have been using Netflix in Aus for a number of years now. Since they announced the crackdown, Unblock US wont take my payments anymore so I switched to Getflix. Now Getflix doesn't work for me as they have blocked my IP range. Have tried everything suggested by Getflix but no luck.

      • Recently with Smartflix I'm getting errors for shows from some countries that I wanted to see. It's an error message saying they're(Smartflix) working on a solution. Shows from USA still works well.

Ahem, don't you mean that your brother (who lives with you) is currently holidaying in Cali…wink, wink???

    • He got a job over there and moved out of the family home

It's fine. The very worst that would happen is that your brother's IP gets flagged and he can't view content anymore (which wouldn't happen).

He has asked if he could use my Netflix account. I don’t have a problem with this myself.

He'd better be chipping in ;)

There is nothing wrong with multiple people using the same account for Netflix. There is nothing in their terms and conditions that says people need to be in the same house in order to share the same account. The limitation is the number of "screens" that can be used concurrently. If you have the 2 screen plan then only two people can be using the account at the same time. If a third person tried to use it, then they would not be able to.

You have nothing to worry about.

  • I can confirm my account has been used both in Australia and the USA at the same time when family was on holidays. No problems.

  • hi. We recently travelled to California and were able to use our Netflix account over there.

In December it was great as you switched over to using all the US content so the kids went nuts for all the stuff they didnt' get in AU.

I went again for work last month and I was able to login but instead I got Australian content instead (the rest of the family could still login at home in AU).

So yeah they could probably use the account for a long time without problems.

    • so you can't get American content on your Australian Netflix account, even when you're in America now? That's depressing. :(

  • I have a netflix account used by me here, and my parents overseas.
Have had this in place for 6 months with no issue - just remember to set up different profiles, else youll end up getting recommended stuff the others have watched!
