Baby monitor recommendation

Hello everyone,

I have to find a great baby monitor for friend of mine. I was seeing if anyone has recommendation.
It seems ideal would be Ibaby m6 but it is not there in Australia.

I think I want heavy duty one with all features like movement sensor, etc

It seems like motorola ones are the way to go.

I must say I'm surprised that there is no single product which stands out. Almost all of them have mixed reviews.

  • We have the AngelCare AC1100. No issues at all. The video picture is enough and the talkback feature is great. No issues with false alarms etc.

Edit: I see Angelcare now have a AC1300 looks like a nice improvement from the AC1100 in the video function.

    • Thanks. That actually looks good. Just need to find australian retailers.
There also seems to be AC1320 as well :).

      • Actually AC1320 is cheaper. It doesn't have movement pad. These angelcares are slightly expensive than what I wanted to spend. I was hoping for max $250 mark. Do you reckon its worth the extra $100? Its for close friend, so I dont mind bit extra for top of the line range.

    • Thanks I have decided on AC1300 (its $330 from ebay seller). AC1100 was around $299.

I'm a fan of recycling technology. If you have an old phone or tablet, you can try turning that into a baby monitor.

Not just that though. Whack on VLC or MX Player, and you have a baby monitor/music player. Not sure how that would work with the microphone though. I haven't tried it yet. But hey, if you're a tinkerer like me, it's worth a shot.

And then there's the Raspberry Pi's… but I'm not THAT much of a tinkerer for that.

    • Thanks I would do it for myself. However, it is a present for close friend

      • Ah. Sorry. I didn't see that. That was the first line as well. :(

Just remember, whatever brand you go with, for the love all that is good and holy, change the default passwords. In fact, change whatever defaults are on there. You don't want someone jumping onto your network and accessing your network cameras.

        • Thanks. Thats a great tip. I remember reading about people hacking into monitors quite easily.

  • We've used a D-Link DCS-932L since our daughter was born (3 years ago) and a cheap ASUS tablet with tinyCam Monitor Pro installed.

Close to flawless (rare dropouts and tablet requiring restart) and dirt-cheap if your wifi signal is good throughout the house and you have a tablet of some sort.

EDIT: If I was to buy one now, I would honestly try the Xiaomi currently on the front page https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/243073

  • We have the angel care with movement sensor.
had it about 1.5 years not. no problems

    Your eyes and ears.

The best baby monitor you could ever ask for.

    • Did you read the post? It's a gift for a friend, please don't try to be an armchair expert.

      • Friend or not, it is naïve to expect that any machine would be as vigilant as the conscience of a reasonable person.

  • We used various Angle-care monitors for our 4 children, they seem to be the benchmark. The sensors that detect breathing etc my wife loved as it gave her peace of mind, I however didn't as when it does go off it in the middle of the night it involved a mad dash to see what was wrong which was always nothing (thankfully), except a baby now awake from all of the commotion. That however is more a issue with the feature not the brand and it could be switched off, however I guess if they caused 1000+ false alarms to detect the one real case of SIDS it would make's it a feature worth getting.

    • Do you know which model? It seems AngelCare is the way to go.

  • The 1st one we purchased 8+ years ago was the equivalent to the AC201 the next one 4+years ago was the equivalent to the AC401 Deluxe plus, I don't think they had the video capable ones in their range at that time we purchased, any with the movement sensor pad would give the feature I were talking about.

  • Thanks all. I have decided on AC1300 (its $330 from ebay seller). AC1100 was around $299. Not too many reviews on AC1300 but seems like improvement on AC1100 (this is like 4-5 years old).

    Thanks heaps again.

    • Cant go wrong with Angel Care Products!

  • There are a ton of them these days that are all really pretty good. I just got one that had good reviews on Amazon (I forget the name).
