My Parcels Stolen by My Housemate

Hi guys,

Just want your opinion abour my case.

Currently I live in a student share house, managed by property management.
There are 8 tenants. I've been living here for more than 3yrs and no problem until recently.
Last month I bought a headphone from Sony online (Sony MDREX150APB), the DHL tracking showed it has been delivered on March,21th 2016.

I have been waiting if somehow someone keep it for me and will return it, but until now I haven't seen the parcel.

Then last week I order this Xperia Z3 tablet

I'm always checking the delivery status every day and again The DHL delivered it on April,18th 2016 (Monday). 'Till now, I still haven't received this parcel also. From the tracking site, Both parcels were signed by Frank (landlord), so I asked him where he put my parcels. He said he put them at kitchen table in main house as usual. I never seen those parcels in the kitchen table. Fyi, I am always away from 10am to 6pm everyday. This is the second time someone took my parcels. Unfortunately, there isn't a CCTV at common room so I can't blame anyone.

What should I do? I am thinking to report to the property manager and maybe file a police report and call Sony technical support so they can track the serial number and MAC address of the tablet and flag my unit as stolen. I know there is a slim change I will get my parcels.

IS it possible for SOny to track the location of my tablet? I know this is wiFi only..or maybe I can ask the property manager to check (the MAC address) whether the thief connect it to wifi network?

Cheers

Update :
1. Thanks to @sadako, I did network scan and found 1 Sony device..but I don't know the mac address of stolen tablet..need to check with Sony..no mac address and serial number in the invoice

Whenever I buy stuff online I request the sender to require signature on delivery. It might be helpful to you.

  • Pretty sure you can solve this with finding out the Mac address via sony

But not sure if police would consider that as enough proof unless they suddenly got tech savy.

There must be a way to either remotely connect to it being on the same network..

    • Not enough evidence. Yes, that means someone in the house has it but hasn't narrowed it down to who.

Doubt the thief would be using the device in the shared home.

  • you poor thing. Whoever is leaving the parcels on the table is the thief.

God if I caught this scumbag in the act.

Please update us on the MAC address methods and if you've narrowed it down.
So you're pretty sure the item is in your house still because of the wireless network active items?

Good luck I hope you catch this prick, then report him to police or ask for 6 months free rent or you'll tell police.

    • as mention in my update. I found a mac address connected recently to the router. It said Sony but it can it doesn't tell the model.since I know the mac address , is it possible to ring the device?

time to setup a hidden CCTV camera, and put out a tempting honeypot package to lure whoever is doing this :P

Ask frank to change password of wifi. Do so when sony device is on. Give new password to individual tennants one at a time. You will know the thief when the sony device connects.

    • This is actually a good idea

let me take a wild guess, is the landlord greek? if it is, my advice to you, start looking new place straight away, they are extremely dodgy from my experience. anyway, your landlord signed the parcel, he is partially responsible if not wholly. you mention that he live in the granny flat in the backyard and he leave the package in the kitchen with many tenants, this is not a responsible adult would normally do, he could just keep it and give to you when you come back, I mean he live in backyard not 30 minutes away for (profanity) sake, secondly, if you purchase product directly from Sony, they are most likely able to provide you with serial number of your tablet, this is because of warranty issue, so they can track the unit if the unit is faulty, I don't work for Sony but for a company with similar nature/department. thirdly, for your future purchase, ask your close roommate to sign the parcel for you if they are home, or request the landland to hold the parcel for you and give to when you are back.

what does being greek have anything to do with this? Don't be racist.

you sound like my racist nanna. We put up with her because she's a gazillion years old and filthy rich.

      What's your excuse?

  • search rubbish for parcel boxes, can't you just barge into someone's room when the tablet is in use on a false pretext ? can you access any files on the tablet through the network ?

otherwise just ask the other roomies if they picked it up "by mistake " (although i know if someone stole it why confess)

It's 2016, i'm surprised some people think nationality has anything to do with honesty

    • do you know how to access any files on the tablet through the network ?
I knew it is possible to do if I register the tablet with my account, since it is new…I think it is impossible

Yup, I agree with you..this is nothing to do with nationality or race.

  • RTS all his mails, easy

  • Poor Frank. Why is everyone blaming old Franky. He could have just been a jerk and refused to sign, instead he signs for all these gazillion packages the tenants are having delivered. He has no obligation to do this.

    • He has no obligation to do this.

      By signing, he's taking responsibility.
Then despite knowing eight tenants live there, (very likely exceeding maximum occupancy laws) he leaves the items in a common area.

Now even if he didn't nick them himself, he's being irresponsible. If he were honest, he'd park the items in his granny flat and hand them over when the tenant returns.
That's not so hard, is it?

      • What would be even easier would be to refuse to sign and let the tenants collect it from the post office.

  • OP what's the update? Any closer to finding the thief?
