$399 Dyson Hairdryer Available Soon

Dyson, a company that has released a succession of "reinvented" devices that cost a great deal more than old tech in devices for the norms, has "reinvented" the hairdryer and it will cost $399 at Sephora which has exclusive sale rights.

Quite what has been reinvented is unclear and it seems suspiciously like a device that heats up air and then blows it which you aim with a trigger type mechanism (which has been done before you know) but the announcement was made with claims of "innovation" and preventing damage to hair. The "innovation" seems to have been making a stupidly overpowered hairdryer as apparently it comes with a rubber mat to prevent it sliding across whatever surface you put it on as well as it being called "supersonic".

  • they say it'll be available in Japan first but I couldn't find when/where/how much.
    looks like a good product.

The preventing damage to hair is supposed to be because it doesn't have that grate on the top end that your hair can get stuck in, which I personally have never done & wasn't even aware it was a huge problem until they made a point of it. It is incredibly overpriced for just being a fancy hairdryer.

    399 USD = 525 AUD

It's also being advertised at 299 GBP = 572 AUD

    • A few things you have to consider

      1. US prices doesn't factor in tax/gst
      2. Australia minimum wage is almost double the US
      3. Australia has higher overheads because of this
      4. Australia market is smaller then the US, therefore less sales will be made here, will have to factor that in

There are more reasons but just remember in case it becomes like $600-700 and some people think we are getting ripped off but we are not.

  • Dyson invests a lot of money in R&D and that's reflected in the price of their products. Still bloody expensive though.

    • They also pull in over half a billion GB pounds in profit a year.

Sure they invest in R&D but they also make some truly insane profit margins on their products.

      • This is essentially the entire point of innovation. Dyson develops products that are better than what is in the market, uses patents to stop others mimicking the process, and reaps the profits.

        • I wasn't commenting on innovation, I was responding to the point @Ryanek as making about the prices of Dyson products being a reflection of their R&D investment.

Dyson prices for their bladeless fan (and by the looks of it this hair dryer) are based on brand value and design over function and they weren't an innovative technology regardless, having existed 30 years prior. What functional improvement does this offer to justify the incredible price difference from alternatives?

Bagless vacuums have some functional improvement to their innovation (however they also bank a lot on brand and design), high speed hand dryers also have some innovative functional improvement that can go towards justifying a price increase.

Bladeless fan technology? How is it "better" than what is in the market?

        • @the-mal: And I was responding to your comment on their profitability. Regardless of whether you think something is innovative or better, enough people do and are willing to pay a premium for it.

  • Significantly quieter, by the sound of things..

    Meanwhile, in Dyson News…

Thought that second one was the urinal, geez it makes a mess.

  • If you're a multi millionaire why not?

Dyson's bladeless fan are very quiet, I assume their hair dryer will be the same.

My daughter is scared of the regular hairdryer due to the noise, so if I had money to burn I'd get one.

You could even have a conversation with someone using it.

  • Ahh Dyson the Apple of air, both in and out…

There's that "Apple of [insert word here]" again!

Thanks OP, I've added this product to my list:
The Apple iPhone of [Insert Product Here]: Overpriced and Lovin' It

28/4 New Overprice: Dyson 'Supersonic' Hair Dryer
Is Dyson the new Apple? First it was overpriced vacuum cleaners. Then overpriced desk fans. In their next attempt to suck market share out of the competition, they have entered the hair dryer industry with the new 'supersonic' hair dryer. Drying your hair will no longer be boring. Now you can do it with style, and with a limited edition "chestnut-brown hand-finished leather case" so that you can show off your new purchase to, I don't know, that smelly homeless-looking guy sitting next to you on the bus. Lord knows he needs a shower and a dry! But what makes this hair dryer better than the competition? If you're asking that question, then you're asking the wrong question. The technical specs of a prestigious first-class consumer electronic is irrelevant to any decision making in this buyer demographic. Just look at the Apple market. "Detractors were silenced by Dyson devotees who compared the upmarket hair appliance to similar luxury products like Beats headphones or an Apple Watch." - Need I say more? Whether this product will blow over the competition or if it's just hot air, remains to be seen. Call me a hobo (and you know you want to), but I'll just use a towel thanks.
