  • I wonder how many people get caught out with these when they find out there is next to no warranty on the products

    • +16

I've had an issue with a Kogan import before and I returned it to their address in Melbourne. I received a replacement within a week with zero issues.

Have you actually purchased from Kogan before to assume next to no warranty?

      • +5

I bought a phone from them that would lock up even locking up during attempts to reset it. They were adamant that they wouldn't cover it as it was a software fault and refused to even look at the device. From googling it seemed to be a common fault of that phone too.

        • based on luck I guess

I've purchased the s7 edge on Kogan Ebay during the 15% OFF sale at $820 and had no problems

I've also purchased iphone 6 and 5 off kogan directly in previous years also no problems

        • +1

          @Ninjabredman:
          No problems with warranty service?

        • +1

          @Ninjabredman:
did you end up getting a G930FD? (dual SIM)
i bought the same deal and got a dual SIM instead of a single SIM

        • -3

          @PVA:

no problems with the 2 iphones at all, hence didnt need warranty sorted, but Iphone has manufacture 1year warranty regardless anyway

S7 edge still early to tell but didnt notice

        • -3

          @joshua_cia:

I havent checked sorry, only just got the phone yesterday havent opened the package yet lol

        • +3

          @Ninjabredman:
Oh,sorry, people were talking about warranty service being poor so I thought that's what you were commenting on

      • I've also had great service from them. My Note 2 wouldn't load. Messaged them and sent it to a local office for inspection, and they said they would put an order in for a new one. After my order was put through, I wondered if I could upgrade to a Note 3 instead. The stopped the order from being processed and they subtracted the original value of the Note 2 so I ended up with a Note 3 for about $90. All messages were responded to in less than a day.

      • What was the problem?

    • +1

I just had a surprisingly good warranty service from Kogan on my LG g4. Freepost to Melbourne, new phone delivered in 2 weeks

    • -2

Samsung do no cover any warranty on the devices purchased outside of Australia. Unfortunately, I bought s7 Edge gold from India and i went to them with some issues and they refused to look into it. They wont even do paid service.

My last device I will ever buy from Samsung!! Iphone only!!!

      • +1

        Apple would be the same…

        • +4

          Apple warranty is worldwide mate.

        • -1

          @trevorinski9:

          Yep, you're right…

However, the hilarious part is that if you're spending over $1k on a device then you really should have 2yrs warranty from the manufacturer, not 1 like Apple. At least Samsung offer 2yrs.

Oh, and don't recite ACL blah blah have have claiming it from Kogan!

        • @Spackbace:

Have fun claiming it from Kogan (is what I meant)

        • @trevorinski9:
Wrong, iphones and anything that has cellular don't have international warranty unless you have applecare. Sometimes they might let you get away with it if they have the correct parts though, but chances are thin.
Please don't go around spreading information that might put people in difficult situations.

Macbooks and wifi iPads have international warranty for sure.

        • @clse945111: may be you're right. i bought an iPhone 5s in Singapore once because mine got stolen during my travel and just my luck it broke when I got back to Australia and the Apple people let me claim warranty for it with a device replacement. But like you said the chances are thin and may be mine was thin enough to fit through the crack.

I don't know enough people that buys iphone overseas to support my argument. Pretty much said it because of my Mac and iPad.

Also Spackbace, Samsung is the worst people when it comes to claiming warranty. They takes their effing time and usually people don't have the time to wait for such claim. I'm lucky that because work give me an extra phone so if my S7 ever failed touch wood due to manufacturer's fault it'll have a spare but most people don't. iPhones may not be the best phones these days but Apple customer service is still top notch.

      • Try doing that with iPhone and you will get the same response.

        • +1

          are you sure?
bought an iphone from Malaysia and had it replaced at an apple store in chermside without any problem.

        • +1

I agree with har_2d, Apple warranty is worldwide.

        • @har_2d: Apple doesn't have a 2 year worldwide warranty on any of their iPhones or iPads. They have a limited 1 year only warranty with the following clause:

Apple may restrict service to the country where Apple or its authorised distributors originally sold the Apple product.

          Ref: http://www.apple.com/au/legal/statutory-warranty/

Getting a 2 year local warranty is still heaps better than getting a 1 year international warranty.

        • @Austin 316:
          thats is true.
however, i cannot find anywhere within apple's website telling me that my iphone comes from the said country. if this is true for apple genius too, perhaps you could get the 2nd year warranty. i have never tried this but it might be possible ;)

    • My 7 Edge screen decided to crack by it self… try convincing the Vodafone/Samsung waranty people that.

The Edge Screen looks nice but seems like it has the same flaw as S6

      • That's why I've sworn not to buy a Shamesang since S3. LG is cheaper and no stupid Touchwiz

Samsung thinks they are Apple charging crazy prices. screw them!

      • sucks. Hope Samsung gives you a replacement.

Mine got a dead pixel 7 days after I bought it directly from Samsung. Got a new replacement on the same day I took it to them. No dramas.

  • +7

International model and may differ slightly from local models

Dick Smith, your new go-to location for grey imports so you don't have to pay Australian tax.
Wonder whether Kogan gave much thought to what the goodwill of the Dick Smith name was based on.

    • +5

Only suckers will be going to kogan dick

      • +6

They should re-brand the site, DickedbyKogan.com

  • +9

No information about bands/model number. Says it's an international model and may differ from Australian models. No standard manufacturer warranty.

Looks like it's basically the same as just buying it from Kogan?

    • +2

Service is same, but the price is cheaper than Kogan site. Now it is $999 on Kogan site.

  • If the sales on dicksmith are charged by kogan then maybe the AMEX $30 back from $150 would work (unless they setup as separate business/bank details). If only could use multiple AMEX cards on it.

    • +2

update - purchases come up as Dick Smith Online. No email from Amex, therefore seems not applicable for Kogan cashback offer.

  • +1

Anyone know if this is the Exynos or snapdragon model?

    • +2

      The s7 I got from Kogan was a sm-g930fd
      Exynos

    • +1

is one better than the other?

      • The Exynos chip typically has better performance and battery life compared to the Snapdragon chip, due to it's octa-core compared to the quad-core in the latter.

      • In benchmarks, the Snapdragon has better GPU performance while Exynos has better CPU performance.

However, real-world testing from a lot of sites and youtube channels found Samsung seems to have optimised for the Exynos far more so it's notably quicker around the interface and has significantly better battery life. Also seems to run a bit cooler with intensive work like using Gear VR.

Basically, Exynos is the preferred in everything except some synthetic benchmarks.

        • But Snapdragon has the custom rom futureproofing right?

        • @Bunnyburger: Well AOSP ROMs are probably going to be more abundant and more reliable (judging from how Exynos 7420 S6 do not work well with CM even at current stage). It's likely that this year's nexus would be based on Snapdragon 820 as well (I think the leaks suggested HTC this year based on their 10? Of course, this is just a rumour).

Slightly tangent, I always found AOSP ROMs to be bit finnicky (at least from what I've seen with CM on LG and Samsung phone). Camera doesn't work well, few bugs here and there. Just saying.

        • @Oversimplified: Yeah you're right on that count. I put CM on my S3 and the camera crashes occasionally and I think my photo quality went down. Phone became faster though…

        • +1

@Bunnyburger: I personally think you'd not see that much performance increase from CM with the current TW and current hardware. They did cull down a lot of bloat and to be honest, I don't even feel like rooting is necessary with my current S6 (which is saying a lot since all the other devices I had were all rooted). I am not saying that there isn't a room for improvement, I simply think the improvements that you'd see from rooting and flashing a custom ROM is minor.

        • @Oversimplified: Totally agree. My s6 edge marshmallow is so smooth even when compare to custom ROM. As the adblock is integrated to browser, I don't see any reason to root and install custom ROM.

        • @bongtrang: Marshmallow hasn't come to unlocked Australian S6Edges yet, for Telstra I've read it has but not the unlocked ones =(

        • @Bunnyburger: You can flash the India or Singapore firmware to taste Marshmallow. It doesn't trip knox. I have been using India firmware for more than 1 month and don't have any problem with network.

        • @bongtrang: Which browser is AdBlock integrated in?

        • @sridhar: stock browser. Sorry, there is incorrect information. The correct info should be install adblock fast or adblock for Samsung browser, then you will have a browser with adblock on a non-rooted phone .

        • @bongtrang: Samsung stock browser on Lollipop should have this function too.

        • @sridhar: The Samsung one now supports adblocking plugin feature (Adblock Fast is the one I am using).
You don't need the marshmallow to use it, you simply need Samsung internet 4.0.

        • +1

@bongtrang: :P Kinda am looking forward to Marshmallow to fix few minor irks I have (They failed to fix memory problems that Google created and made it worse with their implementations in lollipop if you ask me). Kind of hoping for Samsung Pay to become available soon as well. AMEX apparently alluded that Samsung Pay will be available in Australia soon, with Marshmallow being the major update… Well a man can dream.

        • +1

@bongtrang: The Vodafone guy told us if my friend flashed the 925i firmware (officially released by Samsung) I'd be rooting my phone. Hilarious…

        • @Oversimplified: I heard Telstra release the update on 13 May

        • @Bunnyburger: Can understand if he is reviewer or custom
          support

        • +1

@bongtrang: I've heard similar thing with Vodafone as well (which I am currently on), hope it's worth the wait. Waiting for Samsung Pay more to be honest (I've seen a lot of promotions in Korea and US with Samsung Pay, I want some of those in Australia).

        • @Oversimplified: I'm with ANZ and the ANZ mobile pay app can do very similar to Samsung pay. Basically, I store my credit card account on my phone. When I need to pay, just Tap and Pay with my phone. This is what I understand but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

        • +1

Same with NAB app. Tap & Pay works fine.

        • +2

@bongtrang: I am mainly looking forward Samsung Pay for promotions that they'd bring with it (Like 50% off coupon for Gear S2 etc). I do see some values, i.e. MST which would allow using the phone for those older machines without NFC, that said, mainly speaking, promotions are the ones that excite me more.

        • @sridhar: I don't really like the NAB App, it crashes all the time in the background for some random reason for me. It's annoying since I use NAB as my main bank. Westpac App or Commonwealth bank app I think are better.

        • @Oversimplified: Yeah, 50% off coupon for Gear S2 sounds great if they have that promotion in Australia. I would be happy if my phone can use MST (I don't know how) to replicate the transportation card such as Myki. That is just my dream.

        • @Oversimplified: Strange. No such issues here.

Try clearing the app's cache from within Application Manager.

        • @bongtrang: I don't know, probably not. I don't think the government will contact Samsung to do such thing nor the other way around (plus, I am getting the feeling that MST wouldn't be something that many of us will be able to tamper with to begin with, judging how Samsung Pay relies on KNOX).

        • @sridhar: I wiped my phone completely recently after a mess up with the package disabler, the problem is still there. I kinda gave up on it.

        • @Oversimplified: oh well, don't know what else to suggest you then. Try posting in Whirlpool.

NAB tap and pay works fine on both my S7 Edge and Nexus 6P. (It promptly stopped working after rooting my Nexus 6P.. I knew before getting into that though).

        • @sridhar: I assume it might be an issue with S6? I dunno. It's an horrible app and I am going to leave it at there. Only reason I am keeping it is because I do use NFC payments on it, so I hope to God that either NAB fixes the app or more likely, Samsung Pay comes to Australia with NAB being one of its partner. Funny thing is, with fingerprint scanner allowing me to log on fast on webpages, I think I'd rather use the Internet browser (kinda reminds me of the old days when I had my old Windows Phone, those were the days).

I assume that the app is the problem, from the fact that it doesn't work with Nexus 6P and Xperia phones. I was going to bring up the reviews on Play Store page, but I think that page is for bashing the app developers and giving 1 star without really giving them any feedback whatsoever.

        • @sridhar:

Plenty of browsers do on Android now. Even opera mini has adblock now. RS browser is nice fast browser with built in adblock.

        • @Ronnnie: Adblock Plus (Samsung Browser) is working fine in the stock Samsung browser. That is what am using now.

        • @bongtrang: and now you don't have to, XSA MM version is out :P

One thing that I am slightly happy about is that Samsung Pay app is available now, though it does say service's not available in Australia yet.
I feel slightly eh because I didn't get to play with the changed UI much (Curses to the themes and Nove Launcher).
Slightly curious, is it easy to move from country to country on S6? I did change countries with my old phone, but I am slightly worried about S6 TW, since I did hear that S6 makes it harder for people to even downgrade.

        • @Oversimplified: Yes, I switched to Australia last night. Indeed, the process is easy and smooth. I don't even lost my data. If you don't know, there is an app name Display Scaling bring a hidden feature of Sam TW. More detail here: http://www.xda-developers.com/there-is-native-dpi-scaling-hi… Note that you don't have to install Nova, just need install the app I mentioned. IMHO, this and the smooth scrolling on S6 MM are the best features.

        • @bongtrang: :) Already tried changing DPI for a bit (I already have nova so I used that to enter .DisplayScalingActivity.

Kinda rolling with Good Lock. I dislike the quick setting design that AOSP has, I think it wastes too much space, other than that, it's alright.

  • -2

FYI it says device is network locked. Would this work with Telstra 4G?

    • +2

The banner at the top of the overview says network unlocked

      • +9

lmao. I thought it said locked. facepalm

  • +1

Isn't Kogan registered in Australia if so shouldn't we be able to claim the Galaxy Gear deal as well (available to Australian online purchases)?

    • +1

Terms for the promotion are pretty specific and list the participating products as "Samsung GS7 SM-930F (Australian Variant)" and "Samsung GS7 Edge SM-935F (Australian Variant)".

    • What galaxy gear deal

    • +5

      Not for a grey import

    • +3

      No free VR

      d) "Participating Product" means either of the following products and excludes “C Grade” or “seconds” products:

      i. Samsung GS7 SM-930F (Australian variant); or

      ii. Samsung GS7 Edge SM-935F (Australian variant);

      Taken from https://www.samsung.com.au/promotions/gear-vr-offer/conditio…

  • Sent from overseas?

    • +1

      grey import = overseas

  • Are we able to claim TRS if bought from Dicksmith? Thanks

    • It is not being very clear, but if you check the terms and conditions it says that the buyer "may be liable for import tax". That means it is a grey import from overseas on which no GST is being paid. So "no", 99% chance that you cannot claim GST through the TRS.

And BTW, I think Kogan is not being very clear about this, and many customers who do not check the media (or Ozbargain) as much as us will be caught out, thinking they are buying Australian stock from an Australian store.

      • +1

        This obviously is their intention…

      • +2

Thanks. When you enter into the cart, it shows 'TOTAL inc GST where applicable', so I thought there could be a possibility.

    • Invoice which has, 'tax invoice' written on it, with ABN number, name of the retailer, purchase price of the goods, including the GST paid, description of the goods, date the purchase was made.

  • +10

Not worth it. No Gear VR. No local warranty.

  • +1

Still, even without the gear VR, it's $1249 vs $819. Mobileciti has the AUS S7 Edge for $1168, buy you can still save quite a bit buy buying this one from Kogan. The only thing I don't like is that Kogan don't list the LTE bands or the CPU version - this is obviously deceptive on their part. They'll just ship you whichever model they find cheapest on the day of your order.

    • +5

Just wait till an eBay sale, likely there's one around the corner before EOFY.

Really not worth the hassle of a grey import for this sort of spend!

      $250 I can understand, $800+ hell no!

      • +2

Can not fathom how someone can drop near on $1000 and NOT want warranty on it.

        • +1

Simple mathematics. Say the Kogan one is $800 and Samsung is $1200 and for the sake of argument say Kogan's 1 year free warranty doesn't work at all. You're saying there is a more than 50% chance the phone will break within 2 years to the point where it is completely irreparable for the warranty to work out mathematically. If the cost of the repair is less than $400 you can also pay for your phone to be repaired at a third party and still come out on top vs. buying directly with manufacturer's warranty.

      • $250 I can understand, $800+ hell no!

Mate, you finally say something useful.

        • +1

Hey now cmon, I say a lot of crap, but I say a lot of good shit :P

  • -4

Cheaper on EGlobalDigitalCameas - $763 & think they're not a grey model because support band 28

    • +4

If it's eGlobal, it's grey import. Aint nothing local about that store.

    • +1

$763 is s7 on Eglobal. Edge is $893

      • Mybad…Missed the all important 'Edge' part.

Re grey models - The main deterrent is obviously the available bands but in the case of eGlobal their phones have the impotant Band 28 (700hz) range that a lot of other grey models do not.

  • +1

Would be good for a price match as some retailers may not know it is a grey import

    • office works is the only one who price matches right?

      • OW refuses to do price-match with DS now.
