    $5 less than a Moto X :-)

    • +5

Ah well… I would have gotten the Moto X Style if it is still available, but alas, I was too slow.

  • +1

I have this phone from the last deal.

    Pros:
    - Dual Sim
    - Waterproof
    - Decent camera
    - 4G support
    - Real good price for all of the above

    Cons:
    - Network keeps dropping out – Major issue
    - Battery drains quickly and won’t last for more than 15 hrs
    - Wifi consumes way too much of battery
    - Only has mono speaker, I know the older ones had stereo speaker.

    • +3

are u updated to android 6 marshmallow yet? it should help with your battery drain issue. otherwise it means some app in the background is sapping your juice.

I'm on optus and no issues with network dropout, 4G runs smooth and quick too.

I do find the screen backlight a bit on the bright side. Great for outdoors but indoors i have to turn it all the way down. Of course with the bright screen, battery life suffers. But with a 2.4amp charger it only takes an hour or so to get fully charged.

This is probably one of the best 2G RAM phones you can get on the market now. Hoping motorola will come out with an improved 4th Gen. with 3GB or more RAM soon.

      • I'm updated to latest android 6. Upon researching, I found many of the Moto owners were facing similar issues.

        I'm using Telstra and Optus

        • I'm not having any such battery or network issues on mine which I've had since December. Battery can last me 2 days with light use sometimes too! Although I do have it rooted with battery optimisations such as Amplify and unnecessary system apps disabled… Maybe some just have lemons.

        • You know you can get a battery use audit from Settings > Battery? I got Marshmallow and battery life is very good for me, can last up to 1.5 days. No problems with dropouts either.

    • Could you confirm for sure that both sim cards are able to use 4G/3G at the same time, and one isn't relegated to 2G? My boss is after one to replace his two older phones and just wants to carry one phone at a time (both using Optus sims). Although you saying there's major issues with the network dropping out will probably be a deal breaker..

      • +2

With one sim on 4G the other SIM will only be 2G. There are currently no released phones that have dual 4G or 4G and 3G at the same time.

        • +1

          Xiaomi Mi5.

        • @StrayfireX:

This is the exception, although doesn't have band 28 not too sure if that is a problem with optus though.

        • Damn, I read a few things that I swear said it was 4G for one and 3G for the other, obviously I was reading it wrong. I was surprised as it didn't seem there were any phones like that (as you said). Ah well, the search continues.

        • @StrayfireX: I had seen that, but wasn't sure in Australia where to get it from, as they will claim it on the business. Plus, if there's any issues with it would prefer a phone that could be easily swapped over (without having to post overseas).

        • +1

          @Porthos:

You'd have to get it imported from a site like banggood. I doubt you'll be able to claim it against your business.

Not having Band 28 sucks. Bad for indoor and metro/rural LTE. I wouldn't buy one, but it exists and if LTE doesn't matter for you, might be an option.

Snapdragon 820 finally supports dual 3G SIM natively so this year's phones are likely worth waiting for, if not next year's to wait for the tech trickle.

That's why my boss wanted local stock so he would be able to claim it.

He only uses it for calls and messages, barely uses the net on it at all apart from email. He just wants to only have to carry one phone, not the two like he does now.

I'll keep an eye out, surprised there aren't a heap of phones being released now considering the 2G network closes down in less than a year, but I guess Australia is such a small market and the dual sim market of that is even less.

          Cheers for the help.

        • @Porthos:

Typically developing nations are where dual SIM phones are popular. Typically you'll need to get a grey import to get them.

They won't turn off 2G anytime soon in developing nations, so there isn't much of an incentive to make 3G dual SIM phones.

Markets like Australia or the US, they assume everyone wants a single SIM.

After the 2G shutdown, it'll still be possible to select what SIM you want your phone to use.

So if your boss doesn't want work intruding into life or vice versa then it would be alright.

Vodafone hasn't said anything about a 2G network shutdown yet, so maybe have him to switch to Voda?

With any luck the Moto G 4th gen coming out soon will be dual 3G or 4G.

          Makes perfect sense there!

It's more he wants to be contactable when it suits him, and just the convenience of not having to carry 2 phones around all the time, even though he does turn off his work phone on weekends. This is his own business, and he works some weird hours at times so always generally carries his phones with him, but they're both older phones and he wants to just reduce it to one, and doesn't see the point spending money on a dual sim phone if it'll basically be redundant in less than a year.

With any luck the Moto G 4th gen coming out soon will be dual 3G or 4G.

Both his phones and his wife's phone (my other boss) are all with Optus on contract, neither of them are really wanting to leave Optus due to the price they pay (and knowing my luck, porting their numbers across will end up somehow screwing up and he'll be without a mobile to contact people on, then I'll never hear the end of it haha).

I might just get him to wait with the 4th gen and see if it does have the duel 3/4G. Cheers!

    • Thanks for your review. I have the 2nd Gen and am after an upgrade due to the 2nd SIM only having 2G support. The 2nd gen pretty much has the same cons as yours and i did tell myself i would never get another motorola. Works great as a single SIM phone but the second SIM is useless anywhere other then outside.

    • My Mrs got one @ the 20% off Good Guys eBay sale, and loves it to death. She can't fault it, and with Marshmallow treating SD card like internal memory, she doesn't have to stuff about moving apps to SD to fit them on. Brilliant!

  • +2

Good deal, however new MOTO G 4th will be released next week.

  • +12

Better off spending a little bit more and getting something like the 5X. Moto G's are bargains when they're around the $200 mark.

    • +2

I'm waiting for the Good Guys to do a firesale on the Moto G 2015. :)

    • +2

Agreed! You can get the 5X for around the 300 mark (16gb version, grey import). Faster and more capable phone IMO.

    • Don't really like buying grey imports IMO

This is the way to go for me

  • +3

Officeworks now changed price to match GG… bugger

    • Cheers :)

  • Is it possible to put a very basic prepaid SIM card in this to receive calls and with second SIM card to deal with all the data?

I can get 5 data sims on Optus plan and they can share the 10gb. But if in the country; Telstra is better for service.

    Thanks!

    • Yes, I do that.

    • Pretty sure that's how it works (I have the original gen 1 version, you can set one sim to do calls and the other to do data.

  • Well off topic but what the hell, can anyone recommend a decent Telstra Pre-Paid plan? Aldi? Low usage.

    • +1

Aldi PAYG is my go to option.

365 day expiry, 12c per min call or text.

  • I have this phone. I came from HTC one x.

It was a great upgrade. Battery and performance are both great. Much cheaper than the flagship phones!!

  • Dont think this phone is worth $300, let alone $280-ish. Medicore battery life is not impressive either. This and Xiaomi are probably the most hyped and overrated budget phones on the market.

    • +1

What do you recommend kind sir?

      • -1

Iphone 5c for $279? haha at least it has better update.

But seriously Xiaomi Mi 4 is just around $200 with snapdragon 801. but without local warranty.

The newly announced Xiaomi Mi Max looks good, s652 with 4850mAh battery for CNY $1,500 ($313 AUD). I will consider it if it cover all the network in Australia personally.

        • With Xiaomi, you don't get no Google Play store out of a box and you need to flash a rom to make any Xiaomi phones useful. MIUI is pretty, but is also heavy and slow.

I don't bother to go through all joys of hassling with a phone to solve software issues. So, no. I don't want Xiaomi unless they actually ditch their stupid UI and install the stock Android instead.

        • A lot of people like MIUI, in fact some of them even think its one of the best launcher. You can ask one of those Asian phone accessory store to flash the rom for you if you are not confident.

But if you really want stock android experience, Nexus 5x $359 is a good choice with s808 and one of the best camera.
          https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/lg-google-nexus-5x-16gb-white/?…
Edited: looks like Kogan is doing 10% off, code:TAKEOFF10.

          Other option:
          Oppo R5 $259 : s615 with 1080p screen
          https://www.mobileciti.com.au/oppo-r5-r8106-4g-lte-quad-core…

          Sony Xperia M4 Aqua $295: s615 with 720p
          https://www.mobileciti.com.au/sony-xperia-m4-black

Honestly, Iphone 5c is not a bad choice either if you are ok with 4" display. A6 chip is only slightly weaker than s410 in Moto G 3rd but Ios is very smooth system that you wont see the difference in real life. Screen solution is about the same too.

      • Refurbished HTC M7, Samsung Galaxy S4 and Sony Xperia Z1(or even Z2 if you are lucky). All of them are under AU$200 either on Ebay or on Aliexpress and they are still fantastic phones.

You want a new phone? Galaxy J5(2015) which is around $200~230. It matches specs of Moto G 3rd Gen and the battery life is great.

    • Dont think this phone is worth $300, let alone $280-ish.

      My answer is NO!

  • I use telstra but with the dual sim I could have Optus data sim.
Would this work out with vieweing Optus foxtel with EPL or is too early. I know the off season is just around the corner.

  • Order from OW is better because they offer next day delivery via courier.

  • I have this phone as my back up - I've got the even cheaper 8GB model (yep it's literally my back up, just put sim in and go, it's also got a microSD slot so not really an issue anyway).

It's the phone I take with me for sports activities (hiking, kayaking, paddle boarding, cycling, etc). It's a relatively cheap phone and is waterproof. No way in hell would I take my precious LG G4 when doing those activities! Only downside is the mediocre camera (at least when compared to the stunning camera on the G4!).

  • Just a little caveat; the dual SIM functionality will be redundant on both Telstra and Optus within a year. Telstra plans to shut down 2G from Dec 2016, Optus from Apr 2017.

Of the 2 SIMs in the device, the one nominated to be the "second" SIM can only access 2G networks.

  • +1

    Cheaper at mobileciti.

    • How much? Does office work match the price?

      • $289.99
        https://www.mobileciti.com.au/motorola-moto-g-3rd-gen-xt1550…

Yes, Officeworks price matches Mobileciti. There are some staff members in-store that say they don't price match but they are wrong. Best way to do the price beat is to call their 1300 number and arrange to pick up in store.

        • Cheers. Got it price matched over the phone no problems. $275. Used Coles CC for price protection so if it comes down any cheaper I can grab the price difference

  • +1

Moto G was popular as a budget phone at $200 a few years ago. The same cannot be said in 2016; specially for $300!

    • Agreed.

Even though not as recent when it comes to OS version, I got a Z2 from Optus for $400 on the eBay deal…which would still run rings around something like this.

Or the same $400 can also get a Nexus 5X….

This would be a good phone for $200, not so much for $300.

  • I own the Moto G 2nd gen and to be honest it's a bit of a dog now. I've just replaced it with a Moto X Style @ $299 :-) and I'm not looking back to say the least! Just bought my wife the new Oppo F1 and I gotta say that this is easily the best value dual sim phone in Australia right now under $300. I'm actually a little jealous ;)
