  • Samsung EVO 32GB were $8.99 AUD at Shopping Square last week

  • Anyone know how these fare as far as throttling under a sustained load? The fanless part worries me a bit, especially with a 4200u.

    • I worried about that too, found and bought the higher model with the i5-5200u 14nm CPU for US$230 del (AU$320), should run cooler than the 22nm Haswell CPUs. The newer model also has dual HDMI.

It's Aliexpress but the store is Hystou, you can also buy from Hystou direct for ~AU$370 delivered.

  • Fanless with a 4200U?

The thought of that makes me uneasy.

these were 50c at Bunnings a few weeks ago on clearance

      • I'm not sure exactly what 'sealed' means but the dimensions are a tad under 200mm, so if the top grill is open it would be perfect for mounting a low profile and quiet 200mm fan.

  • It was 189 with free postage at Gearbest and a bit of googling you can find reviewer links that bring the price down to 183 US nice try though, my just touched down in aus so monday I get it.

  • Any deals on a unit with 2 Ethernet ports?

    • +2

Can I ask why will you need 2?

      or buy a switch?

      • Generally, two interfaces for two subnets or link-aggregation.
Former can be achieved with single interface, but the NIC and switch need to support VLANs and also share bandwidth.
Edit: just thought of third use - dedicated interface for a VM.

        • As a VPN, DMZ, gateway, content filter, pfsense many more applications with dual nic.

        • @dreamzz:
These are just uses of "two interfaces for two subnets".
Although, firewall in Transparent Mode isn't.

        • @dreamzz:

Correct :) for an inline Sophos firewall for home.
You can get a free home use license, they also offer 10 free AV licenses for home use now too.

The Sophos firewall is pretty slick stuff and fully functional, just something to keep the kids safe at home, as it will be inline and initiating my connection there will be no way to bypass it "well almost"

I am after a cheap intel machine with 2 nics too,

      • I have found a Chinese distributor for these, maybe if i can get enough interest i will do a group buy?
Certainly works out a lot cheaper buying direct.

    • The Hystou Gen 5 fanless i5 has two NIC and is only US$50 more.

    • with 2 Ethernet ports

The unit has four USB3.0 ports, perhaps consider using a USB3 gigabit ethernet adapter?

      • +1

Wont work for an inline firewall, too much delay, and they generally will not provide the direct access required for the purpose.

I have one of these but with i3 processor I ordered direct from Hystou three years ago. Mine comes with 4GB RAM, 64GB SSD and Windows 7 Ultimate pre-installed and activated and costs me close to $400. I have since upgraded to Windows 10 pro (which I regretted). It's actually very well made. The only issue I have had is that there's occasionally no audio, but a restart always fixes it. I use it mainly as a media playing/streaming machine. Yes, it does gets hot in summer. However, the heat never caused the machine to stop working if you let it stand in upright position. All in all, I'm very happy with it.

    • With the no audio issue, is that over HDMI or 3.5mm?

      • Over HDMI. the pc is connected to Onkyo receiver via HDMI

  • Oh so this is nuc knock off?
Didn't know before.. Maybe good to get. Nuc is s bit expensive still

    • True. The fanless PC is a much cheaper alternative to NUC. Hystou has a huge stock of fanless PCs with different processors and configurations. I think DHL or EMS costs around US$25 if you import from Hystou.

Note I'm not affiliated with Hystou.

      • Looking at that site I think it's this one and it looks like it is cheaper to buy direct from Hystou for US$219.40 (DHL Shipping) vs buy from Dealexpress for US$229.09 (Flat Rate Shipping).

          Thanks for the Hystou link.
But this deal is DealsMachine and I get a price there of USD185.99 including shipping,
like it says in the deal.

  • is this 4th gen processor??

    • Yes.

my vaio laptop has this cpu, along with a 128GB ssd and it's very snappy. if you're doing the usual web browsing and media playing then the cpu is more than powerful enough to handle those tasks without making you wait.

    this seems quite reasonable

    http://www.hystou.com/products/fanless-computers/fmp03-i3-50…

at 237 USD (roughly $320 AUD) seems a decent HTPC setup. they don't seem to gouge on the RAM or SSD as the barebones system is roughly $227 ie $93 gets you RAM + SSD + Windows

they say - if no remark on the order we will install active Windows7 or Windows8 directly.

not sure how "legit" the copy of windows would be, but you should be able to upgrade to windows 10.

i like being able to add another drive into the box as well. must resist

    http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Cloud-Computer-Terminal-Serve…

    AliExpress : AUD $264.32
    DealsMachine : AUD $264.73

    • Not bad.
It lets you choose many configurations of drive and ram.
      Also windows installed it seems.

    • Thanks. I also found this cheaper one on AliExpress, also with i3 5005U $126.36USD for barebone.
Pretty sure that none of these that come with Windows would be legit!
