Join a bank. Easiest way to check out new environments. (Source:my wife was a nurse for 6 years and found her best job by temping there first)

Gives the management a chance to try you out and you to see if the place is good to work for.

I've been a Nurse for thirteen years and got almost all my jobs by doing agency or pool shifts then asking the manager for casual or part time then getting a full time contract if we fit.
