  • I'm really interested in the G9X for $430. It's not as good but its significantly more compact which is an important feature for me.

This is a real bargain especially since the TZ80 takes 4K video, it also has a Leica lens.

I have the previous TZ70 (2015 model) and it is an awesome camera.
The TZ60 (2014 model) looks like it would be $255.20 after discount code which is a pretty good deal too.

Here is a sample pic I took of the Moon with my TZ70 a couple of weeks ago its a little blurry and was taken just holding the camera without a tripod but shows you how good the zoom is.
This was taken with around 120x zoom. They have 30x optical but when you choose the digital zoom option it goes to 120x

Wow seems like an awesome point + shoot, nice deal.

  • how would this compare to a APS-C like Sony A6000? or even the Olympus OM-D?

I owned the original TZ1 a decade ago (damaged by volcanic ash in Vanuatu after several years), replaced it with with TZ20 (stolen during house burglary) and now own the TZ30. These are a great range of cameras and they have not delivered a dud yet. On that basis, I'd recommend the TZ80.

You could argue an SLR has other advantages but if you're unlikely to lug around a large camera, you won't take any photos anyway. The discrete size also allows for more candid shots - people engaging in daily activities don't seem to freak out and freeze like they do around an SLR.

    • i brought my nikon d3200 (with 55-200mm kit lens) and tz60 with me to shoot pics of the antonov an-225 that invaded perth in the last few days. in daylight, the ultrazoom of the TZ60 got me a decent close-up shot that was sharp enough at such long range.

at night, and even though i was closer to the plane, the tz60's pics had too much noise while the d3200 gave a much cleaner result. i didn't use a tripod with either of them.

the d3200 was heavy but not to the point of being unbearable. it was more ergonomic even for my small hands, felt more stable and secure. the compact nature of the tz60 meant i didn't have much grip. and i found out the tiny viewfinder wasn't really that practical.

i should also mention that the tz60 did get dropped from about 1 foot off an armco barrier post after a gust of wind blew it off (lens fully extended). aside from a few scratches, it went about its business like nothing happened :)

Although im sure TZ70 is as good of a camera it doesnt have the 30x zoom.

    • @BargainHunter1901 The TZ60,TZ70 and TZ80 all have 30x optical zoom

  • how does this compare to the phone cameras. i mean is something like a samsung s7 close enough or am i way off?

i've also been wanting to get the sony mkIII but it's considerably pricier. other than true resolution and video recording (according to that compare website) is there any other reason why i should spend atleast 300$ more?

(sorry im not sure, would love some help)

    • this camera isn't much bulkier than a smart phone and gives you much better picture quality, actual optical zoom (not just digital) and a more effective flash.

sure, it's another device to carry but the only real downside is that you can't upload your pics to social media as easily as on a smart phone. if that's any sort of downside at all

  • I have the TZ7 and TZ30. Great all round camera. Not so good in low light, as mentioned by others above. The irritating issue I had with both models was the incidence of dust appearing behind the lens. Not so noticeable when the screen is filled with colour, but more so on single colour shots (example - if half the shot is sky) and more noticeable on zoom shots. I had to carry a set of precision screwdrivers around on tour to open the rear and clean. There are many videos on youtube showing how to do this. Its a problem that seems to affect the Panasonic camera mainly in this class compared to other brands.

  • I wanted the TZ110, It's $719 after the discount from Bing Lee. The cheapest I found was $718 from an online store here which sells Hong Kong imports.

Good Guys doesn't stock it, and no Bing Lee stores in SA. :(
