[Almost Certainly a Price Error] Nikon 70-200mm F/2.8g ED VR II AF-S Nikkor Zoom Lens " $499 AFTER CASHBACK" Was 3499

So this evening I was looking at OZPriceTracker and my eye nearly popped out of my head when I saw the top deal by percentage price drop.

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens -$3,000 -85.74% $499.00

I was ready to instabuy click through to the JB Hi Fi where it says YOU PAY $3499 $499 AFTER CASHBACK*
That's slightly less awesome but still pretty awesome.

But then I saw that the cash back amount is $300. The difference between $3499 and $499 is more than $300. It took me slightly longer than I care to admit that if one adds an extra zero to 300 it becomes 3000. So this is almost certainly a pricing error. The thing is, if a pricing error is directly programmed into a store retail price there is a chance it will be honoured but the worse case is the order is cancelled and you get a full refund.

With this offer you have to pay the full retail $3499 upfront and the cashback is provided by the manufacturer. There seems to be no chance for it to be honoured, since it was the retailer's mistake not the manufacturer's. Yet I can certainly see people being mislead by this and by the time they realise they will only get a tenth of the cashback promised, they have used the product and would be unable to return for a refund.

it's a cash back amount error.

    the price is $3499.

cash back is $300 not $3000.

so final price after cashback is $3199.

That is a very pretty price chart, but how well is a lens going to work after falling off a cliff like that?
